“Excellent food”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Excellent food, the staff were all friendly and very helpful. Had been allocated a double but I had requested twin when booking. Even thought they were full they managed to move things round so that we got a twin. Thank Goodness they did as my husband developed a nasty cold and spent the night coughing, sneezing ans sweating. We had a meal in the restaurant and it was absolutely superb. I strongly recommend the rump of lamb :-D
A little bit of titivating is needed to bring it up to excellent; but this is a problem in many independent hotels at the moment.

We stayed here on a KGB deal so had good value for money. That being said the room and bathroom were very tired and on first entering the room noticed one of the twin beds was broken. We were offered another room but decided to stay put with a different bed. The bathroom is in a dreadful state and quite frankly would not use it to have a bath. The central heating was not very good and on asking for some extra bedding we were given blankets which were really not fit to be used. The dinner was really good and the waitress lovely and friendly.
We would love to see the house being properly taken care of, its such a shame to see a beautiful building being let go like this. If some of the rooms have been decorated I am not sure why, when only a handful of guests were staying there we were given the old rooms. Obviously we would have given a better review.

Unfortunately this was not a great experience. The hotel looked great from the outside and the entrance hall was really lovely. We thought we were in for a good two night stay. Unfortunately we were mistaken. We arrived and were greeted (by a lovely receptionist) to be told that the restaurant was closed - no notice and we had booked a deal which included dinner that night. We thought this was exceptionally poor. It was a Sunday evening and we had travelled a distance – the last thing we really wanted to do was go out. The pub had stopped serving food but fortunately there was a restaurant in the village (good, but very expensive).

Our room was large (good bathroom), but the carpet was stained and there were water marks on the walls and ceiling. The corridor leading up to the room was very cold – as was the bar (when we sat for our meal on our second night we had to have an electric fire to keep warm). There was an open fire in the bar area (advertised on their web site) but we were told it couldn’t be lit because they didn’t have a guard for it. The bar was good, but the area was extremely dark and poorly lit (not atmospheric!). The coffee machine was broken (and not fixed over the three days we were there).

Breakfast on our first morning (the night after the kitchens were closed) was terrible – food dry and hard (obviously left over from previous days and reheated). Our meal on the second evening ok without being special. Second breakfast was fine.

The staff in the hotel were, on the whole, really helpful and pleasant (and apologetic) and saved our stay from being even worse. We were on a deal which, to be fair, made our stay very reasonable - however, we would rather have paid more and had a better stay elsewhere. Overall it was cold and lacked atmosphere (hardly any other guests). The hotels web site talks about elegance and charm. Sorry, but on this occasion we found rather the opposite.

This is a nice comfortable hotel, the staff at the hotel are so nice and go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. Our room was nice and clean with everything you would expect but maybe the bathroom a little tired and would benefit from a touch of paint.

I would definitely stay here again, the staff really make you feel welcome. The hotel building itself is very appealing from the outside with some fabulous features inside.

This review will agree with most of the previous ones. It is a good place to stay on a deal, but would hate to pay the original quoted price. The location is good if you wish to stay near Bedford.
The rooms are large and well appointed. The stated problems with very low lighting (except in the bathroom) and trying to get a shower to work still hold.

The 2 course set menu was fine but with a limited choice. Did not stay for other dinners as we could never see a menu.

Breakfast was a bit limited but well cooked.

The staff were all friendly and helpful, but some seemed lacking in knowledge.

Room Tip: Rooms 23 and 4 had problems with the shower

KGB deal for 4 of us last weekend. Two better than average rooms both with pleasant sitting area. The dining room was busy but comfortable and with plenty of space, and the food and service were good. The staff were friendly and considerate. Star lost because although both bathrooms were spacious and with plenty of hot water etc, the showers over the bath were both very difficult to control as far as the temperature was concerned and apparently this was down to old plumbing. It did not detract from a very enjoyable stay and I would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly.

Room Tip: we had rooms 22 and 23... both good.
