“Far too low in many ways”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

First some practical information: Driving time from Hotel Latrabjarg to bird cliffs is 45 minutes on gravel road, from the hotel to Raudisandur 1 hour on gravel road.

We stayed in one of the double comfort rooms (room no. 16) with private WC and shower at the price of 200 Euro per night. It faces the fjord, Patreksjfördur can be seen on the other side . The room was small and only basically and cheaply furnished with not enough space for just everything. The furniture looked old and dated. The view is nice, but the room’s 2 armchairs cannot be used for any comfortable sitting together, one of us always had to sit on the bed, as the second airmchair is placed near the door and cannot be moved. The bathroom was also dated and old-fashioned (and so not all all to be compared to the bathroom shown on the hotel`s homepage!) with a window opening to the hotel’s totally messy back side. Lots of rubbish and working stuff lying around there. Due to what time does to places where water flows, the bathroom needs renovation....It was just impossible to have a hot shower –the water went cold after latest 3 minutes EVERY time, no matter what time of day or night.
The overall service was unprofessional and annoying. Every time towels were changed (so every day except the first, see below), at least one of the towels was not clean enough and therefore not useable. Daily room cleaning service is only done if you leave the room key at the reception which we were definitely not told on arrival. We asked in the evening after the return from our day trip why our room had not been made and were then told that we need to leave the key at reception to obtain room service, no excuses from the owner’s side. They offer a 3-course menu in the evening (when I said “at night” I was corrected that it is not at night, but in the evening, so be correct if you do not want to be shown that you as a guest are SO wrong), no alternative, no small snacks, nothing. There is a bar, but no bar menu indicating choices and/or prices. And there is nothing to do in the evenings. We had our own food with us as we knew about it, so just be prepared. Although the room is equipped with an electric kettle, neither tea bags nor coffee is provided.

Yes, the location is somehow remote, but not more remote than many other hotels in Iceland. It is, by the way, not more than a 40 minutes-drive from Patreksfjördur –is that remote? How ever it might be, the location can for sure not justify the low standard rooms and bad service at such high price, breakfast not included, by the way.

We can definitely not recommend to stay here. Maybe to stay in Patreksfjördur is the better choice, you have to drive the distance to the bird cliffs anyway, if you are coming for that reason.

Finally, one practical tip: beware of extremely aggressive and quickly attacking arctic terns during breeding season if you walk down to the nearby beach or even down the street, especially in the evenings, but also during daytime. Take a large stick with you and hold it high up over your head, as birds preferentially attack the highest point. Good luck!

i'm afraid i really can´t recommend this place. yes the owner is nice, but the rooms are smelly and cheap and the place is HUGELY overpriced, even for a way out area in iceland with little competition. we were charged 140 euro for the room, and then a whopping 43 euro pp set menu of tomato soup, a bit of fish and some (admittedly tasty) pudding - we felt there´s absolutely nowhere else to eat so they charge you through the nose for the food. and then breakfast was 24 euro extra! sure, the views are nice, but hard not to be in the western fjords.

to top it all the whole point of us going there - to see the birdcliffs - was a huge disappointment too. our guidebook had spoken of huge cliffs with thousands of birds - we saw about two dozen puffins and a smattering of gulls. i don´t know if we were just there at a time when the birds were elsewhere or whether the birds have moved on due to climate change etc or whether they've just been massively oversold, but if you´re coming here for them then do make sure you have done your research and that you have a good chance of seeing what you want. (the cliffwalk is pleasant so it is still a nice place to go, but it´s a pretty big detour just for that).

if you are intent on coming i would either stay somewhere further away, or there was a place on the beach nearer the birds that had very basic dorm rooms but which i suspect is much better value, has a lovely all day cafe area and is bang on a completely beautiful beach.

OK, we are a little spoiled, and we don't like sharing bathrooms. But everything is very clean and welcoming and the bed was fabulously comfortable. The views are spectacular and the owners warmly welcoming without being at all clingy.

The food. That is what this is all about! We had a number of dinners in Reykjavik, all expensive, all professional, but we had to wait to come to Hotel Latrabjarg to experience truly fresh, subtle, delicious Icelandic cod and, the second night, lamb. Don't miss the great food at this unique hotel.

If you are planning to start your day in latrabiarg cliff there is no better place to sleep the night before but this hotel. The nearest hotel with same facilities is almost an hour away so you would waste 2 hours of the day if you don't sleep there. The dinner was very good and tasty although there is almost no choice. The breakfast was not perfect but was ok.

Not expensive when you consider how remote the hotel is. The roads are gravel and care is needed. Also the time to travel from place to place is twice as long as you might think. We stopped and took a lot of pics along the way. Best advice is not to rush and go slow and enjoy the uniqueness of the area. Thank you Ben

My impression of this hotel is that it's poorly named. The Latrabjarg cliffs, where the bird colonies are, sit some 25-kms from the hotel, and then a hike of a another 2-3 km. And, at 175 Euro per night for a double room, must rate as one of the most expensive, and most poorly serviced counrty hotel in Iceland, the rooms at Hotel Latrabjarg being simply furnished and offer only basic facilities. Probably the charges play on the general lack of alternative accomodation in the area and the attraction of the bird colonies in the region. The Hotel Breidavik, just 5-kms from the bird cliffs, manages very comfortable accomodation from around 100 Euro...The choice is yours.

Room Tip: If you are a bird-watcher look elsewhere. We were the only guests at the hotel while we were there...

The reason we stayed at this hotel was its location to the cliffs. As noted by other travelers, the roads in the Westfjords are tough, and we were looking for proximity to the cliffs on our last night in the Westfjords. The owner of our previous B&B thought staying in Patreksfjordur would be best, we didn't want to backtrack that far. I agree that the price was high for quality of the rooms compared to other places we stayed in Iceland, but you are paying for the location. The views are gorgeous (I don't know if there are any bad views in Iceland, however), the location is quiet, and the accomodations worked for what we wanted - a drive to the cliffs, back for a good nights sleep and a departure in the morning for the ferry. We weren't there long, but the exchanges we had with the owner (?) were pleasant and he was extremely helpful. We did not have dinner here, but the breakfast was not our favorite. The rooms were dorm like, but we had a private bath and everything was extremely clean and comfortable. The price and ok breakfast is why I am giving this an "Average". You'd have to get back to me re: whether I'd stay again! If time was limited as this time around, yes. If we could've hit the cliffs in the morning and kept driving to our next destination, probalby not. I would've liked more time to explore the beach and the area, however. Did feel I needed a couple of hours to complete my feel of the area.
