You'll need a car to get here but if you're touring Crete or just want a few days away from the hordes of tourists - here's your answer. It almost defined the Cretan tradition of hospitality. fantastic views, good food, lovely local produce which they sell & make their menu from. Free parking and some unusual excursions - if you're their at the right time. How about a guided moonlight walk to the summit of the local mountain on the next full moon - not my thing, but you don't get that offered by Shazza & Wayne spotty reps for 'suntours' do you? There is also a great feel in the village. Mel (I think that was what she called herself) will come out of her little cafe & show you the incredible frescoes in the 14th Cent chapel for free (couple of euros in the offering box is welcome but better than Knossos in my opinion) & then serve you Greek coffee, homemade cheese & sweet bread (like brioche) in the cafe. She'll probably try to sell you embroidery, olive oil, honey or any number of local produce too - but there's no problem saying no.
Fabulous place.
