We left our hotel at 10:00 for our trip & enjoyed the scenery along the way.
Our driver had to turn off the a/c for a bit in his old van to make it up the hill.
When we got to the place another couple was there & just going on the garden tour.
Even before our guide came, birds were flitting by us. It was amazing to see the lovely Doctorbird so close.

We sat down, got our bottles than the guide started calling the birds. It wasn't long until one came plus there was a variety of birds on the feeders. The guide took pictures with my camera which was fine for this part of the experience but I would have liked to take my own pictures on the walk. On the other hand on our walk he went out of his way to find & photograph a Jamaican Tody for me. The scenery was lovely & he explained some trees, termite nests & flowers.

We really enjoyed the experience & didn't find $20 too much to pay for it.
I'm so glad we were able to do it.

Unbelievable to have a wild Streamertail Humming Bird (Dr Bird) sitting on your finger drinking from an miniature bottle of sugar water held in your other hand. Simply amazing. A "must do!"

Set secretly in the heart of Montego Bay. There is nothing like a feather weight, gorgeous wild Humming bird sitting on your finger and feeding from a bottle. These birds are stunning and it was amusing to see the most masculine of men feeling delight when a humming bird chose to feed from them. A must for all bird lovers and soon to be bird lovers. Jamaica has spectacular wildlife.

That's the question you need to ask yourself.

For $20 entrance fee each, what you get is very limited. A small bottle of sugared water and a plastic chair to sit on. Under normal circumstances, nobody in their right mind would cough up that much. But these are not normal circumstances.

Within a few minutes, Humminbirds are landing on your finger to drink the sweet nectar. Weighing only a couple of grams you would not know they were there if you closed your eyes. It is, without doubt a unique experience.

Rocklands is up in the hills outside Montego Bay, about a 15 minute ride from the town. The owner greets you on arrival and gives out an old miniature shorts bottle each, filled with the magic potion. He is welcoming enough but that's about as far as his hospitality goes, no offer of a soft drink and little advice on the birds, which are numerous.

After ones arm is going numb with holding up the bottle and finger for the Humminbirds, the offer of a tour around the garden is forthcoming but after a dozen paces, we stop and that's it!

The price is non negotiable and he says the price set by the owner has gone up but he IS the owner!

After 1hour, he says it is time to close, the time is 4.10pm but the opening hours are advertised as from 2.00 until 5.00.

For the uniquness of having Hummingbirds feeding so close to you I would give this 5 stars every time and i don't know of anywhere else this happens but everything else was a little disappointing.

We went with our three boys, 8, 5 and 18 months. The 'sanctuary' is a private house whose owner has cultivated a comfortable habitat for the local Mango hummingbirds, finches, sparrows and Doctor Birds. Don't expect to see a wide variety of hummingbirds here, since the focus is on birds that are indigenous to Jamaica. That said, it's fascinating to see them all flitting about the property!

We sat on the patio for half an hour or so and fed the Doctor Birds and the Hummingbirds from bottles of nectar. The guide/staff were very encouraging and patient with our two young boys, who really wanted to feed the birds but weren't great at staying still or holding their arms out. It look a number of tries and lots of encouragement, but each boy got to feed the birds and it was a highlight of our trip. We walked around the property a bit and saw more birds in their natural habitat, which was great. We would have stayed longer, but the littlest boy was all done and too noisy to stay.

The 'sanctuary' is up a very rutted road in the mountains. The community that you drive through on the way is very typical of how the majority of rural Jamaicans live, and if you're in Jamaica for a cruise or all-inclusive trip, it's good to get out of your comfort bubble and see something of the actual country as well as see the wonderful Doctor birds.
