Residence du Temple
Ranked #10 of 11 Briancon B&B and Inns
Reviewed July 28, 2012

We stayed in a two bedroom apartment at Residence du Temple for one night in June, in the heart of walled Briancon. The master king bed was very comfortable and my kids liked the bunk beds in the second bedroom (although they are essentially in a room the size of a closet - barely room to turn around). The living area and eating area are spacious, with modern, functional furniture and wood floors. Everything is very clean; bathroom is small but functional. Entrance is through the bar, so you have to wait to check in until the bar opens late in the afternoon. If you like Vauban fortresses, Briancon is the town for you. They straddle this valley and are quite imposing. The town itself is charming and small, with a few steep shop and restaurant-lined streets- there are a couple of touristy stores but you can also find local crafts and we enjoyed ourselves with browsing in the late afternoon and dinner on a terrace in one of the restaurants.

France is normally well equipped, and in particular for families with childrens.
This small residence is located in the center of the ancient village of Briancon, and it offers very nice views of the tiny streets and of the Temple, just in front.
The small apartments are fully equipped with all you need and ambients are very well separated.
Cleaning and service are faultless.

Excellent overnight stop on the way from England to Vars leaving us only a one hour drive the following morning to the resort. We had to park in a car park just before the entrance of the old walled town as only residents are allowed to park within the walls (I think!) so bollards block the way in. The car parking was free (Friday night) although we were confused how to get out with no ticket the following morning - you need to press the "talk" button at the exit of the car park and say "English - no ticket - stuck in car park" or something along those lines! They then open the barrier. After a short walk to the residence we were given our keys by Richard straight away and climbed up 3 steep flights of stairs to our apartment. I would say that anyone with walking difficulties would find these stairs hard. The apartment was well decorated and looked good. The double bed was comfy and the pull out in the living room was too. Usual fridge, microwave, kettle etc although we did not use much of the kitchen appliances as we were eating out and only staying for one night. The bathroom could have been a little cleaner behind the door actually on the bath brim itself although this was probably an oversight as the rest of the apartment was great. There was plenty of light and some great blinds. After our meal we went into the "Spirit" bar, which is also "reception" for the apartments, for a drink where there was live music. The bar was very busy and buzzing. We stayed for one drink as we had our 12 year old daughter with us and then retired to the apartment. I did notice the noise from the bar (and we were 3 floors up) but I think that any noise does echo because of the walled town and courtyards below. It did not deter me from sleep (probably too tired from the UK drive) but my daughter said that she kept waking up (once with a dog barking too which I think adds weight to the echo theory). All in all, I enjoyed my stay - and it was great staying within the walled town. We did get a good rate on this apartment 70 euros - I don't think I would have found the full rate good value.

The main memory of our stay here is the loud music coming from the bars downstairs at night. The music was extremely loud and went on until well after midnight. We stayed on a Friday and Saturday night.

The apartment we had was for 6 people although it would be very cramped with 6 people. Good size for 4. It is tastefully decorated and clean.

Location is fine and parking is available within a 5 min walk in an open public carpark.

If planning to ski it is best to drive to the lifts. Italy is very close also.

This is a perfect place for people that: 1) likes to ski but would like also to enjoy the historic ambience of a medieval city; 2) enjoys a guest like Richard, very nice and helpful; 3) have no problems with stairs (yeah, we were on the 3rd floor, and with the luggage this can be complicated, but actually, not much). To summ up: a modern, well equipped hotel in a central location to discovery the Vieux Cité. Residence du Temple is a great value, and was an instrumental part in making our trip to Briançon unforgettable.

We found our appartment to be spacious and well appointed with all the equipment needed to provide for a comfortable stay. The hotel is situated in the very centre of the walled town and handy for bars, restaurants and sight seeing. Breakfast is taken at the bar below the accomodation and is of good standard which together with the helpful and friendly staff made for a pleasant stay. There is some noise from the street at night but this would not deter us from visiting again.

Booked a stay here due to reviews by others, thank you very much!
Excellent accommodation in a perfect location and at a price that
was surprisingly affordable. All of which contributed to making this
the highlight of a five week trip in France. Cannot recommend it highly
enough, this place is a must.
