“lovely old inn ,picturesque village”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

We stayed for 1 night in July. This was a lovely old inn with loads of character and an excellent restaurant. We stayed in a room overlooking the beer garden and yes it was as little noisy but was understandable seeing as it was a lovely summers evening. However, saying that,it was only general chat that you could hear and nothing too excessive and as the owner previously mentioned it was quiet by 10pm.

The room was fine, the only criticism was the bathroomThis was a little annoying because even though there was a hand held shower in the bath, there was no shower curtain/screen which resulted in a very wet floor! We would have preferred a shower in the room even at the expense of losing the bath.

Moan over, everything else was fab! Lovely staff, excellent food in the restaurant(advisable to book) and an equally good breakfast. We sat in the walled garden for breakfast and it was so peaceful and relaxing we didnt want to leave!

Will definately visit again, maybe in the winter, and thankyou to everyone at the George for a lovely stay

Room was terrible! The bed frame banged the wall on every movement on the bed, the bed was the most uncomfortable place I've slept I've gotten more sleep on a sleeping bag on the floor in a tent. Our room backed onto the beer garden so we might as well have had everyone in our room with the amount of conversations we could clearly hear. The bathroom netting on window was dirty along with paint peeling of the walls. Are lamps had dents in and the side draw cabinets nob was in the draw. You can hear every tiny bit of noise of people walking around and in the rooms next door. Breakfast wasn't any good either toast came as not toast but basically a tad hard from being in the toaster for 5 seconds, made a cup of tea to find it tasted like washing up liquid. I did ask for another room & when said they didn't have any I said I'd rather leave was told I'd have to pay £85 for which the room was costing us.. What a joke! Then have just looked on website to see there doing better rooms for cheaper prices.. That's topped it all off. I'd advise not to stay here and pick somewhere else! Should be pleasant to hand over your hard earned money for a pleasant stay and well needed get away instead it was the complete opposite.

Thank you for taking the time to review the George at Nunney. We are of course very disappointed to hear you comments, as we as new owners since April 2012 have invested a huge amount of money into the refurbishment of the bar, restaurant, and rooms and 98% of our reviews are very positive because of this.

I have spoken to the manager on duty the night you stayed (Saturday 10th August) and she informed me you did come down to complain at 8.30 pm that the noise from our beer garden was too loud. It was a warm night, and as always at weekends we are fully booked in our restaurant and rooms which means many customers spend time in our night lit walled garden, which your room looked over. That night, by 10am the garden was empty however and there would have been no noise.

Our manager on duty did suggest closing the window if the noise cause an issue, as we do provide fans to keep cool, but to be honest most guests do not retire to bed at 8.30pm so this has never been an issue before. We are fully booked every night both in our restaurant and hotel, and this was the first complaint about noise in the garden in 14 months. As such she had no option but to ask for the £85 room fee, as we could have sold that room many times otherwise.

I am sure you had a good night sleep after the pub died down at 10am, as you said nothing about sleep the next morning. when I checked you out the following morning, and noted you had left your scrambled eggs. I asked if everything was ok with your breakfast for that reason, and you said only that the scrambled eggs were soft, and not what you were used too.

I did explain that most customers prefer properly cooked (soft) scrambled eggs but you seemed to imply you had only ever eaten over cooked scrambled eggs, most likely from a buffet. We cook everything to order at The George, and for that reason it maybe not what you were used too. Given we have had no complaints about our breakfast previously, I have to conclude you have maybe previously you have been to large hotels with a help yourself buffet, where the scrambled eggs are put in a hot plate and served over cooked.

We served 25 people that morning and no one else left anything on there breakfast plate. That was why I asked you if there was a problem with your breakfast.

We are very sorry you did not have a good experience at The George, especially as almost all our reviews are so positive. We would love an opportunity for you to visit again, maybe not mid summer so there is not so much noise from our beer garden and we can certainly cook your scrambled eggs for longer!

We stayed at this beautiful place for one night and were really pleased. We only stayed for a night And were made to feel so welcome by everyone. We stayed in room 8 and it was very clean & comfortable. Lovely oldie worldwide place with a huge amount of character. Would most definitely stay again.

Nunney is a beautiful village, however we were disappointed with our room at The George. The website certainly shows the rooms at their best. Our room was in need of some attention, however. There was damage to the door frame which did not add to any rustic charm and a wooden shelf in the en suite had suffered from water damage and was unappealing. Both of these could have easily been repaired. Our night's sleep was also disturbed by the occupants above us as every step and flush of the toilet could be heard. We were further disappointed that despite the claim that wifi was 'available in all areas' we could not access this in our room nor in the restaurant! We were told that it was a bit patchy. The service in the restaurant was slow and required several prompts. Would love to visit Nunney again, but not to stay.

Beautiful hotel, set in a small quaint village with a lovely walled sheltered garden with comfy sofas. Restaurant served really nice food at reasonable prices. Some rooms are still to be decorated but still lovely. Family owned and run with that personal touch. Very friendly with nothing too much trouble. We used it as a base to visit Longleat nearby. Will definitely return.

I booked at the George for two nights when we were visiting Longleat for the day. I have to say from the moment we arrived to when we left the staff couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful. One particular member of staff even had the foresight to book us a table for dinner as they knew the restaurant was getting booked up. The pub was tastefully decorated with quaint snug rooms for relaxing at the bar, there was a beautiful beer garden, which was perfect as the weather was very warm. It was very nice to be able to have breakfast in the garden aswell. The food at the George was extremely good and good value for money! Our bedroom was overlooking the medieval Castle which was a great novelty. There was a fan provided which we were very grateful for and It was nice to have our room cleaned and the tea tray refilled after our first night! I would highly recommend The George, especially good position if your visiting Longleat or Bath.

From the outside The George is lovely in a very pretty village with views of a castle and on a river. Inside it has been modernised and lacks the same charm. Generic hotel chairs and animal skin style rugs were a disappointment. The food was good but we nearly missed out due to our request for a table being missed when we booked our room. The room itself was fine. The floors creak a little but its an old building so that should come as no surprise. The initial welcome was less than inspiring but I guess staff at the end of their shift can be a bit tired and grumpy sometimes. The evening service was good and its a nice atmosphere but it is definitely a restaurant rather than a pub these days.

Room Tip: Our room at the back could have been noisy on a sunnier evening due to the beer garden
