Review of Swallow's Nest

Swallow's Nest
Reviewed October 21, 2012

This is a repro. of the original and seems a bit smaller than the original might have been, but it is worth the visit for the view.

Very picturesque building, built in 1911, in the style of a medieval castle, overhanging the sea, perched on a cliff top. Most visitors view the building from a distant observation platform, but if you have the time, it's worth spending 30 or40 minutes walking the path to get an up-close view. There are spectacular views along the coast and an opportunity to see the buildings details, though as it's privately owned, it wasn't possible to see the interior when we were there. The path requires a little stamina, about 350 steps down and 150 steps up to get there and of course you've got the reverse on the way back. I'm 65 years old and not particularly fit, but I made it without much difficulty, there's seating spots and the occasional small snack bar along the way if you feel the need. At the building, there's a higher viewing platform, worth the few steps to get a different perspective. After taking the trek back to the road, we had a 30 Hryvnia (about $4) cup of coffee in a nice glass walled restaurant overlooking the area.

Very impressive location on the cliff top but one not as much to see as in some of the other palaces in Yalta

The best in Yalta, in my precarious advice, is the frontsea. Next probably is this small castle. Really in a 15' drive distance, but difficult to arrive, we need the police, very gentle , driving in front of us for 10'. I don't visit the inside...we took several beautiful pictures from the cliffs... Nice skyline to keep in the memory long time.

There are not so many attractions that you have to visit while spending time in Yalta. This is definetely one of them. You can reach this by boat from the city centre or by minibus called маршрутка. I reccomend in this special case this first means of transport. Take your own alcohol onboard and relax sailing to Swallow's Nest. Buy a ticket that you will be able to spend 1 hour over there. This is enough. Views are nice and this decorative castle charming.
Be aware that alsmost everywhere in Yalta you will have big probles if you don't know basic Russian:)
