“Burnt courgettes spoilt this Sunday roast”
Reviewed February 25, 2014

A few Sundays ago I went here with 4 friends. I ordered the roast beef and while the meat. roast potatoes and yorkshire pud the veg left a lot to be desired. We were served a small bowl of veg and were then informed it was to be shared between 2. It's a pity because it is in a great location and a lovely walk from Salisbury but I wont be rushing back here.

“A very pleasant find!”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

Stopped off in the evening on way back to Dorset from Salisbury. A warm and friendly welcome greeted us plus a cheery log fire. Both had good value steak meal. Steak was perfectly cooked to our requested medium-rare and very tender. Desserts were very good too. I had one of the best home-made apple and blackberry crumbles/custard have ever had - and generous helping too. Staff were friendly and efficient. Didn't have to wait long for our food. Will definitely visit again.

We regret you were disappointed in your visit. Our Waiting staff are trained to check on tables during food service, which I'm sure they did to yourselves. So it is a bit disappointing that you did not complain on the day to one of our staff, if everything was as bad as you say, instead of going on to this website.
We could have offered you alternative meals or even a refund so your money would not have been wasted.
As for your comment about owners getting out more, I can assure you we do go out and I can categorically say that there are a lot worse places to eat., However as you have only reviewed two Pubs on Trip Advisor and have found both unsatisfactory you may be eating in the wrong type of establishment for your high standards.

“Not for Cronies”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

A friend has recently moved 15 miles the other side of Salisbury and we were looking for a "halfway" house to meet in regularly. The agreeable landlord allowed us to sample his beers. Disappointingly, both were dark and tasted of caramel. All the tables, (most of which were full of diners) had upright chairs of sit on, and salt and pepper pots on top. Whilst this is clearly a popular pub, its principal function is to serve food rather than please idle chatterers. It's a pity, but I think we will have to find somewhere else to banter.

“Friendly, traditional pub”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

We had a pleasant evening with decent local beer and a menu with a good range of pub classics at reasonable prices, but what marked the P&G out was the genuine unforced kindness and helpfulness of the staff.
