“It Grows On You”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 30, 2007

Initially, when we first arrived at the hotel (on a business trip), we were quite dissapointed because it looked like a one-star motel and if you're on a business trip, you would expect something more comfortable than this. Entering the room, I must admit I was taken aback by the deco of the room, it was so old-fashioned, but it was spacious (especially if you're staying alone), and the view of the Swan River and the city is fantastic. Previously when I came to Perth I stayed in the city, so staying in Metro Hotel, which is located in a residential area was quite dissapointing for me (although after a while we discovered that it is quite near to Mills Point Road, which has a few good restaurants).

The wireless Internet connection was horrendous, and after we complained a couple of times, the manager finally moved me to a higher floor and the reception was better. Although I did not ask for buffet breakfast (and it was not included in the hotel rate), the staff was kind enough to include it in as well, although the food served everyday was the same.

Overall, I think the hotel is pretty okay, and it is quiet (because it is in residential area). If I have my own transportation I would not mind staying here again, although if they refurbish the room and the lobby it would definitely give the hotel a good impression. That said, this hotel does grow on you (I've been staying here for a week now), and the hotel manager is a really friendly and is willing to help you as much as he can.

  • Liked — The spacious room, the location in a quiet area
  • Disliked — The room deco is old-fashioned and shabby, same breakfast served everyday

From the difficulty in opening the entrance door to a sofa bed that was broken and couldn't be slept on, this hotel maintained a consistently low standard. Staff were extremely unfriendly and their first item of conversation on arrival concerned the room payment rather than polite small talk. Also, when asked how to get to the nearest beach the desk clerk had no idea and didn't offer any suggestions or maps. A great location near the river but an uninspiring hotel!

Never Again
We booked a superior river view room. After 3 tries by reception we were given the so called superior room. The room contained a kingsize bed and 2 "put u up" beds. The room had been booked for 2 adults. So in all it was rather cramped.
There were nasty stains on the carpet and walls some walls had been touched up with paint that didn't match. The front control panel of the TV was missing as were the doors to the TV cabinet. There were dried tea stains down the sides of the bedside cabinet and the sliding door to the balcony was unlockable, dripping bathroom taps, I won't bore you with any more comments just reiterate , NEVER AGAIN!!!!

We have stayed at this hotel every year over the last ten years, we have always found it good value for money, the rooms are clean and have tea/coffee making facilities.

The river side you get great views of the city.

Staff are friendly and make you feel at home.

Great buffet breakfast can be included in the price.

We spent Christmas 1995 there and had a wonderful time.

We stayed for 1 night at Metro Hotel on Canning and after reading the reviews I wasn't expecting too much, so was really pleased with this hotel. Yes, it is an old hotel, but it appears to have been recently refurbished and the bathroom was fine, although the shower is tiny! I liked the dispensers in the bathroom with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the shower and shaving cream, handwash gel and moisturiser over the vanity, the towels were plentiful and water pressure excellent. The bed was comfy and we loved the balcony with views over the river and city, a great spot to chill with a glass of wine.
We didn't try the restaurant or the bar so can't comment, but we did have a swim in the pool, which was refreshing on a hot day! The area round the pool really needs to be updated and I they should also check the day-beds round the pool as I am sure I spotted a red-back spider's web under one!!
The hotel is close to the city and also the restaurant strip of Victoria Park, though I disagree with the hotel's claim that it is within walking distance of King's Park! I would rate this hotel 3 1/2 star and pretty good value for the price!

We arrived at 12.30 to be told that we could not check-in until 2pm. Fair enough, and they did take our luggage.
We were given a room wirh three single beds instead of a double as ordered. Quickly changed.
The walls in our room had been touched up with paint to hide marks rather than repainting the whole wall.
Our fridge was not plugged in so no cold milk for a cup of tea (I'm British!).
The fridge was not stocked up with milk daily (quick trip to reception each day). Everything else was okay. Nothing fancy.
Our bed had a matress that needed replacing a few years ago.
We ate in the restaurant once in the evening - went across the river into town every night after that.
However, we did have a good view onto town from the 4th floor and it was quiet too.
Stay there again? - not if I had a choice.

We booked our accommodation a month prior to attending. We also paid a month prior to attending. We had the receipt and confimation letter to prove this.
Upon arriving at 1.30pm (after driving 3 hours) we were told our room would not be ready till 2.00pm. When trying to check in, they couldn't initally find the booking. Then they didn't believe the confirmation email so they rang the travel agent to confirm it.
We were given a room with three single beds, (when we booked a double), we were meant to be upgraded but this took a debate to get. We were meant to have breakfast included, but after looking into the dining room, we didn't bother debating.
The hotel was obviously furnished in the 1960's and has probably last been cleaned then as well.
The hallways were lined with used beer glasses, and dirty linen. There was a pungent odour which led straight into the room. The 'river view' is pathetic, considering the window is 1 metre square and the swan is kilometres away.
The room had numerous stains of varying shapes and colours, there was inch thick dust on the furniture and there was black mould in the shower recess. We promptly checked out an hour later, and were denied a refund (we had initally booked for 3 nights). We were told that seeing as we paid through an agent, we had to seek the refund from them?????!!!! Have you ever??
I do have photographs, but will not post them yet, as I am sending my complaint to the general manager.
