This is a two-bedroomed, one-bathroom and separate toilet apartment, on the ground floor of a building near the Gonubie beachfront. The beds in both bedrooms are doubles (Queen sized? At any rate, more than big enough).
We were a little concerned that it might be noisy given its proximity to the Gonubie Hotel, but in fact it was very quiet - even on a night when the Springboks came within one point of defeating the All Blacks!
The only minor complaint was that we were unable to use the braai because the mechanism for getting the grid off was rusted solid.
Gonubie itself had a slightly sad air - on the weekend, during school holidays the beach was deserted. Many of the houses in the area are up for sale. In common with most of East London there was a lot of litter lying about and many of the back streets have spectacular potholes.
The beach and river are beautiful. The beach was spotless, but up the river at the Tidewaters picnic site the rubbish bins were broken and overflowing and there was trash everywhere.
If you want to step out for a drink, the Gonubie Hotel's pub is a few hundred metres away, with the boardwalk to the beach starting at the end of the carpark opposite the hotel. (The boardwalk also is sadly in need of repair. It looks as though it was damaged in a storm some years ago and now even the red tape that was put up to mark the damage has disintegrated.)
In summary: the apartment's location is great. There's even a bit of a view of the beach from the lounge. It's well equipped (aside from the rusty braai!). It's quiet, but within easy walking distance of the beach (and the bar at the hotel). What's not to like?
