Almost at the end of two months travelling New Zealand we visited Waipoua Lodge and found one of the best places of the whole journey: a perfect location surrounded by a wonderful scenery, offering spacious, comfortable room and delicious food. The warm hospitality of the hosts Fran and Ian makes the stay unforgettable. We will come back and plan more time for the stay - two nights were not enough to visit all the places of interest in the area and to savour Fran's cooking adequatly. A must for nature lovers and gourmets!

Thank you for your wonderful review - it was such a pleasure to meet you both and to hear all about your travels around our beautiful Aotearoa. Northland and the Kauri Coast are indeed a beautiful region and so easily accessible from Auckland, so we look forward to welcoming you back to show you even more.
Kindest regards
Ian & Fran

Friendly, professional, warm and welcoming. A perfect stay. Outstanding food. We were met by the two owners as if we were old friends and we will do our best to return. The stay was one if few private events during our tour to NZ universities. The rooms with excellent equipment and lovely beds are just perfect.

Brace yourself the best food and most relaxed atmosphere. Fran whips up a perfect soufflé for pudding without batting an eyelid. Ian gets you a glass of bubbles and sneaks in a wee port. The food is perfect. At breakfast the coffee machine produces a great flat white and everything down to the jam is homemade. But you're not just there for the food and wine. There's some big trees and wild beaches to see and Ian will tell you the best way to do it. We did the night time 'footprints' visit to the kauri forest and its
brilliant with the trees lit up with torches and Maori guides whose singing sends chills up the spine. They will even serve your dinner early and your pudding is waiting when you return from the Forrest. The star of the show at Waipoua Lodge is Bonnie the West Highland Terrier.

Thank you for writing a wonderful culinary review and also not forgetting the other fantastic reason for staying at the lodge ... our fantastic ancient and mighty kauri trees two of which have been growing here for 3,000 & 2,000 years! Bonnie, the star of the show, sends a big lick to your Westie Henry!

This was booked for us by New Zealand Fine tours so we did not know what to expect. We were very pleased with the accommodations, the hospitality and the food. Because of it's remoteness, Fran and Ian provide supper and it was the best meal we had on our vacation. The room (or should I say cabin) was very spacious and modern. A bit pricey but if 5 star+ is what you are looking for, this is the place.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It was a pleasure to work with New Zealand Fine Tours in providing you with your luxury experience. We are a New Zealand Qualmark 5 Star and Enviro Gold lodge and we appreciate the fact that you recognised that we do provide an extremely high level of guest service/amenities and do so in a very remote location and with only four spacious guest suites.
Kindest regards

We found this lodge by chance and what a wonderful discovery.

We thoroughly enjoyed our shot stay from the location, rooms and especially the warmth of our welcome by the hosts.

Dinner was a treat and breakfast a delight.

We shall return.

We stayed for 3 nights just before Christmas, a luxurious beginning to our New Zealand trip. It sits atop a hill on the winding main road, looking out over farmland, some of which is being reclaimed into forest. The immediate landscape is picturesque but not especially so; there's a souvenir shop with an ugly sign just across the road which gave us pause as we drove up, but we soon forgot about it when we saw the majestic tree in the front yard of the lodge. The lodge is a few minutes drive from the Kauri forest, ancient huge trees quite unlike other ancient huge trees you might have seen, such as redwoods, so don't miss it. Ian does a great job with the tour of the forest, full of information about the trees, their meaning for Mauri, and the history of logging of them. Fran cooked delicious meals, and it was a pleasure to wander over to the main house before meals for a glass or two of New Zealand wine, of which Ian has a fine selection. The main house has a nice feel to it, full of interesting artifacts and memorabilia that Fran and Ian will tell you about if you are interested. They also have two Kunekune pigs, which have to be seen to be believed. Our room was a short walk from the main house, spacious, clean and luxurious with a little porch area overlooking a piece of reclaimed forest, which has a short nature trail. We used the lodge as a base for trips to the surrounding area; there is lots to do and Ian will give you advice. One evening we drove to a nearby place which offers forest night walks, where we saw a Kiwi. There is no cell phone service but there is internet. We didn't turn the TV on so don't know about that. It's probably not really a place to hang out at during the day, but to return to in the evenings for warm welcome, good wine, and good food.

We have wanted to go to New Zealand for over 30 years and finally made the pilgrimage this month. We stayed with friends in Auckland and enjoyed good Kiwi hospitality, but nothing could compare with Fran and Ian out in the middle of nowhere!

I work in the hospitality industry and have been involved with many five star properties around the world. From the initial reservation through to when we left the lodge, Fran and Ian performed as well as any luxury operator. The room was very clean, the bed most comfortable, the setting of the lodge incredible and the food superb.

Fran is the chef and emailed a delightful menu to us before we arrive so that she could prepare a fresh meal. The food was prepared to perfection and well presented by Ian along with a great wine and beer selection. Breakfast in the morning was a buffet of fresh breads, fruits and cereals, followed by eggs prepared to our desire. Not sure how she does it that far away from civilization, but these were some of the best meals we have had in a long time.

On the morning of our departure Ian gave us a very informative presentation on the history of the Kuari Forest nearby. We had a lovely chat with Fran and then were on our way to see 1,500 year old trees! We highly recommend this lodge as the place to stay for a very unique experience only to be found in New Zealand.
