“Gorgeous cottage in a beautiful area, swimming in the lake every day!”
Reviewed September 9, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We stayed at Cottage in Correze for a few nights with some friends at the end of July/early Aug 2013. We went by train – Eurostar to Paris, Paris to Limoges (about 3 hours), then Limoges to Bugeat (1.5 hours). Really easy, couple of changes, but a nice relaxed way to travel. The journey between Limoges and Bugeat is really pretty. Stopped off at Paris for a few hours on the way back, nice way to break up the journey.

The cottage is lovely – full of character with stone walls, shutters etc, in a little hamlet with about 5 or 6 other houses, including a really helpful English couple who live across the road (they help look after the cottage and were happy to give advice). There’s no facilities in the little hamlet, but you can walk into the local town Bugeat, where there is a coffee shop, and other shops and a restaurant. Looks like a nice little town, but we only had time for a coffee as we were too busy doing other stuff.

The main cottage is plenty big enough for 4, and with the separate barn you can sleep another 4, although this is more open plan rather than in a separate bedroom. We put the teenage boys in there, so they could stay up late and watch telly without disturbing us! It has its own bathroom, so they are pretty self contained (lucky for them and us!). It’s a separate building, but only about 3m away.

Downstairs the main cottage has a great kitchen with everything you’d need, large dining table and sofas/TV/wood burning stove etc. There’s also a bathroom with a nice big shower. Upstairs there’s a double and a twin – both big rooms. All the décor is done to a pretty high spec – and it seems to be fairly recently done, so it’s all in good condition.

You may see that the cottage is close by the single track railway – but don’t worry, there are about 6 single-carriage trains a day, so they certainly do not disturb you at all! There’s a little garden where you can soak up the rays of sun, a lovely place to unwind with a beer at the end of the day. There’s loads of walking and cycling in the areas around, we did a few short walks from the cottage, but there’s loads more around the whole area, which is gorgeous. It’s very green, quiet and seems undiscovered compared to other places we’ve visited, but there’s other stuff if the countryside is not your thing.

We went out every day – and most days ended up at one of the lakes for a swim. Weather was gorgeous so it was great to relax in the water. The nearest lake is only a 5 minute drive, which is a nice simple lake with a few facilities. There are other lakes around which are busier and have more going on – even one with a ‘beach bar’ serving snacks and beer etc.
While we were there we went to some roman ruins, a couple of market towns, drank good coffee, nice wine, ate lovely food (really nice pizza restaurant in Egleton) and just relaxed – had a lovely time. We were only there for a few days but it was so relaxing – thoroughly recommended. I would say this is a great place for people who like character towns and villages, beautiful countryside, and not too many tourists! Great place.
