“essential campsite, but smart!”
Reviewed August 11, 2012

We stopped at Agama River Camp on the way from Sesriem to Naukluft Mountains, since we couldn't find room in the NWR campsite there.
We had a roof tented 4x4 car and we stayed in the campsite close to the lodge, enjoying the place that seems to be renovating in a smart way. There is a nice little swimming pool, bathrooms are brand new, practical and very nice; places for guests are quite big and plain.
It feels managers are concerned about environment and sustainability: hot water is provided by a wood furnace in the afternoon (then if you need hot water in the morning you are free to put your own wood); there are panels that reminds the area is subjected to scarcity of water, and so on.
If you need to buy anything, it is not far from Solitaire, less than 30 minutes driving.

We stayed for two nights in the exclusive campground at Agama that we paid to have for our "exclusive" use. The site is lovely and located about 6 km from the main lodge. It is well cared for and was very clean. Aside from the two game drive vehicles that passed right beside our camping spot and stopped to let their guests take photos and videos of us eating, we thoroughly enjoyed our first night at the site. The second night was another story. I awoke to someone driving into our campsite in the middle of the night (2 or 3 a.m.). Because it is so remote and accessed by an unlocked gate from the public highway, I had visions of being beaten and robbed like the New Zealand couple earlier in the year. I was terrified and afraid to so much as move. This is Namibia and there have been a number of incidents where tourists are injured or killed. The threat of violence when one is alone is very real.

As soon as it was light enough outside to see what was going on, I peaked out. There was a safari vehicle, along with three tents set up very close to us. The guys with the safari vehicle told us the owners at Agama told them they could camp there for the night. I was very upset. The owners could have at least had the decency to drive out to tell us the night before. The guys camping beside us drove to the lodge to find out why there was a double booking. No reason was given and the owners never apologized. Coupling this experience with what we overheard being said about German guests when we checked in, we both concluded they didn't have the best attitude.

We live in Namibia and take several trips a year where we both camp and stay in lodges. The Agama River Lodge itself would never make it to our list because it is built about 100 meters from the dusty gravel road traveled by all visitors heading to Sossusvlei. The exclusive campsite is beautiful and if you know that it's not exclusive, it is a good choice. I wouldn't stay in the campsite next to the lodge either.

We stayed at Agama River Camp in June 2012. John & his friendly staff greeted us with a warm welcome on a cold night. The rooms are very spacious and very neat. Very tasty home made dinner with warm pudding served. We opted for breakfast parcels because we wanted to view Sossusvlei very early in the morning - very good. Highly recommended.

We stayed for two nights at this lodge, which is situated in a wonderful landscape. The rooms were simply furnished but spacious, clean and comfortable, with wonderful views. The lodge has a small swimming pool sited near the adjoining campsite.

Watching the sunset from the roof terrace made for a splendid evening.

The food was simple, but home cooked and well presented and some of the best we ate in Namibia.

During our stay the owners were not there, but their staff were all very welcoming and efficient. The manager was very knowledgeable about Namibian wildlife and gave us good advice on where to look out for the endangered Mountain zebra.

Monique & staff, THANK YOU for a brilliant stay at your beautiful camp-site. Everything was perfect! The camp-site, staff, toilets, scenery, food & value!
I would recommend this for any tourist or local camper! We already are planning our next visit. The "bad" review you had was either a personal issue or this person has absolutely no idea what it is all about!
Thanks again!!
