“Excellent Value.”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

We found the hotel to be very friendly and the staff helpful. Our room was clean, warm and comfortable. I was able to use my Ipod throughout the hotel (including the room) and had a very good connection. The restaurant was on the large size, and kind of old fashioned, but the meals were presented nicely, and the staff very efficient and hard working. The food was of a good standard considering what we'd payed for our three night stay. There were three courses, and although the portions were small, it was more than enough for us.

We have stayed at the Derwentwater Hotel a number of times when it was privately run and always enjoyed it. Our last visit however will be the last.

We were given room 103. The room was very dated and radiator didnt work which is not good on a snowy January weekend. Worse of all was the bathroom. Mould growing on the ceiling, between tiles and on bath sealant. Rusty radiator, bath panel lose and hooks pulled off the door. We complained and were moved to a "deluxe room" which was much better but tired.

Food at the Derwentwater was always pretty good when it was privately run but even that has gone downhill. Cheap printed menus and limited choice of dishes. We found on both nights that some dishes were not available making the choice even more limited and forcing us to upgrade at an extra cost.

There was nothing wrong with the actual food but it can best be described as bland. The best dish we had all weekend was the cheeseboard!

The hotel is in a fantastic location and makes a perfect winter break but I think its the last time we will visit. The spa is part of another hotel about 3 miles away and is excellent.

To Yorks45.

Thank you for your review.

I am saddened to hear that you feel that the hotel has gone downhill, as you will see from many of our reviews this is not the general feedback we receive. Room 103 is a standard room and we moved you upon request to a Deluxe room which is tastefully decorated and one of our most sought after rooms. Our menus are designed to offer more choice than ever before with upgrades to dishes such as Duck and Sirloin Steaks at a very reasonable rate and are professionally printed on quality card. I do hope that you return to the hotel again in the near future.

Stayed at this hotel Monday to Friday 28.1.13 to 1.2.13. We got allocated room 105 - very brown and dull and small - bathroom was a joke, tiny little shelf above sink, nowhere to put anything. You couldn't swing a mouse in it never mind a cat. We asked to be moved and we were allocated another room on the ground floor 001. This room was bigger but very shabby. I was full of cold but my hubby said it was a bit smelly. It was not very clean either but we have bad backs and the bathroom in the other room was aching our backs as there was no room and we were told that this was the only room they had left, apart from a de-lux room which was going to cost us an extra £44 per night - no thank you. After a couple of days my cold was getting a little better and I could smell it, it was disgusting, foisty and damp, rotton.com. We only had another night to go so put up with it. All that said though the food was excellent and the staff were very friendly too. We were with 6 other couples who had no problem with their rooms, just unlucky me.

Room Tip: Do not take room 105 or 001. 001 Scruffy.

Thank you for your review.

It was good to meet you and your large group earlier this month and it was good to get positive feedback from most of your group during their stay. I am sorry that you felt that your room did not meet the standards of your friends rooms. I will investigate the issues you had with room 105. I am pleased that you found the food excellent and my staff friendly.

My partner and I recently stayed here we had a lovely stay in a room with fantastic views of the gardens and lake. All the staff were very helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome. Keswick was only a short walk away with lots of shops and places to eat. The food in the hotel restaurant was great with lots of choice, and you could also choose from a wide variety of bar snacks for when the restaurant was closed. Overall it's was a great stay and we will definitely be returning this year.

You arrive at this hotel by what seems to be the back door, but don't be put off by this. Once inside it looks like the brouchure. We were there when there were about 30 rooms occupied and so not very busy. The dining room was light and airy and the food was excellent. Breakfast was help yourself to cereals etc and then order your hot food from the waiter. The location for walkers could not be better and the walk into Keswick was easy for the less mobile. The weather had been rainy (as we all know) and the grounds a bit soggy but the gentle walk down to the lake was still worthwhile. Our room had had a refurbishment but the wardrobe was tiny and would have been difficult if staying for longer than the 3 nights (3 nights for the price of 2). There was no entertainment on that we were aware off (maybe due to the low occupancy) but we spent our evening in the small room with the open fire, (this is the room where the dogs are allowed) and chatted with other visitors. We went in December 2012 and have earmarked it for a return at a different time of year.

I am pleased that you had a great time on your pre Christmas break at our hotel and that you gave us 5 stars for value and that you found all aspects of your stay to your liking. We do not have entertainment over the weekend however we do have live entertainment on a Tuesday night.

We visited this hotel for afternoon tea after a walk with friends, having been attracted by the "Walkers Welcome" signs outside. As requested by signs, we removed our boots before sitting in the conservatory, where there were two tables of guests finishing Sunday lunch. The waiter walked past us four times before we asked if we could order, and were told we had to order at the bar, which we did. Ten minutes later the tea arrived, and shortly thereafter the very (tasty pannini) our friends had ordered turned up. Then their cakes arrived, but another 10 minutes later the teacakes we had ordered had not arrived. My wife went back to the bar, which was unmanned, and then went to reception, where she was told by the receptionist (at 2.50pm) that her shift had not started and my wife would need to wait for someone at the bar. It was yet another 10 minutes before two very dry toasted teacakes arrived - possiblly they had to be defrosted before they were toasted.

OK its out of season, and not busy, and perhaps we were more trouble than we were worth. But when a sign says "walkers welcome", it creates an expectation which was certainly not delivered on this visit.

Dear reviewer,

Thank you for your post regarding your stop for lunch. I am sorry to hear that you had to wait to be served, it does state on the menu's however that you must order at the Bar. I am glad that the panini that was ordered was very tasty. Your experience however with reception is totally unacceptable and certainly is not the normal practice at the hotel and for this I personally apologise. We do get several walkers using the hotel throughout the year and walkers are most definately welcome and looked after.

I stayed at the Derwentwater Hotel over New Year with my partner and a young baby.
We stayed in the apartments, the rooms were fantastic, excellent facilities (equipped with everything you need) and very clean.
The five course meal and evening entertainment for New Years Eve was excellent and the staff were great.
Overall a fantastic hotel, definitely a 5* break, will definitely return.

Thank you Sarah for your positive review of your stay in the apartments over the New Year period. I am also pleased that you came across and enjoyed your New Years Eve Gala dinner and the evening entertainment. It is nice to hear when a young family really enjoy themselves in the apartments and that you found the rooms and the facilities fantastic
