“Never lets us down”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

We've visited The Windmill before and it has yet to disappoint. We had friends visiting last weekend and wanted to treat them to a yummy meal by the fire, true English style. We had The roast beef with all the trimmings and we're pleased with speed of service. We weren't rushed even though it was very busy. I do wonder why other reviewers complain about it being busy as in our mind it adds atmosphere. I would book ahead if you want a table though as being a popular spot turning up on the day you might not get a table.

Being regulars the staff have come to know us and greet us like old buddies, the GM is fab and makes us laugh every time. Seriously try this place!!!

“Popular place, ok food, atmosphere iffy”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

I have visited The Windmill a number of times over the past year and have always found that there is a good, varied menu and that the food is cooked and presented well. For such a popular place (car-park sometimes difficult to find a space in) it somehow lacks atmosphere though. But I have always found the service good, unlike some of the other reviewers.

“Good meal for Four”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

This is a very busy pub on a Sunday, even with snow on the ground the place was packed. The service was very good when entering the pub but was a bit slow during the meal and the 2nd bottle of wine took its time coming, but tasted good when we got it. We all had different meals and all enjoyed them, we found it a bit noisy as it was very busy and clearly people were enjoying themselves. The staff left you alone, too alone sometimes but I think this was down to it being so busy. Definately book if your thinking of going!

“Wouldn't return.”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

A group of us visited the windmill last night for a girls night out. When we sat down we noticed how chilly it was in there and sat with cardigans and scarves on throughout the evening. We ordered our starters which then took around 15-20 minutes to turn up. They were bland and tasteless. We then waited a further 20 minutes for the main that eventually turned up cold. The heavily overpriced £17 lamb was chewy and fatty, along with cold asparagus and thick congealed gravy. We told the waitress and she offered us dessert on the house... Unfortunately they'd run out of Brûlée so we ordered the Crumble with vanilla custard. Yet again, this turned up cold with a plain custard, not even a hint of vanilla. We left the remains and asked for the bill which was 175 pounds. We reluctantly paid and to nobody's surprise, didn't leave a tip. I think it's safe to say we won't be returning any time soon. The new chef needs to get his act together or leave. Such a waste of what could be, a lovely restaurant.

“Always enjoyable”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

We have been visiting The Windmill for several years now as a family with my husband and mum. We all have different tastes and find that the menu always caters to our needs. The chef who did mostly fish specialities (had an Irish name but I cannot remember - ?) was amazing, so I do hope this is not the one who has left...
High level of service from all staff members and a great atmosphere. I last ate there in November and had two starters as a main course: scallops and soft shell crab - both were first class and cooked to perfection.
