The George at Nunney
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Nunney
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We chose to stay at the civilized George as it was a convenient distance from Frome, where we were visiting. It is located in a lovely Somerset village, very close to the substantial remains of Nunney Castle. We evidently chose well as we could find no fault with the George.

The George is very tastefully decorated and furnished, in a contemporary style, and has a most agreeable ambience. Our room was very clean, quiet, comfortable and nicely furnished.

Their menu featured imaginative, modern European cuisine. Our meals were of good quality being well cooked and presented. They were absolutely delicious and good value for money. Breakfasts were substantial and very good too. Their real ales were kept immaculately and there was a good choice of malt whiskys too. There was even a draught scrumpy. Proper job!

We were most impressed with the high level of service with owners and hard working staff being friendly and most helpful. As a measure of the service, we noticed that a lamp bulb had failed in the ceiling of our bedroom and it had indeed been replaced by the time we returned to our room, later in the day.

The George sets standards for others to follow; the owners have clearly put a lot of thought and effort into making it a great success, with attention to detail evident. it is what a pub really should be. That is why we have given it such a high rating.and our ringing endorsement.

Booked two nights at the last minute to visit the area for the first time with my 13 year old daughter. Wasn't disappointed. The George is based in a lovely quaint village away from the usual hustle and bustle. And a great base for day trips to Longleat (drive through the monkey area at your own peril!) and Bath (recommend the Cross Bath even in freezing weather). Both breakfast and evening meal was great - even for a fussy teenager - and the plus for the freezing weather was sitting next to the wood burner getting nice and toasty. Our room was clean and comfortable and great value for money. Everyone was really friendly and helpful and I would definitely recommend the George if you are looking for a base to explore the local area.

This is going to be quite a long review but my partner and I just had to say what a fantastic stay we had...

We've just come back this weekend after staying at The George in Nunney and felt we had to leave a review straight away to explain what a fantastic stay we had. Ok, so it was only for one night (we stayed on the 15/02/13) but the service we received was just absolutely brilliant!
We found the hotel with no problems and the moment we stepped in we both loved the decor and the feel of the hotel! The staff were very friendly on our arrival, checking we had everything we needed and kindly showed us to our room rather than just direct us to it! Walking into the room (we had booked the Trafalgar room) it was spacious, clean and tidy and even had a lovely view of the castle. The bathroom was also clean and tidy and, again very spacious.
We went for a drink in the bar before getting ready for our evening meal and the bar area was just lovely. There were sofas and comfy seats with a lovely wood burning stove and the decor just matched the feel of the hotel. The staff, again were very friendly and would do anything to make sure you enjoyed your stay...even going as far as getting a dark towel for me! I had coloured my hair the night before our arrival and had a strange request of a dark towel so I didn't get purple dye on the white towels. This wasn't a problem at all and after a couple of phone calls a member of staff told us if we went and got ready for the evening she would bring one up, which she did!
Heading down for our evening meal (you need to book a table but the website gives you the facility to do this) we had a drink in the bar and looked over the menu choices. My partner and I chose the steaks (I had the sirloin and my partner had the rib eye.) We were then directed to our table and within minutes our food was served. The steaks...wow! They were beautifully cooked and everything on the plate was piping hot. The staff were brilliant asking if everything was ok but not bothering us too much and letting us enjoy our evening. Naturally, we also had dessert! I only had a cheesecake (which was gorgeous) but my partner had the lemon meringue pie, which again came out hot and fresh!
The nights stay was peaceful. The bed was nice and comfy...my partner and I slept like logs! Finally, the breakfast was all freshly cooked. The member of staff on that morning was attentive, nice and friendly. There was a good choice of cereal, fresh fruit and yoghurt with a selection of fruit juices but you also had the choice of a full English. Me, being fussy didn't like some of the stuff on the full English but the member of staff said I could pick and choose what I wanted. This set us up nicely for our day trip to Longleat, which is only 20 minutes away from the hotel.
Thank you The George for a lovely stay. We will definitely be visiting again :o)

Booked a table for my wife's and I for Sunday lunch and found both the food choice and quality excellent. The interior has a really nice feel to it with exposed walls matched against modern tables and chairs and we were given a window table overlooking the castle and next to a warming wood burning stove. We both chose the Sunday roasts, it was nice to see roast duck on the menu as a choice served with a selection of fresh veg, all was delightful. If I was picky the only faults we could find we're that we were not offered a wine list and our young waiter was a little over zealous on clearing our plates, only minor faults but who wants to rush when in such nice surroundings. Will definitely return and be recommending to our friends.

A great place to base from when visiting the area, whether on business or pleasure. Rooms are well sized and furnished. The restaurant is very good and always a good selection of specials as well as a very pleasing menu. Decor is great and I can't wait till the summer to enjoy the new outside area.

Wonderful village and pub. Spent one night here in early December. Pub was very welcoming and we loved its setting within the historic village. Nunney is a super place to explore with romantic castle ruins and a fine tea room, as well as the excellent George. Room was clean and of a good size. Our only complaint was that it sat above the breakfast room which was being used as a function room that night. Very noisy ! A room to the front of the pub might be a better choice with hindsight. Our evening meal was faultless (despite being extremely busy) and the staff worked really well under pressure. Breakfast was also very well done and good value. An atmospheric country inn that deserves to do well.
