This was our 4th holiday in Bequia over a period of 15 years. We go there for the beauty and tranquility of the island - away from the tourist hordes. It was our second stay at Frangi. We stayed in Room 17 - billed as a 'luxury' room. The room is big, clean, comfy bed, efficient A/C, nothing to complain about, other than if you close doors and windows to get the benefit of the A/C it is dark with no windows and poor lighting. The view of Admiralty Bay from the balcony is great and worth the steep climb to the room - tho not for the unfit or infirm. Mosquitos are aplenty. Mosquito coils are provided but don't stop some of the more determined having dinner off you! Frangipani has a great central location. The dining room is at the water's edge and we enjoyed breakfast there for that alone. Food is average, service varies from friendly to indifferent - sadly often the latter, though this is the norm for Bequia. (Firefly was a great exception to this). Friendliness is not a great feature of Bequia but most locals warm up if you try hard - the economy is in poor shape and many are having a hard time. Our main criticism of Frangipani was the high price of the room - there are better deals around but Frangi has the best location. They have cheaper rooms but without A/C, which we like. Don't let any of this put you off - Bequia is a wonderful island, a perfect getaway to chill out. We'll be back as soon as possible!

Just spent one night at the Frangipani, whilst our son was away with his grandparents in St. Vincent. Our welcome was made special by the friendly lady on reception. We got the room next to the roof terrace overlooking the sea.....a wonderful view in the morning. The room is basic, theres no a/c and it has shared bathrooms, but for 55USD you can't complain. Would definately stay here again...beware though the cocktails are vicious.

I reserved one of the original rooms at the Frangipani. Upon my arrival, I was nicely greeted and shown to my upstairs room. My room faced the ocean with views of the bay beyond.

I believe there are 4 original rooms upstairs that share a large balcony (which was outside my room and the room across the hall). The balcony is above the restaurant. The original rooms also share a bathroom.

First the bathrooms: At the end of the hall (away from the ocean), there are 2 separate showers on the left hand side with latch locking doors and 2 toilets on the right with latch locking doors. One sink is located in the middle between the showers and toilets. You can even make you presence aware when you enter by latch locking the swinging door to the entire bathroom area. I never had a problem with the shared bathrooms and I don't think anyone was ever in the bathroom area when I was there. I believe 3 of the 4 rooms were occupied during my stay.

Second the rooms: There is no air conditioning. So you normally have to leave the windows open (at least a little) at night. There are bars on the windows -- so no one's coming in. But I can see it would be a problem if there was a party group on the balcony. I did not notice anyone on the balcony after dark during my stay.

The beds have mosquito nets -- use them and apply bug spray before bedtime. There are no phones or tv, but I did have a wireless intenet connection! Beds were comfortable. Small sink for brushing teeth/shaving. Closet and drawers.

The Thursday night jump up was fun and very filling. Lot's of people the night I was there. The food was very good! Music was loud that night from my room, but the steel pan and the earlier rum put me right to sleep.

It's an easy walk from here to all bars/restaurants on Belmont Walkway. They seem to have a "bar of the night" mind set here. It's the Frangipani on Thursday and then another restaurant the other nights. If you don't go to the correct spot each night, you'll find it very quiet.

It's a long hike from the Walkway to any of the beaches. I hiked back but it's a rugged climb up steep hills. It's best to take a water taxi both ways if you want to go.

I recommend the Friendship Rose for a daysail. Wonderful service/food and great fun!

In summary, I would definitely return to the Frangipani in an original room. But be advised it is not a Holiday Inn nor a Best Western. It's a simple, breezy room on the ocean on a small island in the Caribbean. Take it for what you pay and have fun!

Frangipani's is over rated. Yes its quaint, yes its a lovely location, but the reception you get leaves alot to be desired. I've stayed there a few times - in the original rooms - the rooms are very clean and adequate but the bathrooms are shared. The staff are not at all friendly, they can be really very rude particulary the restaurant staff. Maybe you need to stay in the delux rooms to get a smile in the morning. The food is good but you may have to wait awhile. Thusday night 'Jump Up' can be hit or miss depending on the time of season, Easter Week 'Jump Up' is fun, complete with steel band but out of season it doesn't really happen. The one good thing about Frangi's is the Lime Pie - to die for - but you can call in for it rather than endure an overnight stay.

We just spent 5 lovely nights at the Frangipani. It's a wonderful property in so many ways. Excellent first impressions are critical, and the front desk staff was up to the challenge. Check-in was a breeze, and we were quickly shown our room. We had booked a deluxe garden room and were given #15, which likely had one of the best views, but it was quite a haul, making it up all those stairs - especially while lugging our suitcases. The room itself was terrific - definitely exceeded expectations. It was quite large with lots of floor space, a few chairs and a king-sized bed adorned with fresh flowers. The room had two louvered doors that opened onto a spacious deck with table and chairs, and two chaise lounges. Behind the bedroom area was a huge (HUGE!) dressing area and bathroom, that extended the full width of the room. Closet and drawer space were ample, and having two sinks (one in the bathroom, one in the dressing area) was a big plus. The room also had a safe, mini-fridge, coffee maker and water boiler. A few complimentary beverages were waiting for us in the fridge. The bathroom area was so large, that there was enough space that was screaming for a jacuzzi tub. Too bad they didn't include one in the design. The oversized shower was just fine, but I could see how a yummy tub, maybe incorporating the stone that was used on the walls, would be a great addition.

Great bar at the Frangi with a super bar menu (pages and pages long). Be sure to ask to see the bar menu - lots of yummy options. Not too much selection as far as beer goes, but that was pretty much the way it was, island-wide.

We didn't eat any of our breakfasts at the Frangi, but we did have two dinners there, one of which was the thursday night jump-up BBQ. It was billed as the island party of the week, but it was actually pretty mellow. Nice selection of dishes on the buffet, and the steak was tasty.

The Frangi location was ideal for us - very easy walk into town or along the Belmont walkway with lots of dining choices. If you're motivated, it's even within walking distance of Princess Margaret and Lower Bay beaches. We walked "home" from lower bay on one occasion.

When we return to Bequia, the Frangi will likely be where we'll stay again.

My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon at the Frangipani and it exceeded our expectations in every way!

We intended to stay at the “Fran” after a charter catamaran cruise and at another Inn before the cruise. However, after the other Inn lost our reservations the ladies at the Fran came to the rescue!

The Fran is a picturesque hotel on a rolling hill overlooking the bay. At the waters edge is the Frangipani restaurant and bar which serves delicious food at very reasonable prices. Paths wind up the hill to the rooms giving most rooms great views of the bay. However if you need handicap provisions this may not be the place for you.

The rooms are very clean and spacious. We had fresh flowers on our bed every day and the room was well maintained. All who worked on property and the island for that matter are in credibly friendly, you can truly feel safe. If you are looking for frills and thrills Beqia is NOT the place for you. If you want beauty, relaxation, great people, no clocks, easy going time Bequi IS the place for you.

There are mosquitoes in Bequi… But there is also no other place like it on earth.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
As a home it began, and a home it still seems to the many Bequia lovers who return year after year to the Frangipani, the quintessential small hotel on a small island in the Caribbean. Built for his family by a Bequia sea captain almost a century ago, the shingle-sided, two-storey building has gracefully presided ever since over the nautical comings and goings of Admiralty Harbour. The property has been in the Mitchell family since 1898, first in boat building and now in hospitality. The hotel celebrated its 40th anniversary year in 2007. You can now savour the scene from the open-sided dining room, or the popular beach bar, or from the sundeck upstairs where you can still enjoy one of the original family rooms. The more luxurious garden rooms, which rise on a gentle slope behind, are hand-crafted of local stone and hardwoods, and each has a balcony facing westward over the yacht basin where the setting sun dips down behind the palms. Listed as one of the top 100 bars in the world, the Frangipani's waterfront open air bar is one of the Caribbean's famous watering holes. With an extensive cocktail menu, warm atmosphere and friendly bartenders, the "Frangi" bar maintains its reputation as the meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Try our famous Frangi Fever, Mango Potion or Passion Colada while seated in our love seats under the palms, watching the sun set on the horizon as the gentle breezes blow. Or find a spot at the beautiful purple- heart wooden bar with comfortable cushioned stools and you are likely to meet a fellow Bequia lover from across the planet. Whatever your fancy, you are sure to find good conversation, and a drink of choice at the Frangi; or the bartenders are happy to recommend one of their tropical specialties to while away the hours as you relax and unwind. Every Thursday night, the Frangi Barbecue and Jump Up with live music from the Elite Steel Orchestra maintains its unique attraction. Our superb buffet features a charcoal-grilled 8oz striploin steak or grilled fish, with a wide assortment of local dishes, seafood salads, freshly-baked bread, and fabulous desserts, including our famous Lime Pie, coffee or tea included. ... more   less
