I don't generally leave reviews but "The old Rectory" has prompted me to make an exception! My wife and myself really enjoyed our stay here! Everything was to a very high standard without feeling stuffy and I would look forward to staying here again! I liked the "Feel" of the place the moment I parked my car in the spacious and secluded parking courtyard and it just got better from there ! Nothing not to like about this really good guest house, and to top it Paul the owner couldn't of been more accommodating !!!
If you are looking in this area then look no further than here !

We stayed at the Old Rectory for 3 nights in April 2011. It is a lovely small B & B situated in a great location to explore York, Thirsk and the surrounding areas of Yorkshire. The B & B is family run and the owners Rachael and Paul were so welcoming on arrival, we immediately felt right at home.

The rooms are a good size and cleaned to a high standard. Our room was at the back of the house overlooking the garden and it was very quiet. Although the B & B is on a main road you can’t really hear the noise of the traffic at night.

Breakfast was one of the highlights of our stay here – everything was fresh and cooked to order and you could have pretty much what you liked – a choice of full English breakfast or there was toast, fruit, juices and cereals to choose from if you preferred.

During our stay we spent a day in the wonderful city of York – it is a must. However we would definitely recommend using the park and ride there rather than driving to York itself – it was just so easy and stress-free, and didn’t take very long at all. Places to see whilst in York include – York Minster, The National Railway Museum, The Viking Centre, The Dungeons and Betty’s tea rooms are just a few but there really is a lot to see and do. Rachael and Paul are very knowledgeable about the area and have plenty of suggestions for days out and nice walks near the B & B if you get stuck for inspiration.

Overall we would recommend this B & B to anyone wanting a quiet and relaxing place to stay surrounded in beautiful countryside.

My fiancée and I spent Christmas Eve here and though I hardly ever (never) write reviews for the places we stay I felt The Old Rectory deserved a few words on how wonderful we found it! From the moment we stepped through the door we felt utterly at home, Rachel and Paul were so welcoming that I felt I could have quite happily stood and chatted to them all night (along with their adorable son!) The B&B itself has been beautifully decorated and we loved everything, from the service down the breakfast served Christmas day. I full recommend a stay here and look forward to (hopefully!) staying again!
Thank you for making our Christmas extra special!

Sam & Rob x

Travelling over from North Wales we didn't arrive till after ten. The owner stayed up waitng up for us to arrive and was extremely pleasant about it. The 'long trek' from the car park is in fact about 20 yards, which we covered with no problems but, hey, each to their own.

The room we were given had a beautiful four poster bed in it, which complimented the high quality, clean decor and furniture. The room was lovely and warm and stayed that way all weekend, unlike the ice-box I had in Newcastle recently. Seriously, the room was decorated with period touches but didn't feel like a museum.

Breakfast was really nice, with fresh local produce, plenty of tea and a warm smile from the host.

Downside is that breakfast was only served between 8 and 9, so no long lie in here. Also the sink in our room was outside the bathroom and about ten feet away. But, really is that important? They could have put the sink in the bathroom by knocking the period features out and turning it into small Travelodge style room and they should be congratulated on having the good sense to understand that it's the charm and quirkiness that sells this as somewhere that you really should try if you're going to York.

Stayed two nights at the Old Rectory, room 4. House is beautiful from the outside (specially against the blue skies we had!) - spotlessly clean as you enter, uncluttered but still inviting although if you're looking for an olde worlde country cottage type of place you might find it a little "cool"... dressers with decorate plates and rugs with floral prints is NOT the style of this place! To me it was very welcoming and pleasing to the eye without being chinzy or show-housey. It has an interesting history too...

Quirky things dotted around if you take a look.

Spacious car park at back of property but you have to walk down a short lane round to the front, own front door key to come and go as you please.

Hosts were lovely - friendly & v helpful (even gave us a hand drawn map of some local points of interest). Rachel was particularly helpful with an original booking that had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances which we then re-booked for a later date. And Paul did a great job on the breakfast run.

Room 4 is at the top of the house with views over the side patio/lane. Quite spacious although if this room was for four adults (given it has two double beds) it might be a little crowded if fully occupied. Spotlessly clean. Huge TV on the wall which I thought was a little out of character, but I'm sure a room without a huge tv these days would cause more negative comments than not!! WIth two beds to pick from, we went for the one with bedside units/lights... which was very comfy and quite large (queen or king?) The second bed was quite soft to sit on, so might be more suited to those who prefer a softer mattress.

It might not be the show room of the house but it was more than acceptable for what we wanted - somewhere to sleep and have breakfast! If you go to York to spend time sitting indoors admiring the view from the window, you are kind of missing the point!

Very quiet location so was able to sleep with the window open. One room we passed (room 2 I think) has the biggest bed I've ever seen...!

Room 4 has a big bathroom with bath/shower. Also views over the gdns and countryside beyond.

Breakfast was really nice - cereals, fruit, yogurts plus the full english which was nicely cooked. Top ups of tea and toast are no problem. Only three tables for breakfast tho' so if you're late down u might have to share. The B&B has its own chickens so all eggs are home grown!...

Location is ideal as just 10mins up the A19 is the park and ride into york city which is £2.50 return for adults and much less hassle than trying to park in town. Drops off and picks up right by the minster with i'm sure numeous other stops around the town. The other way you have Kilburn (with the white chalk horse), Byland Abbey and lots of nice villages. No where within walking distances to eat/drink, but Coxwold has a superb pub/restaurant which if you don't mind a 15min drive down windy country lands is well worth a visit.

Would definitely recommend the Old Rectory to anyone wanting a comfy clean friendly place to stay in an ideal location for York or surrounding countryside.

From the moment that you first step through the door you are made to feel most welcome by Rachel and Paul.

Our room was at the front of the house and beautifully furnished to a very high standard with great attention to detail. There were tea/coffee/hot chocolate making facilities, bottled water, a wall mounted television and free WIFI. We had a large, comfortable four poster bed and even though the house is on a main road we were never troubled by traffic noise and slept well during out stay. The bathroom was large with a roll top bath and separate shower cubicle. Again, attention to detail included fluffy towels on a heated towel rail, bathrobes and Cath Kidston toiletries.

Breakfasts were generous, tasty, freshly cooked and there was plenty of choice.

Rachel and Paul really are a very friendly couple and go that extra mile to make you feel welcome. They even dried a pair of waterlogged shoes and helped to take our luggage to the car. They can recommend good places for evening meals and Paul is a fount of knowledge when it comes to suggesting places to visit and happily provides maps for sightseeing drives.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with them in their lovely house and would highly recommend it.

From the start we were warmly welcomed by the family and made to feel right at home. The room was large and comfortably furnished, and the bathroom was equally good. The property has been beautifully restored with good attention to detail. Everything was clean and kept tidy all week, and the breakfasts were good every day. Our hosts were friendly and gave good advice about local eateries for evening meals, local attractions, transport etc. All in all, a lovely place to stay and we would thoroughly recommend it!
