maalu maalu was a fantastic place to stay. the staff were very friendly and welcomed us immediately. The cottages were well kept and were very spacious. They were great rooms with great views. The food was fabulous and the chefs were very friendly to talk to. It was a quiet and relaxing place to stay and we loved the walks on the beach. I would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone who wants some peace and quiet with excellent service, food and views!

We stayed just under a week and this hotel was really excellent. The thatched rooms have great balconies, comfortable beds, large bathrooms and sea views. There's a nice pool that's well lit at night and a sandy, clean beach. Breakfast was a good buffet. We ate lunch everyday in the beach-side restaurant (jumbo prawns and beer). Dinner is a buffet where the food is fine, but nothing special. The hotel staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. For one of the nights we got upgraded to a suite with a steam room and plunge pool and were also offered a free candle-lit dinner on the deck, which was excellent. We walked the length of the beach, looked at and ate in other places and there's nowhere else that comes close to this. However, the sea here is shallow a long way out (worth knowing if you've got a choice of other beach resorts). This is also a resort and if this isn't your thing, best to go to another part of the island in search of beaches.

Set in a bay on the east coast, one couldn't imagine a more beautiful setting. Warm Indian Ocean lapping the totally uncrowded sandy beach.
The hotel itself consists of a number of palm-thatched cottages which are very comfotable and spacious. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and the food was pretty good.
One or two things to note: whilst Maalu Maalu has an impeccably clean beach, about 6 new hotels are currently under construction in the bay and there seems little incentive to clean up the beaches infront. Also the Spa is rather disappointing, set above the reception area making it noisy and unrelaxing.
With any luck this area will be spared further development, but who knows.

Room Tip: As near the beach as possible

After a 'pre-season' Tour of Sri Lanka, we stayed 7 nights in this wonderful resort in half-board ...
This resort is three years old and the first one constructed after the end of 'war'.
Minor potential improvements were communicated to the management but if I could, I would give SIX POINTS at least.
Management training policy is exceptionally good and performant with numerous young fellows ready to learn and customer oriented.
Superb welcoming and constant receptionist support all the time.
Room cleaning and preparation twice a day with artistic creativity.
Cleaned beach and swimming pool daily.
Immediate technician support on request.
Exceptional Spa Quality. Only manicure/pedicure missing.
Breakfast and Diner Buffet are diversified and each day different with an extended selection of drinks and wines.
For sure we will come back as we still have a part of Sri Lanka to visit ;-)
To the WHOLE TEAM, Thank You again so much as we felt YOUR hospitality as being welcomed home by family members ...

Only a two day stay whilst touring Sri Lanka but just superb from the welcome, efficiency of all the staff, to the sad farewell.

The contemporary minimalist rooms with huge suite bathroom and shower are wonderfully expansive, the toiletries and towels supplied luxurious and the most comfortable bed in Sri Lanka.

The sea was warm, the pool perfect and the buffet breakfasts and dinners out of this world. The boat bar was fun and the beer not overpriced for the captive market.

Particular thanks to Samith for sharing the love of his country and encylopaedic knowledge of Sri Lankan cricket. What a star, but then from chefs and waiters to room boys they all were.

Room Tip: Hire a tuktuk (through reception) for an hour or two and visit the friendly local village to meet S...

Even though the price is too high, this place is the true value for the money. You will forget everything about the daily routine. You can always enjoy the warm, salty and cheerful sea breeze, and can enjoy the spicy sea food. What else do you want????

Room Tip: There will be a slight delay when checkin. It s better if you can give a call about one hour before...
