“Perfect in every way”
Reviewed April 18, 2014

Having previously enjoyed a couple of meals at the Black Swan before we decided to book a night stay.I can honestly say that we cannot fault anything. The room was perfect ( four poster and copper bath) Like many others we decided on the tasting menu and were just blown away.Even the breakfast was michelin star quality. As there are only 4 rooms we all took breakfast together in a cosy pary of the restaurant. The staff were exceptional with their vast knowledge of the food being served and the wine to compliment it. We will certainly be back again.

Room Tip: If you budget allows book the four poster with the copper bath.

I booked the Dinner Bed and Breakfast (4 poster bed) package as a present for my fiance's birthday. I also paid an additional £25 per head to upgrade to the 9 course taster menu (note to hotel....on booking page it says you can upgrade to the "7" course taster when it was in fact the "9" course taster).

Upon arrival we fell in love with the area - oldstead is just along the road from the very picturesque village of Kilburn and it is just inside the North Yorks Moor Park area. It is a quiet country lane and we were pleasantly surprised at how quaint the Black Swan from outside. We were even happier when we went inside as we quite like olde worlde places and this fit the brief perfectly. Lovely dark wood interior and very intimate yet relaxing and comfortable. The bar area is only small which makes it even more of a dream find.

We ate a beautiful 3 course sunday lunch which at £28 a head for a Michelin Star Restaurant was unbelievable value for money. It was delicious. Not a thing on the plates that we didn't think were delicious.

We were then escorted to our rooms, and i have to say that my fiance shed a tear as the room together with the food was his idea of a perfect romantic break.
The room was decorated with dark wood furniture again and a very impressive four poster bed with beautiful teal and brown colours throughout. The bathroom was huge with a cast iron, double ended bath with a shower big enough for 2 all with beautiful tiling
and the extra bonus of being unable to hear any noise whatsoever from other guest rooms or thhe restaurant itself. Bliss.
We then spent 3 hours in the evening having our divine 9 course taster menu and this was our first, yet not to be our last experience of fine dining Michelin standard. Each course was beautifully presented and described to us in detail and it tasted exquisite. We felt satisfyingly full yet not bloated by the time we had finished.

the whole experience was amazingly comfortable, unpretentious and relaxing. We left the next morning feeling incredibly relaxed and recharged and we cannot wait to return. It may actually become an anniversary special for us.

Room Tip: Wakendale room is at end and very quiet and private

We had a short break in Yorkshire, visiting a number of foodie establishments. By far the best was The Black Swan. We'd booked a special package including a one night stay at the B&B plus the nine course taster menu in the restaurant. The Michelin star rating was testament to the wonderful food served to us, and the bedroom was very comfortable and well appointed. This is a excellently run family business and I hope it goes from strength to strength. Would we go again -certainly would!

We stayed one night in the four poster room and had the 9 course taster menu plus a half bottle of Champagne on arrival.

Firstly to the room, it was pleasant, reasonably well equipped, with ironing facilities, an occasionally pixelating TV, tea making facilities with fresh milk in the mini bar which is always a nice touch and chocolate brownies to have a nibble on. What the room lacked was a full length mirror, task lighting at the dressing table which is where I like to do my hair & make up, this is a frequent complaint of mine at hotels and one of the lamps next to the sofa didn't work.

The bathroom was pleasant, with a deep copper bath, walk in shower & plenty of Molten Brown goodies. There was only two large towels, which is a problem when you both use the shower/bath facilities, most women use an extra towel as a turban, leaving none for your partner.

When dressing for dinner, be aware there is a short walk outside to the dining room, a brolly is thoughtfully provided for inclement weather but I failed to pack a suitable coat which would have been advisable on this chilly night.

The staff were extremely attentive, pleasant and professional and every question was met with sound understanding and an agreeable answer.

A delicious Amuse Bouche was followed by the nine course taster menu, the first seven courses were as good as we've tasted in many Michelin starred establishments. The Kitchen excelled in in the savoury element of the menu, especially the deep and complex broths accompanying two of the courses. The slightly less successful part, we felt, was the final two sweet courses, there was nothing particularly wrong with them, they just perhaps lacked the wow factor, for example the carrot cake failed to deliver the same depth within the spicing, as the savoury broths had in their development.

The breakfast the following morning was high quality but from my point of view there was a little too much protein in the grill, I would have liked a little more tomato, mushroom & egg, conversely, my Husband thought it perfect, every item however, was cooked to perfection. There were some delightful breakfast extras of high quality yoghurt, toast & jams and an innovative fine cut fruit preparation as a starter.

All in all, we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay, with top notch food and excellent staff, one or two tiny amendments in the rooms would make for a perfect experience and I would thoroughly recommend this establishment to others like myself who enjoy quality food and quality surroundings.

A gastro way to celebrate a special birthday. The nine course tasting menu didnt dissapoint. Classic cookery skills without foams and mousses. Came away feeling comfortable - neither bloated nor hungry! Staff were helpful and pleasant without being intrusive. Got it right in all respects.
The 5 wines chosen to go with the tasting menu were OK, but not to the same standard and quite pricey for what they were. Would have been better choosing our own wine.

My wife and I went here for lunch recently and we had a fantastic gastronomic experience. Put it this way, if this restaurant was in the centre of London, it would most certainly have two Michelin stars. Right from the moment we walked in, we were met with complete professionalism, attention to detail and a knowledge and understanding of fine cuisine which is up there with the best.
This great restaurant is run by two brothers, Tommy and James Banks - a local farming family. James runs front of house, which he does with great pride and passion. His approach is very professional, with a very warm and friendly approach. He has a great knowledge of the appropriate wines to match the various courses - and wow, what great wines they have. We had a red and a white, and they were magnificent.....great choices James! Tommy is the head chef, and for someone so young (I'm guessing late 20's to early 30's), he has an amazing passion and a real devotion to exquisite cuisine. Together with his team of excellent chefs, they create some mouth watering dishes. We went for the 9 course taster menu........ I'm still licking my lips. Well done Tommy, a truly amazing meal!..... We most certainly will be back! Neil & Bríd

We had been trying to book a room here for quite some time and when we eventually managed to get a night away - it was well worth the wait. The Black Swan is welcoming on so many fronts - the staff, the beautiful, cosy rooms and the log fire crackling in the hearth made us feel so relaxed and happy. We chose the 9 course Pescetarian tasting menu - and it was the best food we have ever tasted. The Head chef was on hand to explain all the different courses, and the unobtrusive service from the waiting staff was pitched just right. Overall it was an expensive night away, but as a 'once in a while' special treat, it was certainly worth it.
