“Lovely big house in fantastic location.”
Reviewed April 4, 2014 for a stay in March 2014

There were 18 people in our group ranging from 4 to 70 years old. We were very impressed with Old Kilmun house. It is spacious, comfortable and very well equipped. The location is excellent with stunning scenery and so much to see and do. We enjoyed plenty of walks, exploring the surrounding area. The males in the group were always to be found enjoying the games rooms in the basement, mainly the pool table. The kitchen is very well equipped and we loved using the aga. The dining room is impressive and perfect for large family dinner parties. Some of our group were visiting from Ohio and between the house itself and the beautiful scenery they were absolutely delighted. We also thank Anna and John for a lovely welcome.

I am really glad they had a good time and appreciated the house. I don't quite understand why this is a three star review. The party said they were delighted by the house and the facilities and that they had a lovely time. We were a bit inefficient issuing a receipt for the original deposit paid, but I am a bit confused as to why we have been scored so low!!!

“Great place to recharge your batteries”
Reviewed August 13, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

My family and I (two adults, a 5 year old boy and a 5 month old girl) stayed at old Kilmun house as part of a large family group of 16 and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were lucky enough to have a few days of great weather but even the poor weather days were enjoyable.
The Area of Kilmun is isolated enough in the stunning Scottish countryside to be utterly peaceful and relaxing but within short distance of every convenience you would need.
First impressions of the house were fantastic, as we were first to arrive we received a very warm welcome from the caretakers John and Anna, who preceded to give us a full tour, the actual interior of the house is fantastic and although, as has been mentioned in previous reviews, it has some minor cosmetic touch ups needed we were very impressed especially with the panelled dining room. The gardens were spacious and beautiful although the area to the rear of the property could use a spring clean.
Myself and my wife stayed in one of the large front bedrooms with our youngest (cot bed provided as promised, thank you) whilst our oldest stayed in one of the bunk beds down the corridor with his cousin, our room was beautiful with stunning views over loch holy.
The floorboards around the property are a bit creaky but I loved that and wouldn't change it as it reminds you that you are in a real old house!
The spacious kitchen was the main focal point for our group and I really enjoyed getting to grips with the Aga stove, the kitchen itself has signs of wear (mainly I suspect through neglect from previous holidaymakers) but is fully stocked with every utensil and piece of cutlery you would ever need for large family meals.
The games room and TV snug were well used and the kids enjoyed winding down every evening with a few cartoons or a DVD.
by far my favourite part of the holiday was the beautiful countryside, the driveway of the property is right next to the entrance to the national arboretum, and this will lead you on several short walks of varying difficulty, I personally took the children of the group on a few walks around this forested area and they loved it, there are some fantastic views on offer in this small section alone. I would personally recommend that you carry on up the forestry road towards another area called Pucks glen, if you stay on the road you will eventually see sighs for upper pucks, this is a stunning path alongside a gorgeous waterfall and if followed right to the top gives open hilltop access.
There are some stunning walks on offer for all levels of ability.
The provided information guide gives you lots of options and you should never be bored in this great holiday location.
We were offered some "tablet" by Anne who looks after the house, and it was delicious, although intended for the children, I must confess I think I ate most of it. Thank you very much!!

Tips: there is a petrol station, a few minutes from the house, on the way to Greenock that sells everything you could need for your first night but the Morrison’s or co-op in Greenock are better for a big shop.
If you intend to get the ferry over (recommended) to Greenock then phone ahead and find out about tickets, we went to a shop called Paul’s food & wine (minutes from the ferry) and got return tickets for £24, my father in law (who we did not know planned to take the ferry) paid nearly twice that amount as he did not know about the discounts offered in the shop.

Positives: Location, gorgeous house, location, friendly people, location, proximity to fantastic walks, location, the stunning views and location!

Negatives: Small amounts of maintenance needed, nothing major, so please don’t ruin your stay by going around looking for faults. Negative people focus on negative things.

“Fabulous House... But needs a makeover!”
Reviewed August 1, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Don't get me wrong this house is situated in the most beautiful spot for stunning views and easy access to lochs and picturesque walks. The house itself is presented wonderfully and is very spacious however some of the points made on the website have been exaggerated for instants;the badminton sets were not complete and the trampoline is a much smaller size then expected. Those were just miner and didn't stop us from having a fabulous week! The bedrooms are light and Comfortable and the bathrooms are modern and simple for a old house! Work does need to be done to Old Kilmun House like a fresh lick of paint and new kitchen equipment as only 2 hobs work! This house is superb for large parties like myself and has a very warm cosy feel to it. I didn't want to leave!

sorry there were some elements of imperfection. we would never knowingly present the house with two of the four hobs working, or an incomplete badminton set. new badminton set and hob now ordered (today 5th August, having read the review this morning). we get to paintwork before and after the season but cant really pick up problems on that between guests...glad you enjoyed and appreciated the house. we will make sure we dont pretend the trampoline is bigger than it is!!!

Reviewed August 1, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

An excellent property, perfect for all our needs and in an ideal location to explore a beautiful part of Scotland.
Property was well equipped and felt very homely. Lots of indoor games, books etc to enjoy if the weather is bad and beautiful garden to enjoy if the weather is good.
Great idea to have a large fridge in the downstairs games room which saved lots of trips upstairs to refill the wine glass in the evenings!!

“Great house but far from 4 star luxury billed. Needs a big upgrade.”

13 of us and 4 dogs spent a great weekend at Kilmun in January for a family celebration. Super for kids, lovely garden and situation, nice bedrooms, but don't be fooled by the pictures. The decor is very tired (there were holes in lounge wall!), the public rooms are cold unless you keep the fire roaring (only a small quantity of coal/logs supplied) & we had problems with smoke coming down the lounge chimney. The kitchen is cosy with the Aga, but the electric oven/grill didn't work, the dishwasher didn't wash properly, the cafetiere was broken, CD player didn't work and there were food remains on the floor under the table. Super fridge though! Bathrooms again in need of an upgrade, one shower didn't stay up had to be hand held and no en-suite bathrooms in this 'luxury' house.
The games room downstairs is good but again on the cold side in January. We didn't light the stove as there was no guard for small children and we would have had to buy extra wood.
Beware - there is no inventory or walk round check with caretaker on arrival - we had issues with the return of our deposit, taking 5 weeks to calculate cost of alleged damage by our dogs. The property is not gated so dogs can't be left in garden.
There are lovely walks nearby and a super wee BYOB restaurant within walking distance - the Sunday carvery there is excellent!
We negotiated a small discount on the rental given the time of year but it was still over-priced. This is a house with lots of potential but If you are looking for luxury you will be disappointed.

This party were very happy when they left and raised no issues. We then gradually fell out with them - a bit, unintentionally - over our insistence that they paid for the damage their dogs did. They also broke one of a set of old Spanish bowls, but we just wrote that off. I think their slightly unfair comments are generated through frustration about the damage and the fact that we wanted them to pay for the repair. Our decor isnt tired, because we do always make repairs of this sort!! We score at the very top of visitscotland's 4 star rating for excellence. And get consistently lovely reviews from guests. We have attracted more than 40 bookings in each of the last seven years.

The problem with this party was the four big dogs. They were trapped by their owners in a small area using some sort of large stair-gate contraption of their own devising, and between the dogs and the gate, they did a bit of damage. It took ages to sort out (Argyll being Argyll, and Argyll tradesmen being Argyll tradesmen.) The lady leading the party got more and more annoyed, thinking we were trying to hold onto more of the deposit than was justified. In fact, we ended up charging them £60 for the damage - less than many houses actually charge for 4 dogs. We make no charge for dogs. None of the other alleged problems were brought to our attention at the time, and they said they had had a lovely time. We have now corrected all the other issues mentioned, apart from the issue of en suite bathrooms - we don't advertise ourselves as having any. Of everything that they say, that's the fairest comment!!!
