Just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable weekend stay. Rooms may not be "boutique" or modern but felt that they were totalling in keeping with a characterful country pub and very clean and comfortable. We ate both nights, food was exceptional better than we were expecting; full credit to the chef. Breakfast was just perfect and set us up for the day. Hope to return for a 2nd visit as its a lovely area to explore and promised my husband Peter that next time I'll pack my walking boots!

We visited this inn for a 2 night stay on a voucher deal. The welcome was very friendly from the landlord who is around for most of the time even when the bar is not open. As a lot of inns now it is a bit run down but the main thing is it is clean and just about to go a full renovation of all the rooms. All the staff are so friendly also and the evening meal was so good and reasonably priced we ate there both nights, also breakfast was excellent. Even the drinks were reasonably priced. We would stay there again when renovated and wish the owner all the best for the future.

Beautiful part of the country. This is a good local pub with accommodation above. People were friendly and it was not that expensive. Nice breakfast. The whole place needs a bit of decorating and the rooms and plumbing facilities are a little tired. But overall, not bad value for money.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis. We had such a relaxing and enjoyable break. The owners and staff were all very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The place was very clean and homely. The food was amazing. Very good cook. We chose to eat here both nights as the food was that good. The location is good. It is next to the River Eden where we enjoyed a day out walking. Once we have stayed somewhere we tend to not go back as we love trying new places but we enjoyed this break so much we will consider going back here again.

We used to visit Duke's Head regularly in the days of the previous owner but after nine months of new ownership we decided to give it a try again today. We were not disappointed. Good beer and excellent food. So many pubs microwave food and say "home made" when it clearly isn't so it was nice to enjoy a lovely vegetarian tart with a salad and lovely dressing and home made chips. My husband enjoyed his ham & pineapple. There was quite a lot of choice on the menu as well as the Sunday Roasts and quite a few things I would have liked to try. This isn't always the case for me as there are a lot of things I don't like. The atmosphere is "cosy". I have seen some previous comments that the Duke's Head is in need of refurbishment but I think this is nonsense!!! It is what a country pub should be - comfortable. I don't enjoy these newly refurbished places that have no atmosphere. We tend to eat out at a lunchtime rather than evenings and will certainly be back.

Our stay at the Dukes Head was very last minute (a short dash from the M6) on a miserable, wet December night and the welcome was warm and friendly. We settled down with a beer (excellent local ales by the way) in front of the open fire with the papers and enjoyed a well-earned relax after a day on the road. Dinner was from a new menu (the new owners have been there for 3 months and a schedule of improvements is well under way): whitebait and home-made fishcake for starters followed by slow roasted belly pork & mustard mash and a great ribeye steak with handcut chips... mmmmmmm! Now I'm a sucker for a good steak and I like it RARE... this one was tender and cooked to perfection which made me a very happy bunny. Oh and the homemade onion rings were crispy and light, not some greasy gut-tumblers from the freezer! Really good and wish we'd had space for a pud. Breakfast was good - OK, no fireworks, but it set us up for the day so no complaints. The only let down was the small en-suite room, which was tired and dated and a bit dominated by a large wardrobe! However we both slept well and were comfy & warm. If Babs & Co can get the rooms to be as good as the food and their hospitality then brilliant and the best of luck for the future.
