This is a small trattoria in the town of San Rocco, Marano di Valpolicella, in the heart of Italian winemaking region Valpolicella. The drive to get here is spectacularly beautiful. We went here for lunch after visiting the beautiful and popular waterfall park, Parco delle Cascate di Molino (http://www.parcodellecascate.it/indexeng.php), where you won't find many foreign tourists.
Antica Osteria della Valpolicella has the feel of a neighborhood institution, with a mix of the casual and the formal that is charming and memorable. Nice people, but absolutely unbelievable food and wine. They get truffles from the hillsides nearby, they serve wine made within a kilometer or two, and they offer a dessert, cremaccia con amaretto, that will nearly kill you with richness and flavor. I believe we moaned through the whole meal. When I told the waiter that everything was "stupendo," he just laughed. I guess he figures everyone eats this well. It was, for us, one of the top 5 meals we've had anywhere.
Don't expect much in terms of ambiance, except the feeling of being in an authentic Italian temple of food. There's a vista point across the street, and the drive to San Rocco is beautiful. But the place is unremarkable until you put the first forkful in your mouth. . .
