We arrived footsore and weary from walking Hadrian's Wall from Carlisle to be greeted by a friendly face and an instant offer of tea and cake... perfect.
Throughout our stay we were made to feel very welcome (even with a very barky, large alsatian travelling with us) and the dinner we were served was excellent.
Breakfast was very tasty and the room spacious and comfortable.
Thank you Christina and Bob for your hospitality. It was the icing on the cake of a wonderful day of walking.

Best wishes

Debbie and Linda

Hi, thank you for your speedy and generous review. It was a great pleasure to welcome you, your daughter and dog. Though she had a big bark your dog settled well and was friendly, getting along with Mutley with no hesitation. I trust you will enjoy your walk in the Hadrian’s Wall sunshine, lots of sun cream and drinks required this week. We are Salmon fishing so will be reading books under a tree through the heat of the day. We very much look forward to welcoming you back to Lanercost. Kind regards, Christina and Bob.

We stayed for one night while walking hadrians wall. The house was nice and the room was lovely, however, when we decided to eat out rather than in the house, we were interrogated to no end. This made us feel very uncomfortable. The owner kept boasting about the fact that she was a professional chef and that no restaurant locally could compare to her cooking. I do not feel it is appropriate for B&B owners to be quite so critical if guests would rather explore and eat dinner elsewhere.
Having said this, the room was nice and clean. There was tea making facilities in the room, and the breakfast was good.

Hi. Thank you for your review, we do take note of all comments and are always trying to improve our hosting skills. We are pleased that you liked the house and your room and that you enjoyed breakfast.
Supper is bookable in advance and we also have a book with a comprehensive collection of menus from local tearooms, pubs and restaurants. We ask guests to add to the collection when they have enjoyed a good meal. This may be a lunch, tea, great beer or meeting a super waitress with a friendly welcome or great local knowledge. Thus giving a good idea of food, drink and special gems in the area, we have used this to advise guests of what is available and where. I am saddened if this was misunderstood. I don’t describe myself as a chef but as a cook. I am a former chef but don’t claim to be one now. I don’t wear a chef’s jacket; my personal passion is food and wine. If my enthusiasm was mistaken for criticism of others please take my word that it was not my intention. We have some super menus and great food reports in the book and trust that guests will find it an asset. Kind regards, Christina and Bob.

My daughter and I hiked along Hadrians Wall for Help For Heros Charity and found a welcoming fire and tea and homemade cakes on our return. All the food was amazing and Bob and Christina were wonderful hosts and of course Mutley the dog was gorgeous. Definitely recommend and will be back.

I hiked along the Hadrian's Wall with my wife, and amongst six B&B's along the route, this one was outstanding! Bob and Christina are very friendly hosts, nice and clean rooms, good food, and all this within a fair and beautiful scenery. When we arrived, we have been totally rain-drenched, so Bob started a fire in the chimney and Christina made a tea and served homecooked chocolate brioche. What a warm welcome! Unfortunately, we stayed only for one night and then had to go on. But if we had more time, we would have stayed at this place!

Room Tip: Early booking required (just four rooms).

It was a wonderful warm welcome at Lanercost after a long and rainy day on the Hadrians Wall. Sitting in front of the fireplace Bob and Christina offered us tea and homemade Brioche. Our bedroom was lovely decorated with a large and modern bathroom. Yes, we have also heard the starting of the hot water boiler, but this is an old building! Very friendly Christina and Bob helped us to dry our totally wet shoes and clothes and we spent our evening with a really delicious homemade dinner. Good Wine and even homemade dessert. We enjoyed our stay and the wonderful small talks very much. We will come back, that´s for sure!

The location of this B&B is wonderful. Close to everything in the region. We stayed there for 3 nights recently as a group of 4 and had a good time. The log fire when we arrived was great. Especially as 2 of the 4 come from North Queensland. The priory ruins and the church are not to be missed. Our bedroom (the cheapest), with the view of the priory, was very nice and the bathroom with the bookshelf in it was great. However, I'm not sure how they have a 5 star rating. In our bedroom, in a cupboard, was the hot water system, which one morning started up at 6.45. Our towels weren't changed for the 3 days we were there and the heated towel racks weren't turned on, and as the weather was not the best, they stayed damp. The cooked breakfast was very limited with only pancakes, full cumbrian and kippers. Boring, especially if you are there for more than 1 night. Not what I would have expected from a top chef. If I knew all of this beforehand I would not have stayed there.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the priory view room. However, it is the cheapest.

Hi, Thank you for your review, We want our guests to enjoy Lanercost and are always trying to improve our hosting. On reading your comments I phoned our carpenter stright away and he is sound proofing the cupboard. The towel rail is part of the heating system and heats when the temtrature goes below 20 degrees. We have found that above that tempreture they dry when hung on the rail. We change towels after three days and more often on request.
For breakfast the breads are all home made, the brown wholemeal being made with olive oil and the white is a brioche made with milk, butter and our own eggs, The meat is from local farms and the kippers from craister on the Northumberland coast. I make all the jams and marmlade and the apricot jam we are using at the moment is made with Northumbrian apricots. We offer our own home made muesli and apricots soaked in earl grey tea and served with local yogurt. We also offer fresh fruit smoothie. Our eggs, from Bob's rear breed chickens, are fresh and can be served in pancakes, boiled, scrambled, poached or an omlet if requested. All our ingredence are freash, local and to be enjoyed. We are happy to caer for any personal prefrences or dietary requirments guets may have.
