Cabanas Torio
Reviewed September 27, 2012

We first went to this little haven in March, during the dry season. We didn't stay at the hotel, but we did experience the restaurant/bar, and had a tour of the property. Robbie and Heidi, the proprietors, have a nifty little place here! Robbie has taken the time to landscape the area using mostly local tropical plants, and is now working on planting coconut trees! He's created a little oasis for the local Muscovy ducks, geese, turtles, and other critters, and sees to it that they are all well fed and happy! It's fun watching them interact. It's also fun people-watching here! There are lots of local "regulars" who obviously feel right at home here...and that a great sign of a friendly, welcoming establishment. When in unfamiliar territory, go where the locals go!

This little resort is on the western Azuero peninsula of Panama in the fishing village of Torio. It’s an easy 2 bus trip ($13 total) from Panama City to get there. The bus stop is across the road from the resort. The large grounds are beautifully landscaped with a small pond that has fish, shrimp, ducks, geese and turtles. There are an amazing number of tropical trees and plants.

There are 8 small cabanas and a larger house for bigger groups. The cabanas are comfortable and clean with everything you need. They have bathrooms, hot showers, ceiling fans, and A/C. All for $28 per night.

The thatched roof restaurant is gorgeous and just steps away from the cabanas. Johanna, the cook, does a good job preparing breakfast and dinner. The menu includes several delicious choices including a 2 lobster tail plate for less than $10. Also on the menu are locally caught fish, chicken or shrimp tacos and good cheese burgers. There is a full bar with ice cold .75 cent beers. It’s a fun place to just hang out and meet the other tourists who come from all over the world. Several colorful locals and ex pats also spend a good deal of time at the restaurant.

The resort is just a few minute walk from a great swimming / surfing beach on the Pacific Ocean. A fresh water river runs into the ocean here too. This is a great place to catch fish right from the beach. You can take a nice beach walk (with two waterfalls along the way) to the next spectacular beach of Malena. There are several other beaches in the area with surf waves from small to scary. Some beaches have bars and food and all have interesting people to meet.

The owners; Robbie and Heidi are great and will help you in just about any way they can. Heidi was born in the area and knows (or is related to) everyone. Robbie is from the US but has lived in the area for over 7 years. If your Spanish is not too good you will get by just fine.

This area is just now starting to get on the traveling publics radar but is worth a visit now. There are just enough people to keep things lively and interesting but not too many to be crowed. The cost to vacation here is low and has everything I want in a beach location.

This is the new beach vacation spot you have been looking for.

Room Tip: All the cabanas are about the same
