The title sums it up. The place has a handsome dining room and an extensive a la carte menu, but we ate meat pies in the bar. For almost thirty pounds, two of us had a pint and a half, two pies and some vegetables. They were making an effort: The dishes were nice to look at. But the vegetables were overlooked and both pies were awash in beef gravy -- not so bad for steak and ale pie, but just bizarre with chicken and Stilton. The crust on the pies was fine, but the fillings were nondescript and textureless. The barman was pleasant and solicitous, and I wish I could say nicer things about the food, but for the price it was just not good.
