“Dreadful Dirty Hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 5, 2009

I stayed at this hotel in Feb 2009 while exhibiting at the NEC and it was awful.
The Duty Manager visited our room twice after we couldnt get the radiator to switch off and the room was so dusty and stuffy smelling we had the window open all night. He appologised that he didnt' have another room available and we would have to 'make do with this dirty room'. The room was fithy, cobwebs hanging from the window, the dado rail hadn't been dusted for what looked like at least a year. There was snot smeared across the wall, damp on the ceiling in the bathroom all over the shower curtain and soap shoved down the sink?! Rubbish under the bed side tables and the room hadn't seen a hover for a very long time. They found a replacement room for us, which was better, but still wasn't clean and the hotel is in serious need of a reburb, very tired. Would definately not recommend this hotel.

This place was hot, dirty and holding a disco the night we were staying.

They put us in rooms directly above the bar/nightclub with an 18 month old baby. They refused to turn down the music. Eventually moved rooms, the baby woke up, still had to sleep with earplugs in. Got to sleep at past 1 am and had to be up at 5.30am for flight.

People were fighting and vomiting and breaking glass all night.

Really overpriced rooms, food and drink.

Please don't stay here!

We stayed there 30th December. The hotel was nice and very convenient as a stopover destination on a long journey northwards as it is close to the motorway. The restaurant looked OK but we did not eat there as in the evening the restaurant was fully-booked for a coach party. There was food available in the bar but the only bar is styled as a sports bar and is not conducive to a nice meal. There is an Italian restaurant around the corner (to the left as you come out of the hotel) which was pleasant to eat in although we were the only ones in there and food was not anything special.

Considering the size of the hotel it could do with another more "cosy" style pub/bar - although I think at the moment the bar is relying on patrons coming from outside to watch the sports.

We had a swim in the leisure facilities the following day and this was quite nice: quite a big pool as hotel pools go, with a jacuzzi and a small area with gym equipment as well.

Overall though as we only paid £50 (without breakfast) so very good value for money.

Unfortunately, we booked a 'Murder Mystery' evening at the Corus Hotel at a cost o £35.00 per person - a total waste of money!

The event took place in a shabby room and dinner was served at long canteen type tables. The chairs were so close together that it was impossible to get to, or move from your seat without major disruption to two rows of other diners. In an emergency it would have been absolutely impossible to speedily evacuate the room.

Despite a wonderfully descriptive menu (sent prior to the event as the hotel required our choice of menu a month before the event) the meal was just awful - tinned fruit starter - cold vegetables and processed turkey - tinned fruit dessert - and I do mean AWFUL!

Although the 'actors' tried hard, there was absoutely no atmosphere in the soulless, shabby room and the evening was extremely disappointing.

The hotel was average, room clean and fresh towels daily. Bathroom dated and side panel loose on bath
.
The pool area was so disappointing. Could not use during our two night stay as in the times we wanted to use it, it was full of children having swimming lessons. So small it could not really be called a 'swimming' pool. Gym was lacking in equipment and ladies beware as I found to my embarrassment, they allow mums to take boys up to the age of 12 into the female changing room with them!!

We ate at the hotel restaurant on our final night and that was dreadful. The food is a disgrace, tasteless and badly cooked. The staff are all young and in their defence trying to be helpful but poorly trained, especially in the restaurant.

We did speak to the Manager about the restaurant and after being defensive at first and suspecting us of being 'professional complainers', he did begrudgingly apologise and did not charge us for the meal.

The following morning (a Sunday), housekeeping knocked on our door at 8:45am and demanded to know how many more minutes we would be getting out of the room??? My husband was still in the shower so she was sent on her way. Then at breakfast we were pointedly ignored by the staff and my husband had to go up to them and request service. We were glad to get out of there!

We had an early flight from Birmingham and most other hotels had no vacancy at the time we booked, so, despite poor reviews, we ended up at the Corus. It was much better than we had anticipated; we had a large family room (although only paid for a double) which was quiet and clean.

Staff were friendly and helpful and although we didn't eat at the hotel there is an excellent restaurant only 15 minutes drive away (The Forest at Dorridge).

We used the pool/sauna facilities and found them fine. I think the main problems reported relate to the fact that the hotel is a little dated (redecoration work was evident in some parts when we were there.
