Review of Avicennia Island - CLOSED

Avicennia Island

Attraction details
Owner description: We specialise in guided kayaking excursions for small groups through the pristine mangrove forests of Funzi Bay in the south coast of Kenya. The low capacity of vistors is intentional to ensure personalised attention from our expert guides, and low environmental footprint. Our excursions also include a visit to the stunning beaches of the Funzi Sandbar, and a cultural tour of the fishing village on Funzi Island. Our seafood bar-b-cue lunch is served at the charming wooden cottage on Avicennia Island, nestled between the beach and rainforest. On request we organise inshore sport fishing safaris and birdwatching (and crocodile) tours to the Ramisi River. On weekends, we host overnight camping groups, where all local attractions are included, i.e. fishing, kayaking, river, village tour and sandbar.

“a perfect little vacation”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

Completely agree with the other reviews. This was probably the coolest thing I've done in Kenya so far. The trip was incredibly well organized, from airport pickup to dropoff, the food was delicious (lots of fish and coconut!), and the beaches spreading out from under the mangroves were really beyond compare.
There was never a dull moment on this trip--kayaking through mangroves, swimming with dolphins, snorkeling in Kisite marine park, wandering through fields of sea grass off the sand bar... Even during the unscheduled parts we had plenty to do. The bay is calm and perfect for swimming or kayaking, and the island is open for exploring. Shakil is very flexible, and was happy to tailor the activities for us. As a biologist, he knows a ton about birds, fish, and especially coral, so expect to get the most out of the wildlife in the area.
Finally, although there were lots of opportunities to get a workout in, don't worry if you're not in great kayaking shape. The dhow was always there to pick up people when they got tired!

“3 days in Paradise”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

We have just spent 3 wonderful days on Avicennia island with Shakil and his team as part of a holiday in Kenya. We were so well looked after from start to finish. The food was delicious and they coped well with 4 vegetarians in our party. We all had a comfortable, individual tent from which we could see the ocean. We enjoyed the relaxed pace of the stay which included several kayaking outings, a lovely river trip during which we saw several species of kingfisher, herons and other birds and also a couple of crocodiles and we also visited a sandbar during the day and under a full moon and discovered starfish and the fascinating sand dollar. This is a very unique experience in the important mangroves of the area. We would love to return and recommend it to others. Cripps and Romney family

“staying on the sand, underneath the stars”
Reviewed June 24, 2012

I had a lovely time with Shakil, William, and the gracious team at Avicennia Island. This is a one-of-a-kind excursion in Kenya, which is outdoorsy but super-relaxing. At one point, we saw sunset on one side of the kayak and the full moon on the other. No dolphins this time around and bring your bug spray, but visitors can expect to see a beautiful beach, catch fresh fish, and see kingfishers and other birds. The menu doesn't change too much, but the food is very good and fresh. This is the perfect place for a short, active, and reasonably priced coastal getaway from Nairobi or points elsewhere.

“Exceptionnal place!”
Reviewed April 12, 2012

Not a resort, not a lodge, not just a campsite... something very special hidden in the mangroves, in a beautiful spot. Kayaking with dolphins was the highlight of the week-end. Excellent food and group dynamic (we went as a group of 4 friends joining a wider group of 14 total). Will surely come back and do highly recommend it! Thomas

“Active relaxing with fantastic food involved”
Reviewed April 10, 2012

I spent the Easter weekend at Funzi and felt completely relaxed and energized. The organizers are very kind, fun and spontaneous. We went bird watching, swimming at full moon, watched dolphins, worked our upper bodies while kayaking against the current and it all was fun! Thanks for a fantastic time.
