“Rustic charm, inside knowledge and a warm welcome”
Reviewed September 21, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

It must have been quite a gamble, but Pippa Curtis has created a characterful apartment that is entirely in keeping with the traditional farmhouse it occupies, and with all the necessary facilities. She and daughter Becky are fabulous hosts and have deep knowledge of the famous skiing, mountain biking, hiking and climbing that makes Briançon such a draw, and much of the cultural history too. She pointed my at the wondeful Vallée de la Clarée and even left a copy of Emilie Carles' book A Wild Herb Soup by my bed! There was also a basket of local goodies to get us started. Snowgums and Pippa really made our visit.

“Something Special”
Reviewed September 15, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Our trip across France to Briancon came in a "perfect storm" - the start of French school holidays, a massive snowfall, frozen tollway gates and closed motorways resulting in a three hour trip taking eleven hours! Once we finally arrived exhausted sometime after midnight, Pippa popped out and greeted us cheerfully like long-lost friends. This travel-weary Aussie family felt instantly comforted and at home!

Waiting for us in our comfortable apartment were lots of essentials and treats. During our five week stay Pippa and Becky helped us with every request to the utmost degree and showed us things, places and events that only a local would know about. "Chine" the dog and "Luc" the cat (named after a famous local skier) were lively company, especially for our kids missing their pets in Australia.

Snowgums is much more than one of those "luxe", corporatised, impersonal ski "condos" so common these days. It is a house with a living history still being written today. We came to Briancon - Serre Chevalier as skiers but also as lovers of history, literature, architecture and culture. You will find all of these things in the house and its surrounding environments. The house is, as advertised, a converted age-old farmhouse with all of the appealing eccentricities you would expect from such a building. It is certainly the most memorable alpine house I have ever stayed in.

Pippa and Becky are lovely people and excellent hosts. This kind of place is about love, not money. You can't pay for that.

We really enjoyed sharing our home, Snowgums, and this very special part of the world with you. It was very warming to hear that when asked by friends what was your favourite place in Europe, that you said it was your stay with us in Briancon that came to mind. We hope to see you, and/or your girls, back here another time. Cheers

“Rustic charm in the high alps”
Reviewed April 3, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Our family of four spent five weeks in the downstairs apartment of Pippa's in Feb/March and were able to settle in and make ourselves at home with everything we needed in the two rooms. Pippa was a fabulous host, welcoming us warmly at midnight despite the hour and giving us a wonderful hamper which introduced us to the delights of the local produce: wine, patés, cheese, bread etc.
Pippa also gave us many great tips for local daytrips, overnight walks, and good restaurants. She was also a wonderful guide, taking us to a nice restaurant up a valley opposite a tobogganing slope, which the kids loved, and also a fabulous cross country skiing festival complete with free husky sled rides! We would never have know about all these things to do if it wasn't for Pippa's local knowledge. Our two girls also enjoyed the company of Pippa's daughter Becky who was generous in sharing her garden, cubby house and games with them. They also loved the company of Becky's dog in the garden and also her friendly cat who would come in the window every day to make himself at home!
We spent a couple of weeks skiing while we were there, catching the regular free bus from a few blocks away to the ski slopes of Chantermerle (which worked well for us) and also driving up to Montgenevre which was only twenty minutes by car. Despite the beautiful warm spring weather, the snow just kept on coming and we enjoyed some wonderful skiing conditions throughout our stay. If we come back to this lovely wild part of France we would certainly come back and stay with Pippa and Becky again. I hope some day we will!

“Welcoming and helpful host”
Reviewed February 24, 2015 for a stay in February 2015

Travelled with the young family for their first week of skiing and Snowgums worked very well for us. Pippa was happy to collect the children after ski school which was hugely helpful - fed, watered and looked after them brilliantly. Apartment 1 had all we needed and Pippa arranged for a meal for our first night which was very helpful. Becky was charming and our boys enjoyed sledging with her. Snowgums is slightly away from the slopes, so we drove (you could use the bus) as we had booked ski school at the other end of the valley. There are closer ones, but we knew this part.
Living in an old house ourselves we appreciated some of the quirky, rustic elements of the building.. Lovingly restored, some work in progress as all buildings like these are.
We were welcomed warmly (even when we arrived v late due to ferry issues!) and Snowgums was perfect for the first family skiing holiday. Thank you Pippa and Becky,

“A hidden gem in Serre Chevalier”
Reviewed February 8, 2015 for a stay in January 2015

We have visited Serre Chevalier many times, but have always struggled to find good accommodation. My husband and I along with our two dogs stayed at Snowgums as guests of Pippa and Becky for two weeks in January. The apartment for the four of us was very spacious and had everything you could possibly want included to enjoy your stay! Pippa even provided a very tasty welcome food and drink pack of local delights. The dogs were made very welcome by Pippa, Becky and their dog Chine and had a lovely stay. Snowgums is a short drive from Briancon town and the lift a Chantemerle. The Serre Chevalier valley is an intermediate skiers paradise (like me). We have already rebooked for next year and look forward to seeing you all again in January 2016.

It was a real pleasure to have this polite, tidy and friendly family stay with us. We loved that the children made the most of our big garden, riding the toy tractors down the slope, and making meals in the Wendy House. We look forward to welcoming you all another time soon, summer or winter. Best wishes
