“Good pub food and great customer service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2013

Not sure why the other reviews of this place are so mixed. My husband, new baby and I stayed here and had great pub food (a burger and a chicken salad), excellent customer service (gracious room service when our baby decided she wasn't going to settle) and an absolutely wonderful room (with a proper bath, fresh coffee, and very comfy bed). Highly recommend !

Stayed here on the way to Gatwick. The room was very comfortable, with good bedding, a hairdryer, huge tv, quiet. Breakfast was very good, a buffet of homebaked bread and jams, yoghurt, cereals, juice, coffee, tea and then a hot breakfast if desired. Nice place, lots of pig photographs. Felt more of a restaurant-hotel than a pub. Felt a bit designed rather than evolved, but once it settles it should be fine. Very convenient to Gatwick, so we'll consider it should we be needing to stay in the area again.

We turned up at 6.30pm and had a bit of a wait to be served by the primadona girls who were discussing Shellac behind the bar,but this was the only problem that we encountered. We were advised that we could order at the bar if we wanted to eat in the garden and that we could order a starter that would be served as such. Ordered 2 pizzas and garlic bread and yes there was a slight delay between the starter and the main but it was warranted, as we hate being rushed. Service was very good even though our waiter was rushed off his feet and apologised for not spending more time with us as we left. The food was excellent but as someone has already mentioned the manager needs to kick a couple of the 'lovely' people into gear!!!

Good menu and high quality food. Great theme and decor inside and out but they were short of staff for efficient service, although the staff were friendly.

The outdoor tables include individual gazebos which are great for small groups.

Need to address the number of wasps but it won't stop us going back.

The Curious Pig in the Parlour is a new hotel and in all honesty- it shows. This said I am thoroughly convinced that with a few changes made and perhaps a bit of staff restructuring, the hotel has the potential to be a delightful weekend retreat.

On arrival at the hotel we were pleasantly surprised by the modern country-style décor. They’ve definitely done the place up very recently as we could smell the paint still! Unfortunately though, our first impressions were somewhat dampened by the sight of a large number of seemingly clean, folded napkins dumped in the corner of the reception area- on the floor. My partner remarked that he hoped we wouldn’t be using the same napkins later for our evening meal- alas I believe we did. The hotelier we met on arrival seemed slightly out of his depths, but was very friendly and definitely hardworking. In fact I do suspect that some of the issues we faced during our stay were down to him simply being stretched too thinly. He was constantly running about the hotel taking on various roles.

The room was charming and cosy- however very much on the small side considering we’d booked a deluxe. Air conditioning is not provided in any of the rooms and this is definitely a change they need to prioritise. In the middle of July you can imagine how stuffy a small room can get. As we were on the ground floor, instead of windows we only had doors which opened up to the outside area. Obviously we could not keep these open throughout the night without feeling like our safety and privacy were somewhat jeopardised. The dark heavy curtains in front of the door may an attempt to restore some privacy, however unfortunately these make the room very dark. There was only a very small window in the bathroom we could have open- but just our luck, by 7pm in the evening cigarette smoke from people outside began to waft in.

We had both an evening meal and breakfast at the hotel. Both were satisfactory, but nothing special. Pizza’s seem to be their main draw- I went for a vegetarian option which would have probably been quite nice had it not been smothered with some kind of sweet barbeque sauce. For breakfast, a continental breakfast was included in our room price. Unfortunately though the continental breakfast was lacking in range- a bit of cornflakes and small selection of fruit juices really isn’t adequate. They definitely need to add some muesli, fresh fruit and perhaps a few pastries to the menu. Oh talking of menu- there isn’t one! Well not for breakfast anyway. We decided to get a full English, but ordering it became quite a lengthy process consisting of us having to ask the hotelier if they had something, then him having to check with the kitchen- lots of back and forth. I think the service at meal times is by far the most pressing issue for The Curios Pig. Aside from the hotelier there seemed to be only a few very young/junior members of staff, none of which seemed to know what they were doing. Our toast came without any butter, then our butter came without any knife, then our breakfast came without any cutlery…..grrrrrr very tedious. To add to this the cutlery was definitely not as clean as it should have been. Meanwhile our tea pot seemed to have been used and then refilled, with tea stains all the way down the side. Then I asked for a clean teacup as the one I was offered had dried bits of food inside it. The cup that arrived was also not very clean - totally unacceptable. To make things worse all our cutlery was plonked down on the wooden outdoors table- would a placemat or at least a napkin really have been that much trouble?

I feel I have been quite harsh on The Curious Pig, but this is an honest account of my stay. I believe the hotelier in particular is trying very hard, but needs some support and guidance. He is a very nice man and when we asked how much it would cost to check out late, he said there were no other bookings that day so we could have the room for a couple more hours at no additional charge. This was very much appreciated and a redeeming factor for the hotel. If given the option I would probably stay at the Curious Pig in the Parlour again. However, until they get to grips with the standard of service their customers expect- it will unfortunately remain a pit stop when in need of a bed.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms at the back are very dark and have no windows or air conditioning. Therefore unle...

Came to this pub for a family birthday celebration...lovely pub, and lovely food ...WHEN IT ARRIVED ! a table of 4 , two meals turned up, and so as not to let the food cool, we suggested they start....our other Two meals arrived as the first 2 had finished !!!!...Staff really nice, but not very attentive, quite expensive.
Sort your timing out and staff problems then we may be back .

I will not even dignify this place with a review! Note to Manager-when short of staff in the kitchen, warn customers at reception-do not stuff the restaurant with customers and keep them waiting well over an hour for their main course and then complain that you are busy.First time in my life I have walked out,and all around other customers were complaining at delays and quality of the food.Thank you for ruining a rare trip to see my daughter and grandsons. Fortunately we went to the Harvester in Crawley just as crowded ,but served immediately with unlimited salad barVisit and learn how to do it oir change your career!¬

Room Tip: Do not bother!
