West Wood Yurts
Reviewed September 7, 2013

My son bought this trip for my husband and myself as my birthday present as he'd been there with his girlfriend and they loved it. It's in a delightful, secluded location and the yurts are very well-equipped. Great for children - there were two in the next yurt to us and they were having a wonderful time. It's very safe as no cars can get near! The beds are comfortable and the toilet and shower block was always really clean. Lovely walks on the Gibside estate and not too far from the seaside - we had wonderful weather and loved walking along the beaches at Whitley Bay, which is under 20 miles away. It's really near to Newcastle and Gateshead but feels miles from anywhere - - in a good way!

Room Tip: The yurts are in a little wood with the toilet/shower/washing up block in the middle. None of the y...

Our second visit to Westwood Yurts as we enjoyed our stay so much the first time. Location is fantastic with access to tyhe NT Gibside Estate. The children have a great time and the venue is peaceful and relaxing. Lots to do and see within easy driving distance. Great value for money.

These yurts are wonderful, warm, comfortable and pure excitement for kids, they loved going into the park to play on the tree ropes, then onto Strawberry Castle for a bit more of kids heaven, by Ten.pm they were all asleep exhausted with so much fresh air ! and the little stove was keeping the yurt cozy and warm, not a computer in sight just old fashioned play.

What an amazing 2 days we had, the Yurts have all one needs and more provided plus lots of things we did not expect like a cafetierre.
Toilets, showers and washing up area were spotless, again everything was provided , toilet rolls, fairy liquid etc, etc.
The large cool box took everything and freezer packs delivered each morning.
It must be an amazing place for a large family to go to celebrate a family occasion and take all the yurts, Grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, kids etc, affordable whereas a hotel stay would prove too expensive.
As a family we all loved it and the kids are already asking can they go back !

We stayed for two nights on 31st July we had wanted a weekend stay as the idea of beer garden at Gibside seemed appealing but as we left it a bit late there was no weekend availability left for holidays. We had a great time our 6 person yurt was huge and overlooked a field of sheep and cows we had our own private deck and seating area and we were not overlooked by other yurt s so there is a sense of your own little piece of countryside to yourself. We had a friendly welcome and all aspects explained as it was warm we did not use log burner but imagine this would lovely for chillier breaks .
Three boys had great time in Gibside and riding the luggage cart downhill on site. A box of outdoor toys are available and tracker backpacks to do family scramble in Gibside.
Holidays like this make you all reconnect away from internet, games consoles and TV's it's a must in this day and age to get back to basics (with a bit of luxury!)
Go you will love it!!!
We will be back.

These yurts are absolutely magical! They're set in a really pretty little woodland in Gibside National Trust estate. The site is very peaceful and quiet. The toilets and showers are immaculately clean, and there is a neat little kitchen area for washing up.
The yurts themselves are beautiful. We stayed in a small one, and it was plenty big enough for me and three children. The beds are futons, which are very easy to pull out and really comfortable to sleep on. There's a little storage area for food, and all pots, pans and crockery are provided. There's a gas stove and a BBQ outside, just for your yurt, as well as a picnic table and a fire pit- logs were even provided. The girls, aged 8,5 and 3 had the best time- evening campfires, toasting marshmallows, night time adventure walks hunting bats- you even have access to Gibside after it has shut, so we played on the low ropes course and had it all to ourselves.
Would not hesitate to recommend, and will definitely be going back

Thanks for the review. Pleased to hear you thought the yurts were well equipped, we aim to make it so our guests can travel as lightly as possible to make the yurt camping experience more relaxing! And happy you seem to have made the most of the access into Gibside - the low ropes is a great choice for after hours fun! See you again soon!

We stayed in a large yurt on July 22nd for 2 nights. First impressions were very good, we were met by a lovely young lady who showed us to our yurt and explained everything to us. Plenty of safe space for my children 6,4 and 2 to play independently. The showers and toilets were very clean however as the days went by the got grubby and by the wed morning they were rather dirty (toilets) there was a problem with the ice pack delivery on the tues and no one received any, we found out the following day they had been a problem with the freezer, luckily we didn't have a great deal in the cool box, which might I add is huge and the things we did stayed cool enough anyway although I had added my own packs in on arrival. The yurts are very warm without lighting the fire and made for a very comfortable night, I was very impressed! The facilities within the yurt were perfect, having everything u needed. The gibside estate is beautiful and the strawberry castle playarea was well loved by my children although it is a good hike up and down bank to get there. Overall we enjoyed our stay despite the few niggles the happy memories definately out weighed these. My children had so much fun and enjoyed the freedom the yurts and safe area provided. I would Definatly reccomend a stay here! Thank you west wood yurts for some wonderful memories :)

Thank you for taking the time to review West Wood Yurts - we're pleased to hear you had an enjoyable experience on the whole. Apologies for the ice pack delivery being late on the Tuesday, as you mention, we had a minor unforeseen problem with the freezer, which delayed the ice pack delivery that day - not a regular occurrence! Great to hear you had a good explore of the Gibside estate throughout your stay - a real addition to the camping experience at West Wood Yurts!
