Serenity Beaches Resort
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Uoleva Island
Reviewed January 4, 2010

I recently spent 4 nights at Serenity in between Christmas and New Years.
We flew into Ha'apai and Patti the owner was there to pick us up and take us to the island of Uoleva, which was a stunning boat trip from ha'apai mainland.

I've never relaxed so fast in a place before. This was just what I was after.
The remoteness and beauty combine to create an oasis of bliss.
It is a beautiful spot to unwind; swim, snorkel, practise yoga, kayak, walk, sleep, hammock time, eat, talk, read and re-group with your soul!
The snorkeling is awesome, with some beautiful coral patches & so much life.

The fales are very spacious, light & comfortable, very clean and the beds are great. We slept really well each night. Too much infact!
The owners looked after us wonderfully, we were treated to breakfast, lunch, dinner & baking! It is such bliss to be cooked for, for each meal.
A way to my heart was the awesome range of herbal teas that were available to help yourself at no cost.
I found the cost of the meals very reasonable and inline with what we expected.
There are many small touches that Serenity have implemented that you only appreciate once you leave and go somewhere else. Such as filling up your water bottles with drinking water, rather then charging you to buy another bottle.
All of what they have achieved on such a remote island is certainly a great feat.

My only consideration about going back to Serenity would be how to stay as long as possible next time.
Fabulous, highly recommended

Highly recommended for who is looking for a place what is far away from the civilization, in the middle of the nature where you can just relax, calm down and chill on the beach.

Patti, the owner is a very friendly, full with energy, happiness person. Serenity Beaches Resort has five fales right at the beach front. The brand new fales are clean, tidy and nicely furnished. You have your own privacy, your own beach with huge distance between the fales.

The great thing was that we didn’t feel like a guest, it felt rather like staying with a good friend who did her best for you.

The food was awesome! When we arrived Patti asked us what we prefer to eat in the next five days. I am gluten intolerant. Although there is a huge limitation of food resources on this small island they were still able to cater all my special food requirements.

If Patti is in good mood (she always is) she might play on her guitar at the fire right on the beach.

There were two kayaks we could use any time. You will also find beautiful reef in front of the resort, perfect place for snorkeling.

If you are lucky you might easily catch whales from the beach.

We spend there five gorgeous days in September 2009, wish it would have been longer!!!!

Simple and gorgeous, this perfect place is set another world away from the dusty and rubbish strewn village life of Tonga. With the attentiveness of bed and breakfast owners, Patti and Semi run an exquisite, unique luxury set of individual fales dotted just inside the jungle along the Uolevu island beach. They are warm, thoughtful, kind and welcoming, fantastic cooks & hosts and take care of your every need.

The Fales are beautifully simple pagodas, built and shipped as modules from Bali and assembled on Uolevu, with spare but thoughtful fitouts (this will be your first time showering in your own private jungle space, with your feet on a path of round stones and a stainless steel showerjet extruding out of a tropical tree).

Being on an uninhabited island, the sheer sense of freedom ensures this beats place the hell out of any other resort on Ha'apai. The reef starts 30 meters snorkle from the front of the beach, there are bonfires on the sand with lime coconuts and star filled sky at night, hammocks under palms on the beach and they now have a bar license. It's one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had and you won't be able to leave when you plan to (I stayed twice as long).

Anyway, you should pretty much book a ticket and go there immediately. It is as close to paradise as I have ever encountered.

We initally were planning to stay at Serenity but we didn't stay there due to reading a negative review which in our opinion was totally incorrect. We checked out the resort for ourselves and were very impressed with the warm reception, the lovely clean accommodation and the positive comments made by various holiday makers staying there.
My husband, my 15 year old son and I stayed at another place, a short walk from Serenity called the Captain Cook Hideaway. If you are looking for a much less expensive place to stay right on a quiet, prestine, beautiful beach with variety of delicious meals served every day then you can't beat Captain Cook Hideaway. We extended our stay to nine nights and had the most wonderful and relaxing holiday. Soni and Mele are exceptional Tongan couple who really look after their customers.

The idyllic pristine sandy beaches, great snorkeling, and romantic ambiance of this new and as yet undiscovered treasure of a resort on Uoleva Island in sleepy little Ha'apai will make you feel as if you are on a deserted island. Patti, Semi and the staff are warm and welcoming and go out of their way to ensure your stay there is enjoyable. This is the perfect place to relax, de-stress and forget the day to day pressures back home. I loved every minute of my time there and wished I could have stayed longer.

Fales are new with clean soft beds and full mosquito nets. The layout was well thought out and maintains the almost surreal beauty of the property while allowing for privacy. Only natural light with candles and lanterns at night, but in exchange you will never forget the incredible views of Uoleva's undisturbed night sky. Bring a small flashlight and take advantage of the solar showers provided - they felt great after a long day of snorkeling. Also take advantage of the kayaks provided for the guests to use and get out to explore the crystal clear waters surrounding the resort.

Meals and snacks were generous and delicious comfort food with a Tongan umu feast of roast pig and native dishes one day while I was there and a bonfire at night. There are no stores or shops on the island so be sure to bring any extras that you might want or need.

Serenity beaches has managed to capture the wonderfully unique essence of Ha'apai - it's natural beauty, simplicity and quirky atmosphere. Staying there gave me an opportunity to enjoy the South Pacific just the way I hope it will always remain in those few places not yet overcrowded and consumed with commercialism. This place is unbelievably special it what it has to offer - comfortable raw natural beauty that will engrave itself on your soul.

My husband and I reunited with our two adult daughters and son-in-law (mid 20's in age, and us mid-50s). We stayed one night at Serenity Beaches during our trip and had a wonderful time! We were delivered by Fin n Flukes boat service and the adventure started with landing on a completely secluded beach with stunning views, being pointed in the direction of the resort. Patti met us while we walked the paths to the front of the resort. We were escorted to our two bungalows by Patti, and Sammy was busy raking the sands by our bungalow. He joined in our tour of our accommodations.

Layout: The bungalows were well set up with a main bedroom equipped with a bed, chairs, tables, shelving and a bed above in the loft area accessed by a ladder, room for 4. A door at the back leads to an outdoor toilet, sink and wonderful shower set in a tree with paved black smooth rocks as the flooring. The front had a porch with table and chairs with great views of the ocean. The room had bamboo sides that you can raise to leave the whole hut fully open or you can close it off depending on your preference. The 3 huts are spaced well away from each other to provide great privacy. The bed was comfortable with great island style linens. There is no electricity that leads to the romance of the location. Lanterns are given and do bring a flashlight to assist. Hammocks are nicely located throughout the resort and they are very comfortable with great views from each. The resort covers both sides of the small island and one side are the bungalows and the other side is the main area with a large octogon wooden structure that fits as the dining room/lounge public area. We were welcome to lounge there during the day to get out of the sun. Another small octogon building filled with pillows also was a great spot we sat in for our own picnic lunch. There was another setting with a long wooden table and chairs outdoors on the beach to watch the sunset. There are trails cut all through the lush wooded areas between the main area and bungalows that are fun to walk through. They have two small bungalows without bathrooms near the front area and they have a common shared bathroom.

Activities: We quickly changed to swim suits and headed for the beach opposite our bungalows (near the main buildings) and walked up a distance to snorkle right off the beach. There were only 5 people we saw the whole time on the beach that afternoon, one other couple from Italy staying at the resort and 3 guys from Eastern Europe staying at another site up the beach. The water was pristine and extremely clear. The fish were numerous, the coral beautiful and healthy. The sand was soft and natural. We then went back to the main building to visit with Sammy and Patti who had asked if we wanted coffee, drinks, and they had a platter of fresh cold watermelon for us. We then had a late picnic lunch we had packed at the next smaller hut and my son-in-law hacked off the top of a couple coconuts to mix rum with the coconut water. Sammy provided the machette. We then were invited to watch Sammy and another gentleman set up an umu dinner for us. Sammy carefully had wrapped taro leaves into packages filled with fish, chicken and root crops for our dinner. They had an underground fire/coals that they used for the oven to cook our dinner and covered it with palm leaves, dirt and left if to simmer for a couple hours. We showered and lounged in hammocks, visited with Patti and the other couple, and then were invited to dinner in the main lodge after watching the sunset on the beach. Relaxed, we felt totally pampered as Sammy and Patti served our meal with more food than we could ever have eaten, dining by candlelight. We had coconut water in the husks of the original coconuts and Sammy had chipped off the outer shell to have a beautiful presentation of the coconut. We were offered and accepted hot chocolate and cookies for dessert. We visited until late and again as a family in one of the huts, after walking back in the quiet and darkness of the jungle setting.

We all slept well, kept the sides down on our bungalow as it was windy that night, but very comfortable and quiet. We had our own breakfast together in our bungalow and coffee was provided. Sammy would have delivered coffee at our place if we had wanted in the early morning. He states he does this quietly, leaving the tray a distance from the bungalow so he won't disturb guests.

We lounged for the morning and were picked up by boat again to go back to Pangai for the following day. Patti and Sammy were so personable and so enthused to provide all we needed to make for a relaxing and true vacation.

Services: Patti does provide massage if pre-arranged and the Italian couple enjoyed this service. There were no whales at the time we were there. Patti had a variety of books, games, etc for use at the main building. She did ask ahead of time our preference for food and activities.

Serenity Beaches is exactly that; serene, beautiful and relaxing. We have traveled to numerous beaches in the Carribean, Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, etc. and for beauty and privacy, this is the most private and personal for service and location. The snorkling was some of the best as well.

Target audience: If you are expecting all the conveniences of a resort, you won't find it here. There is no electricity or hot water and we were glad to have toilets, sinks and an outdoor shower in this remote location. This is not a fast paced, activity based, crowded location. This is a place for low key, quiet, serene, relaxed enjoyment of nature, beaches, water sports, good food, and comfortable accommodations.

The best way to describe Serenity Beaches, is as if you are coming as a backpacker, and find “paradise”. If you are a “resort” type traveler, you need to understand this is simplicity at its best, with a romantic approach seeking to have basic comforts met, while enjoying the natural surroundings to the extreme. The type of place that lies somewhere between camping and a resort that respects the environment with out developing it to the point of other locations which all seem to be the same, no matter if you are in Maui or Florida or Cancun. Those places are all over developed and have lost their originality or purpose for me ever going back there. Tonga, I hope keeps and understands the opportunity it has and to never become over developed.

We thoroughly enjoyed the time the five of us had at Serenity Beaches. The imperfection while the place continues to be developed actually added to the enjoyment of the feeling of the isolation and adventure. If you are looking for a five star accommodation, I personally hope those places never come to the more remote areas of this world and we continue to have the ability for traveling to unique places such as Ha’apai.
