We loved it!! The tenants couldn't be nicer. The view from the house is amazing. The bedrooms are nice and clean. The place to stay if you want to visit the Duro Valley.

- Free Parking
For a tiny village (which doesn't even appear on some maps!) situated on the EN 222, mid-way between Peso da Regua and Pinhão on the south bank of the river Douro, Folgosa is a special place as it shares 2 top class establishments in the famous Portuguese celebrity chef Rui Paula's DOC Restaurant (see separate review) and the perhaps not so famous but nonetheless praiseworthy Damião Paiva's "Agro Turismo" residential farmhouse, QUINTA DA AZENHA.
The route up from the main road to the Quinta is something of a challenge in a large car, but it is fortunately well sign-posted and well worth the effort. There is ample parking at the side of the main building and it is only a 10 minute walk down to the river.
Sr Damião greets his guests warmly despite his lack of English and a decanter of his delectable Port wine is proffered on arrival - and most other times when he sees you!
The rooms are not big - and nor are the beds (standard Portuguese double beds are a miserly 1,80 m long by 1,40m wide) but everything is beautifully presented and pristine.
Breakfast is served in the large kitchen and all guests sit together at a refectory table (we are early risers so unwittingly missed out on sharing banter with fellow guests over coffee, rolls, delicious home-made preserves and cakes.
Evening meals can be provided by special arrangement but as we ate out at Rui Paula's DOC on each of the 3 nights which we spent in Folgosa I cannot comment other than to say that the smell of cooking emanating from the kitchen was mouth-watering!
There is free Wi-Fi internet access for those who need it.
All in all, this is a fabulous place to spend a few days and to absorbe the quality of life in the Douro valley.
A well maintened century xv stone house with a Douro vista! Damião, the owner, welcomes visitors with a home made port toast and a warmful smile; at breakfest we also had opportunity to taste home made jelly and sausage, a variety a cheeses, cakes, fruits etc. Besides the luxuriant scenary at your own window, there are plenty of quintas around to visit and the Ruy Paula´s restaurant by the river is something! (Tough expensive, it is worth every cent). The house is very charming and clean. A very special home like feeling
