The building has mix Lanna and Swiss style. They use teak and inside the villa you can feel how the Queen Mother life. This is the place for her in last 10 year. Her compassion to build the surrounding area can be felt. You can see how passion she is on reading, craft and astronomy. And the explanation was very well so you can get connected in to her. The surrounding garden also very nice, they even have Sakura.

The garden is on the hill side and is either up or down. Beautiful and refreshing though. A small cafe is in the midst of it all. One of is was in a wheelchair and it was hard work indeed. Pushing or holding back.

We continued to the Royal Villa where the Princess Mother resided in her later years. Just because I live in Thailand, and my wife is Thai, and appreciate the history of H.M. the King, his mother and the royal family, it was an emotional tour for all of us. The audio tape recorder with headset was an excellent way of introducing the villa.

Be aware that you must purchase the ticket some 200 meters away rather than at the entrance that leads up to the house. Weird really.

For those who love gardens, this is the place to visit in Northern Thailand with flowers from around the world. The Royal Villa with audio tour is also quite interesting to visit as well as to learn about the King's Mother - known as the Princess Mother. You have to like touring historical homes and learning about history. You definitely see why both the mother of the King (a commoner who married into a royal family) and the King are so well loved and respected. This place offers a great historical lesson and was interesting even for my 8 year old daughter. My 6 year old, however, stayed outside with our tour guide. The Royal Villa is still being used at times by the Royal family today so it is well maintained and the audio tour was fascinating. This place should definitely be at the top of the list for those who love history, Royal villas, and immaculate gardens.

Doi Tung is more than one thing or place. It is located in the mountains of Northern Thailand, easily accessible by car. Formerly, this was an opium producing area until it became a flourishing center helping many of the local hill tribe communities. There are several attractions located within easy walking distance of one another. There are the royal gardens where one can take a book and just enjoy reading or stroll through, taking in the beauty. The Hall of Inspiration is nearby and definitely worth the time it takes to learn more about the remarkable royal family and their contributions to the people of Thailand.
There is also the Royal Villa. It is a little walk from the other sites, but well worth the effort. No shorts or short skirts are permitted, but cover-ups are provided for those who forget. The villa is beautiful with an outstanding view overlooking the forests below. One can not help but be impressed by the rather spartan personal living quarters of the Queen Mother. They are anything but elaborate, but suited her needs and were what she wanted. The Queen Mother was a remarkable lady, endowed with common sense and a sense of responsibility not matched by many others.
There is a restaurant and a cafeteria, gift shops and a nursery should you be interested in the many plants of the area. Just slightly down the hill from the main center is a local village market. Ladies line the street with fruits and vegetables sure to be new to many. Feel free to wander through the many stalls to see handicrafts and other items of interest.
Weekends tend to be crowed, so midweek is ideal and parking entails less of a walk. There is something for everyone at Doi Tung. Allow yourselves time to take it all in. You might enjoy travelling farther afield as well. There are other interesting places to see and visit in the general area and, if you have the time and like to explore, this is the place for you.
