Askernish Golf Club

Owner description: Askernish Golf Course is set on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The course was lost for over 70 years before Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine accidentally stumbled across it on a fishing trip. It was discovered that this course dated back to 1891 and it was 'old' Tom Morris who designed it. In 2008 the course was re-opened in almost exactly the same set up as it was 117 years ago. At 6,259 yards the course can often be taken for granted, this should be done at your own risk as the last 12 holes has some of the best links golf holes around. If you get a chance, come along and play the course on a Sunday afternoon where you will be invited to play in the weekly competition between the local members. It will be a round and golfing experience never to be forgotten.

Golf as it was played before 1900. Natural fairways with longer grass festooned by daisies and buttercups. Contrast of holes 1-6 easy, 7-12 very tough, 13-18 mixed. Lovely views of the ocean, beach and Barra.

By titling this review "golf in the raw" is no disrespect to Askernish but a true appaisal of how golf used to be played. The original "Old Tom Morris" design has been followed as much as possible, the tees are placed in a natural position to give a view of each hole and a commitment of a true straight shot, but not necessarily long. The greens are also in such a position to naturally receive a good approach. The bunkers are few but naturally placed. All in all it is a wonderful golf course with beautiful views, not manicured like other famous courses but a true test of golf. I first played this course in 2008 then 2009 and 2013. I am looking forward to making the reaquantance again in 2014 at the Askernish open weekend and the hospitality afforded by the members and Mary Flora.

I played Askernish twice,in 2008 after it opened and in 2009 when myself and 3 colleagues did the 72 hole in a day Macmillan cancer challenge over 4 courses on the Western Isles including Askernish.

Everyone at this club and indeed the other clubs were extremely helpful and accommodating to our request (the other courses being Barra,Harris and Stornoway) and indeed we were given a momento ball marker from Askernish, which was a nice gesture.

As for the course it is simply a beautiful, magnificent and majestic golf course which rolls through some of the biggest sand dunes you are likely to see anywhere. There are numerous great golf holes but 7 (one if the best driving holes anywhere),8 (beautiful short par 4), 11 (par 3 over a big valley),12 (par 5 with split fairway),14 ( par 3 much like postage stamp but infinitely more beautiful backdrop) and 15 ( par 4 with green set 40 ft above the fairway and with massive 2 tiers) are particular highlights. In fact 7 and 14 would in my best 18 holes I've played. Honestly 7 is unbelievable, play it if you can.

I have played Ballybunion in Ireland and Askernish is very similar in style (7th is very like 11th at Ballybunion) and other holes are similar.

The condition of the course is in keeping with the traditions of he game and are an insight into how golf was before it became so polished as now.Its probably the most authentic golfing experience you could have that would be similar to how Tom Morris and the early golf greats played the game.

All of the persons involved in this project should be very proud of what they have achieved.Old Tom would be very proud. If you are in Scotland play this course, you will love it.

I love playing at Askernish, I have played 3 times this year but I can't help but feel that the £35 a round is geared more towards tourists than locals. If I was closer then I would obviously become a member and I wouldn't have this problem, I know if it was a mainland course it would probably be twice the price at least...maybe something to take in to account to attract more local people to play this great course.

Returned last week to participate in the 3 Day Askernish Open Golf Competition. This is my fourth consecutive year and the course just gets better and better. This years entry was 140+ from many different countries. Good thing the new teaching facility next to the clubhouse was finished because there was no other place to put people. The Stapleford event on the Friday was won by a local lad and the Open on Saturday by an American, resplendent in his 'plus fours' (nice to spread it around). Of great interest was the fact the John Garrity of Sports Illustrated was there to prepare for his final article in the series on Askernish he began several years ago. He had not been to the course since 2010 and he was extremely effusive in his praise for the what he saw. He agreed with many who said that if you can score at Askernish, you can certainly score at any links course in the UK. Now the stewarts of Askernish have a nice problem on their hands as this event is now at capacity. Where to next.....?
