So you're looking for a short getaway from Addis, don't want to fly north or spend much travel time on the road? Look no further. You want to go to Langano and specifically you want to stay at Sabana Beach resort. The place is great. All bungalows have a view of the lake and are organized in a way that maintains everyones privacy. The food was great besides for the pork chops that were a cut non recognizable by me and certainly not by my vegetarian girlfriend. This must have just been a one off cause everything else I tried during the 3 days was a winner.
The wellness center included in the room rate is to die for. I'm usually not a spa guy but we did this A LOT during our stay there.
A few words of caution: We went to Langano by mini bus that was heading to Awasa from Addis. Be aware that the walk from the main road is a long dusty one. Prepare for that but it will be worth it once you get to the resort. You will also most definitely need a resort van or a local friend you make with a car to drop you off a the nearby town to catch a mini bus back to Addis. If you have a private car, ignore that. Having said that, the place was FANTASTIC for a 3 day 2 night getaway from Addis.

We loved our stay in Sabana Resort - the bungalow was very nice (with view on the lake) and spacious. The bathroom perfect and from the little dehors we could watch all kinds of birds. The food is better than in any other place where we have stayed during our trip in southern Ethiopia. The whole Resort is well maintained and clean. There is a beach and many local people swim in the lake - the spa is lovely and they offered massage great. It was a pleasure to stay in this place.

This was possibly the most modern and beautiful resort I stayed at in Ethiopia. The rooms were really nice, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The wifi conection at the restaurant was fast. The service was good and the food excellent. After so much Ethiopian food for days I was craving for a nice pizza and I wasn´t disappointed! Really nice place.

1st problem: to book a room you need to pay in advance 100% of the room in a small bar of a shopping center (Dembel) in Addis where the woman is totally unfriendly, incompetent and almost non English speaking (she takes 20 minutes to write a receipt and makes it all wrong, then she gets angry with the customers).

The bungalows are nice with mosquito screens (no fan though). the fridge got stuck in maximum cold for no reason, froze my soda drinks and made a lot of noise all night long. There was also a whistling noise all night long from the bathroom water system. The view is nice but quite far from the lake. It is not spectacular at all. The beach is also about a 10 minutes steep walk from the rooms.
The lake water looks much more disgustingly yellow brownish and dirty than I imagined (although it is supposed to be clean). Not many people dare to swim in it. Also, the stones in the lake in the first 5 meters really hurt my feet.

The food at the restaurant is very good but the waiters are not friendly, especially the very tall one. The service at dinner was a pain... (the room service waiter was friendly and professional on the other hand). The breakfast is good but it is hard to get served tea or coffee by disorganized staff.

Room Tip: take a bungalow in the first row (best) or second

SimoneFerrari, Owner at Sabana Beach Resort, responded to this reviewResponded January 15, 2014

Dear guest,
we are sorry for the problems you encountered during your stay at Sabana and we will for sure
look into them in order to correct what is not working as it should.

Your feedback, as well as the feedback from all our other guests, is invaluable in our constant
effort to give our customers the best service possible.

After reading your review there a couple of points however that we feel are not fair and should be explained so that our guests do not get the wrong impression about Sabana.

- Regarding the advance payment 100% is required because in the past many people have made bookings and then did not show up. Due to this common behaviour, we have been forced to take extreme measures to ensure that rooms are not reserved until the last day and then left empty. As we don't have many rooms, this was also necessary to make sure that other guests trying to reserve a room at Sabana have a better chance of finding one.

- Regarding the fridge getting stuck, I am sure you can understand that any equipment is prone to failure at some point and it's not always predictable. We do our best to keep all equipment in the best possible condition and we apologize for the inconvenience. Have you reported the problem to the front desk regarding this issue? I am sure that they would have done their best to solve the problem.

- The beach is a bit far from the rooms yes, but we feel that 10 minutes and quite steep is somewhat exagerated. Sabana was built on a cliff top to have better ventilation, a view of the lake from higher ground which the majority of our customers enjoy very much, and last but not least the better ventilation helps to minimize mosquitos.

- The colour of the lake's water may be strange for some and perhaps look not clean or safe, however the particular colour is the result of various minerals contained in the water, such as Manganese. Also, Langano is a volcanic lake and it's believed that the very presence of these minerals is one of the reasons why it's free of Bilharzia. Having said this, we feel that it's quite unfair to judge Sabana on the basis of the natural environment, which may or may not be to your liking, but certainly not attributable to our service.

- Regarding the restaurant, breakfast and service in general, from our past reviews you can see that the average rating is very high. We understand your comments and we are truly sorry if some members of our staff where not at the level you expected and we will certainly try to improve, but you should also understand that it is quite an accomplishment to have reached the level we are at today, considering the fact that due to Sabana's location, 90% of members of our staff come from from a background of poverty, very little and sometimes no education and certainly not having grown up in the same environment as our esteemed guests. While we do our best to give our customers the best service possible, we also try to invest in the local community in order to improve the standard of living of the people in the area in the best way we can, and I am sure you can appreciate this. For these reasons, it's hard to compare and expect the same professional service you could get in different contexts/locations.

We thank you for staying at Sabana and you can be certain that your feedback will be used very seriously towards improving our service now and in the future.

Just amazing... the service, the food, the place. A bit concern about so many hotels nearby which can lead to a carnivore competition that will decrease the quality of the service.
We loved everything and the massage was one of the best we have had.
We stayed here 7 days in the mood for a quite time out of noise and stress and was the perfect place to do it. I will say you have a perfect location for Yoga Holidays and could use some of your social areas for that. The TV area is specially under used and it can hold movie nights or others.
Also you can offer or recommend a transport service from Addis, as the downside of the trip was the we got ripped off because the price of our transport only included daytime transport, and if the driver was unable to return to Addis before 6 p.m. we were charged extra.
Finally the booking service needs a bit of work, we got different prices from what we book initially with the hotel site, and what we end up paying at the end. Nonetheless the people at the service desk and at Addis found a good solution for those troubles.
Otherwise really a very nice time and for all previous comments the lake is a very safe space to swim.
Thank you and please keep it on.

Room Tip: Try to ask the ones on the second or third row. It gets a bit noisy in the morning on the front rooms.
