“New Year Celebration”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

Just spent a first rate short break at the Derwentwater, over the new year period. Accomodation was excellent, very clean and warm. The evening meal was substantial and delicious, the beef cooked to perfection. We the sat in the lounge and enjoyed the entertainment provided by a guitar duo, they worked very hard and were ideal entertainment for the hotel. The staff and management worked extremely hard, and always with a smile. They even gave us a glass of champers for the bells, well done to them all.
The other evenings entertainment was provide by a very pleasant piano combo, ideal for the atmosphere of the hotel. Overall a relly nice break in beautiful, if somewhat wet, surroundings,
on our departure we were offered a coffee and a piece of delicous fruit cake, a relly nice end to our stay. We will definately return.

Room Tip: upgrade to a superior, with lake view.

Many thanks for your review of your New Year break.

I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay and that you found the accomodation excellent and very clean and warm. Its also pleasing that you found my staff to be hard working and polite. The music brothers played for almost 4 hours and I am thrilled that you really enjoyed the night. I will pass on your comments to the chef with regards to the delicious beef and the Christmas fruit cake.

I look forward to your next visit,

regards

Michael

I have stayed couple of times. First time with elderly parents, there is a lift so they managed ok.
Second time I took my neighbour for a birthday treat and when we checked into our room we had a lake view. To top it all I found a box of thortons chocolates in my room welcoming me back excellent touch.
I am booking another weekend break in Feb 2013 and looking forward to it.

The food is bab and plenty choice and staff very friendly.the rooms are good size and bathrooms always clean.

I can't praise this hotel enough,, fantastic well worth it.

just spent a great weekend at Derwentwater Hotel where all staff could not have been more helpful or polite. Meals were varied and quality very good for Shearings hotel. Entertainment on Hogmanay was very good but on other 2 nights was best described as adequate background
music. Room 119 was definately on the cramped side but acceptable and there are room upgrades available if you are inclined to spend time just relaxing in your room. Needless to say scenery round about is quite stunning even in the damp and overcast conditions to be expected
at this time of year.
Will certainly return to this hotel.

Room Tip: size of standard rooms seem to vary considerably so if you tend to spend a lot of time in room,sugge...

I and my family had a one week break in summer 2012 in a self-catering cottage ( the Lingholme) opposite the main hotel. Hotel enjoys excelent setting and great views.Staff friendly, and food good.

However,....this did not make up for damp and mildew coming through the groundfloor bedroom wall at ground floor, and the constantly overflowing sewer directly outside the cottage door, which rather put a dampner on the break!.Reported faults on arrival to duty manager with request to be moved, but no alternative accomodation avaialble. E-mailed head office on my return from holiday, without response. Therefore mixed experience of what ought to ought to have been a great holiday.

Thank you of your review of your summer holiday.
I am sorry that there were issues with the sewers at the time of your stay and that this affected your stay. It is good to hear though that you liked your Apartment in the Mews (Lingholm) and that you felt that the staff were friendly and you enjoyed the food and the setting. I am sorry that you had a mixed experience and hope this has not put you off a return visit in the future.

I stayed in this hotel between Christmas and New Year 2012 and in spite of the atrocious weather had a very nice time. The staff are particularly friendly and helpful and can't do enough to make you feel part of "the family". The restaurant staff are diverse in their nationalities but all speak perfect English and seem to have adopted the English humour!
When considering this hotel as a possible venue, you must accept that it is a typical "English type" hotel with its little idiosyncrasies, such as; its creaking floor boards; plumbing that sometimes takes an age for the hot water to appear (though it always does and there is no shortage); separate hot and cold taps (it must be the only place in the world that doesn’t use mixer taps); heating systems that are not the most efficient, but more than serve their purpose, especially on the cold winter days I have just experienced. Having said all that, I must admit that these points make the hotel what it is, a very comfortable, relaxing home from home.
The downside (and they are few) are that there is no satellite TV (but who wants to watch TV with such good views out of the window!) and there is no internet access in the rooms (only in the reception area)
The location of this hotel is one of its greatest attributes, being situated at the top of Derwent Water, and within a 15 minute easy walk to Keswick town centre. It commands some of the most impressive views from its lake-side rooms, and even from the none lake-side rooms the views are tremendous, of the surrounding hills. The grounds of the hotel run down to the lake and contain a “wet lands” area where many varieties of ducks and birds can be observed (and the occasional deer). A small putting green, with picnic tables around it, offers a nice little diversion when the weather permits.
On the whole I wouldsay "good value for money", I highly recommend it hotel and I look forward to revisiting it again in the summer.

Room Tip: From my experience Rooms 104 (a modernised room) & 114 commnd great views of the lakes

From Wayfarer Bill.
Just returned from a friday to monday break at the Derwentwater Hotel. Half board, 3 nights £258. Canna be bad value that. Room, although not the best view,119, it was cosy, warm, clean and ample to me and my wifes' needs. Food was exceptional. Bordering on al a carte. Me personally, usually having no plate showing at home, had reservations when courses arrived. fear not. Tasty, plenty and presented artistically and piping hot. Nothing more required other than a longer stay! Blessed with sunshine it showed the hotel, garden and conservatory in true splendour. Staff were very polite and accommodating. Very worthy of a tip in the gratuities box at the restaurant door. Will definately be back. Shop around for offers via Newspaper voucher numbers. You could save a bundle while spending a little.

Room Tip: Like I said in my review. Shop around and compare the price. You will be surprised.

Dear Wayfarer Bill,

I am glad that you found your room 119 most comfortable for your weekend break.

It is good to hear that you found our food exceptional. I will pass this on to Dan our head chef who will be delighted to hear your comments.

I do hope that you return to the Derwentwater for more pampering in the near future.

Just returned from a weekend break at the Derwentwater Hotel. We made our booking through Travel Republic and we chose the deluxe room option. On arrival at the hotel we were given room 152. I was rather apprehensive as we had stayed in this room 5 years ago, however, as it was a deluxe room i assumed it must have been one of the refurbished rooms. Wrong. It was the same room only now much shabbier. The cabinet that had housed the t,v, now had a flat screen t.v. plonked on the top of it which was totally at odds with the very old furniture in the room. The ironing board attatched to the wall had a dirty cover hanging off it. There were two old mismatching armchairs. The dressing gowns provided were grey and not at all fluffy and there was some old fruit in a bowl. The only good thing about the room were the fantastic views from the large windows. As the hotel was full we knew it would be pointless asking to be moved, but we were so disappointed. We have stayed at the Derwentwater quite a few times over the years but fear that this may have been our last visit. Such a shame because the conservatory and gardens are lovely.

Room Tip: Ask for refurbished room

Thank you worthyone for your review

I am sorry that you found our superior room not to your liking. We have recently upgraded all the televisions throughout the hotel and the manor apartments to flat screen, freeview televisions. The delux rooms at the hotel offer the most amazing views over derwentwater and are decorated in keeping with the style of the building, our superior rooms have all been refurbished to a high modern standard and perhaps they would be more suited to you if you do decide to return.
The dressing gowns are laundered off site and are in excellent condition as are the slippers that are also provided on the delux package.
