“DON'T GO THERE!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2010

Last week we had a sudden and very distressing family emergency so we tried to contact Coast & Country Hotels to re-arrange our forthcoming weekend break at the Derwentwater to another time .. in October perhaps. Not an unreasonable request one would have thought.

And all day we tried to make contact with the Coast & Country booking line and just couldn't get them to answer. Coast and Country are part of the Shearings group which own the Derwentwater. So in the evening we rang the hotel in desperation and the male receptionist told us that he couldn't do anything about it and that we must do it through Coast and Country. We tried to tell him that we had been trying all day .................. but he wasn't prepared to listen and just put the phone down. At a time of much worry and concern we could have done without this.

Eventually in response to a message we left on their out of hours voicemail we received a curt message from Coast and Country informing us that our booking could not be transferred to another date and has been cancelled and that we have forfeited the entire cost which we had paid in advance ... £290.

It would appear that the hotel manager is never available as he spends all his time crouched over his PC in the back office responding defensively to critical reviews from disappointed and sometimes angry clients who have paid good money for third rate service from a third rate company. In the absence of the manager, the hotel appears to be run by a male receptionist who specialises in arrogant disregard for the public and allies this to abusive behaviour .. obviously an honours graduate from the Shearings training academy .. their very own charm school.

Looking on the bright side to all this .. there are so many bad reviews that it may be a blessing in disguise not to stay there.

Earlier in the year there were reports that Shearings which started off as a small bus company was up for sale but it would appear there were no buyers .. and one doesn't have to look far to wonder why. It needs to be acquired by a reputable company which is prepared to spend time and money in restoring the portfolio of hotels to their former pre-Shearings status. And there needs to be a mission to recruit quality staff with a mission statement of customer attentiveness.

All in all a dreadful experience .. and we never actually got to booking in!

The hits were that the food was nice, breakfast and evening meal. The location was lovely too. The misses were that the paper on our ceiling room was peeling off, The shower wasn't working properly. The staff seemed to be qite untrained in how to deal with customers, as they were not always very helpful with queries or when special requests were made, 'have you a pen'? 'no sorry we only have one'! 'may I use the phone for a minute'? 'No sorry you will have to use the one in your room' (a few flights up the stairs) The bar was ridiculous the wait to be served took ages as most of he time it was unmanned. At 10-15pm a packed lunch was requested for the next morning at 9am the request was denied as it was too late! That aint customer service. Staff training definitely needed, there was quite a lot of foreign staff maybe their cultures are different to ours. However saying all that we had a brilliant time because we made a big joke of everything and made light of it all we had not laughed so much for ages.

I strongly disagree with the negative comments about this hotel and I'm not particulary 'easy to please'.

Location, cleanliness, and food is first class. The staff are a delight, welcoming, friendly and fun though professional at all times. The grounds are a haven and a short walk leads you to the lake with wonderful views. Great too that the hotel allows pets, nothing better than sharing your ramble with your pet dog.

I'd like to particulary mention Mike and David on the bar, Heidi at reception and Laura in the restaurant. Sincere thanks guys for a lovely stay!

i stopped in this hotel a couple of years ago for a buisness trip to carlisle, i had one of the best experinces in the hotel you could have! i have recently been back to the hotel and i was in for a shock, i do believe all the previous staff had left due to new management, the new management! what a joke, when i came to check in i was told i was in a certain room, when i got to that room, there was dirty towels on the floor and the bed was unclean and had been slept in. i was not happy with this and consulted the receptionist whom told me what shall i do about it, housekeeping have gone, ill get someone upto it when they arnt to busy!!!!!!! what!!!!!! the food was very basic and could easily tell it came from the freezer, what happened to the good home cooked food from the real chefs that wernt there, i was quite upset to realise debra wasnt there anymore as she had the restaurant under control, the place is now a sham, staff swearing at each other and eating at the podium!!!, was promised to have a chat with the manager, russell, the manager whom had no customer service at all, face like a wet weekend in keswick and dam right rude. will never be back in again and i have complained to shearings head office!! bring back the derwentwater

For people who,ve stayed in Shearings hotels before, this hotel is above the average. I understand that some people who stayed here under the previous owners are not too keen on the present set up. Speaking for my wife and myself, we have just come back from a four night break and thought the hotel fine. It is in a great location with fine gardens and meadowland. The food was a bit mundane but well cooked and presented, and our standard room was chincy but comfortable. If you like "Semprini" type piano playing you will like the occasional entertainment. The car park needs to be improved, and access to the hotel can be a bit constricted.

I disagree entirely with any adverse comments .We had a very enjoyable stay with no comlaints.Every aspect was more than satisfactory. For walkers ,the situation is ideal as the "Honister Rambler" bus service ( to Catbells, Grange, Seatoller. Honister Pass. Buttermere, Lorton ) stops outside the hotel. Also it is only a short walk into Keswick.

We have just returned from a four day break at this hotel, we paid an extra £40 for a lake view and if we craned our necks over the roof of a nearby house, we could just about see a corner of the lake. The room was very clean and about what you would expect from a standard room in a three star (there were no upgrade rooms available) the double bed was not too comfortable and we did wake up with aching backs ! The food is ok, nothing special, would advise against ordering a greek salad for starters a few lettuce leaves in a cereal bowl with 3 olives, two or three small bits of feta and no dressing. The staff in the dining room seemed a little overworked and there was a bit of a language barrier on occasions. They were very polite but one or two seemed a bit inexperienced. On one occasion we went to reception to hand in our key for the day and were kept waiting for a good few minutes by a female receptionist who obviously wanted to finish what she was doing before she even acknowledged us.

The grounds of the hotel are stunning and you can walk down to the lake in a few minutes, the conservatory bar is very stylish and comfortable, but if we had known how quiet it was going to be, without any entertainment (apart from a solitary piano player on one night who could hardly be heard ) we would have gone somewhere else. I have never been to a more boring hotel in the evenings.

All in all an ok stay, if you like peace and quiet and middle of the road food you will be ok here.
