“Little bit of Heaven”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2013

What a beautiful place! We stopped here for a few short days on our month of travels throughout New Zealand. Absolute quiet and wonderful experience. Our host and hostess are Fran and Ian Farrant who make your stay even more lovely than ever expected. We were treated to amazing cuisine as Fran runs a cooking school. Fran even had us in the kitchen after dinner helping make souffles which were divine. This is the perfect place to stay when you are visiting the forest to view the giant trees. Waipoua Lodge has everything that you would ever want or need and the hospitality is beyond description! What a wonderful stay we had with amazing people. Don't think twice as you will be treated to memories that you will treasure for a lifetime. Enjoy a part of the country that has been restored with loving thought and hard work and sleep like a baby in elegant comfort.

Waipoua Lodge is located very conveniently at the southern edge of the Kauri Forest, a short drive from the famous giant trees. It is therefore a great place to overnight while travelling the west coast south of Hokianga. The Lodge is elegant and comfortable, and priced accordingly. Fran Farrant runs a cooking school and the food she prepares is superb.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review and we are delighted that you and your wife enjoyed your brief stay with us after visiting the ancient kauri trees. We recognise that our prices not only reflect our five star status but also the fact that we only have four luxury suites and as a result offer a very personalised level of service and accommodation. Kindest regards Ian & Fran

We stayed at the Waipoua Lodge as part of a 3 day private tour with TIME Unlimited Tours during the Thanksgiving holiday. The owners of the lodge, Ian and Fran Farrant, were so warm and welcoming, it felt like coming home after a long journey. The lodge and its surrounding grounds are nothing short of spectacular and we really enjoyed having the private bungalow that we were assigned to. The bungalow was so private, with everything you could possibly need to be comfortable. Very, very nice! Fran is an incredible chef, and dinner and dessert were amazing! Fran even showed me how she makes her soufflé. I do believe that she even holds cooking classes sometimes. It was neat to see the way that Fran and Ian are so passionate about their surroundings and how much they care for the environment and also for the preservation of the Kauri trees. The best moments at the lodge were definitely spending time with the Farrants and their Westies, Hammish and Bonnie and their piggies, Holly and Bessy (Ian's babies!!). We even liked Mr. McFuggly their cat. I love how they have lovingly restored the buildings and the grounds, but most of all the warmth and sense of family you get when you visit!! We're definitely staying here again!!

Thank you so much for your wonderful and full review and we are delighted that you enjoyed so many aspects of your stay with us. You are right - we are both very passionate about our environment and are actively involved in the preservation and regeneration of the Waipoua Forest. Our lives are but a minute 'blip' in time when we compare it to the thousands of years which these trees have been quietly growing here. What greater pleasure than to share the passion and experience with our guests from around the globe!
Kindest regards
Fran & Ian

The Waipoua lodge is a historical remarkable place. Ian and Fran emphasize there intent to reestablish the long and interesting history of the "house" / lodge being located so close to the forrest and the unique Kauri trees (e.g. Tane Mahuta). They have invested time, effort and money to renovate the spacious rooms in the luxury cottages. And it is simply great what they have achieved. All rooms (sleeping as well the "living room" and bathroom) were furnished with a lot of taste. The gourmet dinners (cooked with healthy ingredients) as well as the breakfasts which Fran prepared were extraordinary - simply very tasteful. At the end of the dinner it was a real pleasure to have a last, excellent single malt served by Ian who complements Fran in giving their guests the feeling of being treated so well. We can only recommend this wonderful lodge. You will experience an outstanding stay with lovely people.

Room Tip: As mentioned before the rooms in the luxury lodge are in top shape. They are decorated in a lovely a...

Thank you for your lovely review and we are delighted that you enjoyed the history of the lodge so much. It is hard to believe that only 100 years ago a young couple settled the land and spent 14 years felling the kauri trees, getting the wood milled and building their homestead. During these years they lived in a one room 'whare' (hut) and raised 7 chlldren! Times must have been very difficult and extremely hard work surviving in a remote location such as the Waipoua Forest. Travellers not wanting to continue at night into the forest, knocked at their door and so it all started. Today our guests can enjoy all the history and natural environment in the comfort of 5 star luxury accommodation!
Kindest regards
Fran & Ian

Ian and Fran go out of their way to welcome you into their home. You feel like a friend of the family, not merely a hotel guest. Fran's prowess in the kitchen is legendary. Her obvious love and respect for the food will give you a culinary experience you will not forget. For the animal lover, their delightful pets make being away from your own pets a little easier. And should you run into a glitch with your travel plans, Ian will dive into finding a solution faster than you can imagine. Waipoa Lodge's proximity to the Waipoa Forest is perfect for the nature lover looking for a spiritual experience. I have stayed at many five star hotels, and Ian and Fran of Waipoa Lodge are head and shoulders above them. They manage to provide exquisite hospitality with grace and ease. This is a must stay!!!

Really enjoyed our recent visit to Waipoua Lodge. Fran and Ian are thoughtful, welcoming hosts. While we are Kiwis, and know the area reasonably well, they have lots of knowledge about the area, things to do, etc. Can see both Kiwis and international tourists loving Waipoua Lodge.

For us it was a special occasion getaway. The suite was comfortable and well appointed, with nice extra touches, and the food by Fran was excellent. The dining room allows for chatting with other guests or not, depending on one's preference. Also really enjoyed the session in the kitchen to observe the signature lemon souffles being made.

We will definitely return!

Thank you for your lovely review and we are delighted that you and your partner really enjoyed your stay. The Kauri Coast is a much undiscovered region and so many 'kiwis' have yet to explore their own back yard. It is unbelievable that we have two trees here, one of which is 2,000 years' old and the other 3,000 years old ... that dates back to bronze age man! We look forward to being able to show you more of this wonderful environment.
Kind regards
Fran & Ian

We stayed for two nights and had such a great time - excellent food, so well looked after and thoroughly spoiled. Nothing was too much trouble. Visiting Fran in her kitchen where she shared many of her top tips was fun, and meeting the pets made it seem like a home away from home. We were visiting New Zealand from the U K and booking on the Internet was very straightforward. We loved our suite which had everything we needed, including fab toiletries ( my face felt peachy smooth after the Mud mask!) home made bath salts for a lovely soak after trudging round the forest and electric blankets on an enormous and very comfy bed for chilly mountain nights. We hope to return to N Z in a couple of years - and a return visit to Waipoua Lodge will definitely be on the itinerary - is an easy morning's drive from north Auckland. Thank you Fran and Ian for a really super time

Thank you for your lovely review and being such a passionate self-taught foodie I do so enjoy inviting guests into the kitchen to share some of my favourite tips and ideas. You are right the mud masque is very special and your skin feels beautifully smooth and silky, plus the mud turns a beautiful shade of deep blue which with its natural ingredients is so reflective of our beautiful land - Aotearoa. We look forward to welcoming you back to the lodge in a couple of years time.
Kind regards
Fran & Ian
