We were here, on a friend's birthday, for Sunday lunch. Service was friendly, but poor, with mistakes including knives and forks for dessert and opening a half bottle of (the wrong) dessert wine without removing the foil first - then pouring out full wine glass measures!

The vegetarian food, though, is why I'm writing. We had two 'choices' - one on the main menu and one on the set menu. Both were pasta (pappardelle) with a thick cream and cheese sauce. One had butternut squash, the other mushroom and spinach. So really the same dish, tweaked. Over 24 hours later I still feel like I swallowed a bowling ball - just awful. A big lump of stodge for well over a tenner - and no veg with it! The last time we experienced anything like this was fifteen years ago - it's what old hotels used to give veggies because they didn't know any better!

Both mum and i went for the beer battered haddock, hand cut chips and salad. Duly arrived, the fish was excellent, but the chips had a weird flavour, and on complaint we were given another fresh bowl of chips.....also with the same rank flavour!! Can only assume that the oil hadn't been changed for a millenium !! After another complaint, we were asked if we would like a free dessert and we both chose the apple and berry crumble with thick vanilla custard...the thick custard had the consistancy of milk, and the crumble? Well....had better at school !!! And they won pub food of the year???

Popped in here last Sunday for roast dinner on our way to Holt. Didnt realise until we got the menu that it was a "Flying Kiwi" pub. Having "experienced" a stay at The Ship and eaten at The Crown we decided to take a chance on the Roast Pork. Starter of crayfish tail and prawns was overpriced for what it was a handful of prepared leaves, a tablespoon of fish plus a couple of teaspoons of marie rose sauce was £6.95. The roast was plentiful, well cooked and the only reason there was food left on my plate was I could not eat any more. Unfortunately we waited for someone to ask if we wanted coffee and no one came so my husband went to order some - and was completely ignored by the two staff behind the bar, then another customer approached the bar and was immediately served, he eventually placed the order and came back to the table - where we were still waiting for plates to be cleared. When someone came to take the plates I asked if the manager was available and it was he that brought the coffee. When told about what had happened he did apologise and said he would speak to the staff, we then told him about our poor experience at the Ship - see our review for April this year - and he informed us that he had been employed by the Flying Kiwi to go around sorting out problems like this and that was why he was now at The Kings Head as he had sorted out The Ship's problems - he obviously has his work cut out as when my husband went to pay the bill he was again ignored by staff.

What a disappointment. The chicken and bacon baguette had a smear of filling (I think it was nice, but I couldn't really tell), and the sausage baguette had two sausages and some nice but sparing onion marmalade. These cost almost £8 each (which they try to bulk out by serving with a handful of kettle chips and some dressed leaves), but trust me, you'll get a much nicer one at Roughton New Inn for half the price. As it happened, I was glad I didn't order anything else off the menu: the 'main course' served to my son (pork belly on mashed potato, three teeny carrots, and a drizzle of the 'cider sauce') was so small it would have been a starter anywhere else, and cost nearly £18. We all went home hungry, and finished up our homemade apple and blackberry crumble (instead of paying £8 for a white chocolate cheesecake). The portions are too small (even for a 'Gastro Pub') and clearly overpriced to suit London wallets, but I hope they can also see it for what it is - an overpriced insult. Avoid, avoid, avoid, until they make some serious changes to their portion sizes.

We went to the Kings Head for a pre-booked Sunday lunch during the summer holidays to celebrate an anniversary. There were four of us including a small child.
It was very busy as you would expect but that's no excuse for the hopelessly slow service we received. We waited 30 minutes for a wine list after asking 3x, and did not get any drinks at all until our main course arrived. This incompetence is losing money for the owner - we would have ordered a bottle of wine but ended up only ordering 2 glasses because we had lost interest by the time the wine list finally arrived.
The food took absolutely ages to arrive and other people were complaining around us. No-one seemed to be in charge of the waiting staff, who were all rushing about but not seeming to visit the tables on their way past.
The food was OK - nothing special to be honest. The chips were horrid - far too big and so not cooked properly in the middle. The starters were good though - the duck egg is fantastic and the houmous lovely - although the breadsticks were straight out of a packet and not a very nice one at that.
We did not have a sweet or coffee - by that time we had sat there long enough.
It's a shame - the Kings Head has a great setting, lovely styling and a super garden with plenty of play equipment to keep children quiet. But the whole thing was let down by the poor service on this occasion. We won't be going back.
Oh, and they need to put some of those automatic air fresheners in the toilets. When I went at the end of the meal, the place was very smelly with flies buzzing around and bits of toilet paper all over the floor. Not in keeping with the Vogue covers wallpaper. Someone should be checking the state of the toilets at busy times.
