“Beautiful, in the wild”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2012

Kangaroo Island isn't hard to reach, take the ferry to Penneshaw and then drive wherever you want! This homestead is located in the central-south part of the island and from there within an hour time all of Flinder's Chase Park, Cape Borda, Little Sahara, Seal bay are accessible. The homestead isn't hard to get to, just look for the signs on the road. During beautiful sunsets, Graeme can let you feed the wild kangaroos. The homestead is confortable inside with 2 single beds, a king size one and a sofa-bed. You can cook your own meals in the kitchen. everything is very clean. Outstanding experience.

Eleanor River Homestead is a big find!! It was one of the highlights of our trip to Australia and we would have stayed much longer if we had known how special it would be. You live in a darling, well-equipped cabin with front porch looking out over the meadows and trees of Kangaroo Island, with Kangaroos on your front lawn. We rented a car in Kingscote and drove there, not sure what to expect. The last 3 km along a fence line caused a little apprehension since we were driving the equivalent of a rollerskate (our English Rose as the car person called it). All of our fears were for naught. We had no difficulty negotiating the drive to the cabin or anywhere on the island, and we did so one day in pouring rain (just one more part of the adventure). It is in an excellent location - central to all the important sightseeing spots, and within a few minutes of Pardana, where you can get groceries, gas, etc. The hosts are wonderful and very responsive to anything you need. We were there in early June, the beginning of winter, and the wood stove was a dream for heat and ambience. The provisions for breakfast were delicious and generous. The wildlife is right there "in your face," and there is a beautiful walk down to a deck and sitting place at the Eleanor River. We simply felt we did not have enough time there to really explore and settle in. Spend at least 3 days, and more if you can, to see all there is to see in such a special place and a wonderful island.

In terms of sightseeing, the Seal Bay park service tour is not to be missed! Don't be cheap and only walk the boardwalk. The tour is great and we were with the guide, only the 2 of us, for over an hour. Saw every behavior imaginable from baby seals nursing and playing to two big bulls fighting. Incredible.

Stay at Eleanor River and stay as long as you can.

Room Tip: this is a cabin with 2 bedrooms. Both are pleasant, but master for adults and the other for kids if...

We were looking for a secluded, peaceful hideaway on beautiful Kangaroo Island. Eleanor River offered everything we were looking for and then some! Wonderful hosts, luxury accommodation, amazing scenery, the opportunity to get up close with wildlife and a well deserved break from our hectic lives!
Highly recommended...... we will definitely be back!!!

We stayed 4 nights at Eleanor River Homestead in February 2012 and this place is really remarkable.
The cottage is very cozy - yet modern and very clean.
The surroundings are just breathtaking with lots of beautiful yacca palms everywhere. It is very central located at the middle of the island with easy access to all attractions - and a charming red bumpy dirt road leads to the place.
We stayed with our two boys and the whole family enjoyed the days driving around the island and the evenings where we fed Genie (the "eagle") and the many kangaroos which the children could handfeed - not to mention all the other animals on the property and the island which was like being in a zoo.
Furthermore the marron experience is worth trying - it's fun netting them but even better eating them - the preparation of these as well as the other seafood is very delicious.
Will definitely recommend this place to anybody enjoying nature & tranquility - and who wishes easy access to main attractions on this amazing island.

We stayed here January 2012 for 3 nights. We are a family of 5. It really is off the beaten track which adds to the uniqueness of this property. I will just start with 1 or 2 negatives. When we arrived Graeme our friendly host greeted us and said if we would like to walk up to the main homestead after 630 pm they feed the kangaroos then and we could join in.
I began to prepare a meal and discovered that the the cutlery in the draw was all greasy and covered in some sauce of sorts...eww. So i decided to rewash it all..but could not find any sort of dish brush or scourer..i rang Graeme asking if we could have one..he put me onto his wife kathy straight away. She said the cleaners are hopeless and no she didn't have any brush or scourer. I said no worries ill make do and pick one up the next day..she didnt seem to mind either way and my request seemed to annoy her.
Anyway we had dinner and walked up to the homestead around 645 pm to see the feeding as Graeme had suggested. When we got there the roos, were there & we stood for a little watching the kangaroos and the dog pacing backwards and forwards..the hosts had thier own guests for dinner and then Kathy while waving a bottle of wine around yells out from her verandah "sorry we have already fed them" you can come back tomorrow. Er okay! Then i think Graeme was a little embarrased so he swiftly came out with some food for us to feed them. I get the impression that having us staying at the cabin was a bit of an inconvenience for Kathy..maybe the hospitality industry isn't her thing! :)
The next day we were able to feed them ourselves as they were going out, they left food and instructions for us and we also got to see the lovely tame kestral bird that has been handreared..Genie..she is very sweet.
The other odd thing was that they never offered the marron experience to us..im guessing that bcos its there holidays in jan they dont want to do it...or cant be bothered. Anyway the final time i saw the hostess was when she cam to the cabin the day we were departing..her words were "have you enjoyed yourself and that the cleaners will be there in literally 10 minutes! literally!"..in other words hurry up and get out. So now the positives.
It is a beautiful spot, sunsets amazing, peaceful. My son loved genie. Each night we would put pieces of fruit on the verandah and watch the possums thru the windows. Some nights the kangaroos would come under the verandah. And we heard the growling male koalas. we filled up the birdbath and saw some wonderful birds come down to bathe including Genie!
We had marron..sooo delicious at the Andermel marron farm..its a must do. As is remarkable rocks and admirals arch and the sea lions. Oh and you must do the birds of prey its an intimate display but only 1 session a day so check the times. 3 nights was just enough time to see this part of the island. We left some improvement suggestions on the fridge for the hosts.I would definately recommend this place.:)

Room Tip: very small rooms, not much space for suitcases and the shower although quaint is quite a leap to cli...

Thank you for your review and for your suggestions.

In respond to your negative points.

Firstly it is unfortunate that you found dirty cutlery and we appreciate being informed of such occurrences. When you contacted us you were advised that we didn't have scourers or brushes and we explained the reason was to protect the non stick surfaces. We also offered to reimburse you for any purchases you made. We dispute your claim that a reference was made about the cleaner.

With regards feeding the kangaroos, Unfortunately there was a miscommunication on our part where one party hadn't advised the other of the arrangement made with you and upon your arrival at the Homestead Kathy politely advised you that the kangaroos had already been fed and if you wished you could come back tomorrow. While you were still observing the kangaroos Graeme realised what had transpired and provided you with some roo food.

We do take exception to the reference of Kathy "waving a bottle of wine" and will leave readers to judge Kathy's hospitality skills via all other reviews.

With regards offering the Marron Experience... In our Information Pack, that is forwarded to all bookings, it clearly states that you are to communicate with us prior to your arrival for information about the experience. The information pack also states that check out time is strictly 10:30 am. On the morning of your departure we called by as we were leaving at 10:40 am and Kathy, while asking you whether you had enjoyed yourself, also politely advised you that the cleaner will be there in 10 minutes.

I trust that the negative experience you had was outweighed by the positive and thank you for recommending us.

We chose the location because it was central and a friend had recommended it.

It's about a 10min drive from the mainroad, no street lights, slightly bumpy ride, but it leads you to your own private bungalow and open space. no fences so you in the early mornings you may see kangaroos and other wildlife just metres away from your porch.

there's a friendly dog (belonging to the owners) which comes by to say hi every now and then.

if you want space to yourself, peace and quiet, and contact with wildlife... this is the place to be!

i would come back here anytime!

Room Tip: there are 2 bedrooms and in the living room there's a sofa bed.

we couldnt have imaginied staying anywhere else. The peaceful location just you and the wild life. Sitting on the deck watching the sun go down. Located in the heart of KI it was the perfect place to stay to visit the entire island. The cabin was spacious, very clean and fully equipped with top end finishes. The fire provided more then enough heat. Cant wait to return. Thanks graham & kathy
