After a less than happy experience at a neighbouring waterfront high end restaurant we decided to go to Manta. From the first moment upon arrival, we were greeted warmly and led to our table. Our server introduces himself, Charles, and it is apparent he is a professional and very welcoming. Service was wonderfully attentive allowing us time between courses with no rushed feeling at all. The food was excellent. We shared a starter, along with salads and mains. The lamb was beautifully cooked to each person's preference. Every aspect of our dinners was perfect and in fact we intend to return to Manta with 2 other couples this Friday as we know we will have a wonderful evening. The setting is romantic with a very pleasant guitar being played in the background from 6-9...
I would not hesitate now to recommend this restaurant over the other one just south of Mauna Kea Resort.

The food at Manta is always nicely done, but the real treat is listening to Karl Kasberg on the keyboard inside. Most people sit outside on the patio but just inside, and still open to the outside view and sounds, you can listen to the great keyboard stylings of Karl Kasberg. He is an excellent entertainer and a wonderful asset for Manta.

This where we had our "last night's dinner in Hawaii." Wonderful fish in elegant setting at fair prices. Wine list is expensive. You have view of 210-degree view of bay, beach and sunset overlooking lush gardens and lawn. The tiki torches burning on the garden pathways give it a classy feel. This restaurant is in the Mauna Kea Hotel. If not staying there, just valet car. Great service.

First call: "are you staying at the hotel"? No, I am at the Shores of Waikola. "well, sorry we have no room for you". 2nd call 2 days later, "No we have no availability, if you are not staying in the hotel." 3rd call, 5 days later for an off night, "No, we cannot accommodate your request if you are not in the hotel..."
Wanted to spend my $300 there but never got the chance. Their loss. Unless you are staying there, dont bother calling this place. If you tell them you are staying there, they will check the room number, so not fib. No aloha spirit here.

I look forward to a meal at the Manta every holiday season. While the setting was beautiful as usual, I found the menu had changed substantially and not for my personal liking. In the past, there was more asian and hawaiian flavours used with a focus on local ingredients, and this time the menu seemed very french, with every item doused in butter or cream. My entire dinner party was in a "butter hangover" today and all concluded that the meal was delicious, but we would rather visit other restaurants along the coast before running back. The potato and leek soup was delicious (but very heavy) and all the entrees were good, but rather small portions sizes for the high prices paid and very rich. If you like rich, creamy flavours with a french flair, this is a good spot. If you prefer lighter, local fare, try the clambake on the beach for fresh seafood and sashimi. As a side note, they no longer seem to have their wine guy around, and our server had very little experience with the wine menu, which makes it difficult if you want to try a new wine.
