“The best golf course!”

Askernish Golf Club

Attraction details
Owner description: Askernish Golf Course is set on the Isle of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The course was lost for over 70 years before Master Greenkeeper Gordon Irvine accidentally stumbled across it on a fishing trip. It was discovered that this course dated back to 1891 and it was 'old' Tom Morris who designed it. In 2008 the course was re-opened in almost exactly the same set up as it was 117 years ago. At 6,259 yards the course can often be taken for granted, this should be done at your own risk as the last 12 holes has some of the best links golf holes around. If you get a chance, come along and play the course on a Sunday afternoon where you will be invited to play in the weekly competition between the local members. It will be a round and golfing experience never to be forgotten.

“The best golf course!”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

Beautiful views of the ocean, challenging and enjoyable course with the dunes and rough. Very reasonable rates. Beware the sand flies. The club house makes the best scones I have ever tasted. A wonderful experience - needs more souvenirs as a reminder of such a special place

Thank you for your kind comments.

I have passed on your comments to Mary Flora, who makes the scones and she is delighted you liked them so much. You can 'come back anytime' she says.

We are working on the souvenirs and the whole set up of the 'shop' and will be a winter project to upgrade, modernise and stock more fully. Hopefully, on your return we will be able to sell you whatever you wish.

Many thanks

“Not for first time golfers”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

This is a links course, which is nothing like the manufactured courses you get inland. I played golf for the first time and it was hard work. Reasonably priced for a well-renowned course. Golf clubs can be hired.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding Askernish GC.

We are privileged that you chose Askernish for your maiden round and well done for completing it. We have a brilliant group of coaches who spend their time getting new golfers used to golf and its challenges on the first 6 holes before venturing out into the dunes. So, for a beginner to complete all 18 holes is a great accomplishment.

We hope you can return and enjoy the course again in the future.

Many thanks

“How to enjoy the day-ticket: evening scramble”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

Myself and 3 friends came to the Outer Hebrides from the University of St Andrews, to stay at our friends house on Benbecula. Playing at the Home of Golf we are very spoilt regarding links golf, but could not have enjoyed our trip down to Askernish more.

We drove from Benbecula to Askernish for a noon tee-time, and purchased the 'day ticket' for £35. We had a thoroughly enjoyable first round, delighting in the views over the white sand beaches and glorious turquoise sea, and were especially impressed with holes 6 and in.

After a tiring round - missing the fairway is punished with a trudge through the rough, and the hilly course with walks between tees and greens takes a little toll, we drove through to Polochar Inn for a delicious pub dinner.

Looking to make the most of our day ticket, suitably refreshed from the pub, we returned to play a Texas Scramble in the evening. This was brilliant fun. Loose drives into the rough no longer mattered as much, and the course could be enjoyed as it was meant to be played- from the fairways enjoying the challenging approach shots, and making birdies. We were -8 after the first 8 holes, and as the light faded managed to finish 15 under, finishing just after 10pm with a stunning sunset and red skies accompanying the back 9.

The rabbit holes add character, offering a real insight into what 'bunkers' were like in the early days, and the tee shot on 7, the approach to 8, along with all the par 3's, were fantastic.

Couldn't recommend getting off the beaten track to play this gem more, (which would cost £200 and be in the same bracket as St Andrews, Kingsbarns, Royal Dornoch if it were more accessible), and challenge anyone to beat our 4 ball texas scramble score of 15 under.

Thank you for your great comments and appreciation of the course. 15 under par 57 is an awesome score, if you send me your scorecard we will have it put up in the clubhouse, contact me on scott.hamilton@storasuibhist.com to arrange this. We have a Texas Scramble on the 25th August so will be interesting to see if anyone can get close.

Thanks again for your post and its great you had such a good time.

Many thanks

“An experience not be missed”
Reviewed July 27, 2013 via mobile

My wife and really enjoyed playing this course. It is not an easy course and the undulations on the greens have to be seen to be believed but that's what makes it fun. It is a classic course that any keen golfer would enjoy playing. The clubhouse is small but very friendly. All in all an excellent experience.

“Pure Golf”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

hard to beat Askernish Golf Club, a great layout, great setting, golfing pedigree with the history of Old Tom morris , one of the originators of the modern game. This is so pure, I played it when the cattle were on the course, yes the tees aren't easily apparent but i liked that fact, it was unspoilt by furniture, bins and signs telling me to speed up, and where to go, to be honest you could tee it up anywhere and there would be a great golf hole in front of you, the macahir land is so suited to links golf, check out thye website and learn about this, it is a unique place and is a GEM.Well worth a trip. It reminded me that the ultimate sophistication is simplicity. Golfing heaven
