“Heavily recommended!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2012

I hiked along the Hadrian's Wall with my wife, and amongst six B&B's along the route, this one was outstanding! Bob and Christina are very friendly hosts, nice and clean rooms, good food, and all this within a fair and beautiful scenery. When we arrived, we have been totally rain-drenched, so Bob started a fire in the chimney and Christina made a tea and served homecooked chocolate brioche. What a warm welcome! Unfortunately, we stayed only for one night and then had to go on. But if we had more time, we would have stayed at this place!

Room Tip: Early booking required (just four rooms).

It was a wonderful warm welcome at Lanercost after a long and rainy day on the Hadrians Wall. Sitting in front of the fireplace Bob and Christina offered us tea and homemade Brioche. Our bedroom was lovely decorated with a large and modern bathroom. Yes, we have also heard the starting of the hot water boiler, but this is an old building! Very friendly Christina and Bob helped us to dry our totally wet shoes and clothes and we spent our evening with a really delicious homemade dinner. Good Wine and even homemade dessert. We enjoyed our stay and the wonderful small talks very much. We will come back, that´s for sure!

Hi, Thank you for your super review. It was a pleasure to welcome you both to Lanercost. We are lucky. It is a super seting with the Priory ruins nest door, in fact Bob's chickens are on the Priory fish ponds site. Bob and I enjoyed welcoming you in to our home and look forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards, Bob and Christina

Great food, v comfortable beds, old house with elegant decor, very hospitable, and the cleverest dog we have ever met - Mutley, a friendly spaniel who can retrieve anything including a particular stone thrown into the gravel driveway

The location of this B&B is wonderful. Close to everything in the region. We stayed there for 3 nights recently as a group of 4 and had a good time. The log fire when we arrived was great. Especially as 2 of the 4 come from North Queensland. The priory ruins and the church are not to be missed. Our bedroom (the cheapest), with the view of the priory, was very nice and the bathroom with the bookshelf in it was great. However, I'm not sure how they have a 5 star rating. In our bedroom, in a cupboard, was the hot water system, which one morning started up at 6.45. Our towels weren't changed for the 3 days we were there and the heated towel racks weren't turned on, and as the weather was not the best, they stayed damp. The cooked breakfast was very limited with only pancakes, full cumbrian and kippers. Boring, especially if you are there for more than 1 night. Not what I would have expected from a top chef. If I knew all of this beforehand I would not have stayed there.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the priory view room. However, it is the cheapest.

Hi, Thank you for your review, We want our guests to enjoy Lanercost and are always trying to improve our hosting. On reading your comments I phoned our carpenter stright away and he is sound proofing the cupboard. The towel rail is part of the heating system and heats when the temtrature goes below 20 degrees. We have found that above that tempreture they dry when hung on the rail. We change towels after three days and more often on request.
For breakfast the breads are all home made, the brown wholemeal being made with olive oil and the white is a brioche made with milk, butter and our own eggs, The meat is from local farms and the kippers from craister on the Northumberland coast. I make all the jams and marmlade and the apricot jam we are using at the moment is made with Northumbrian apricots. We offer our own home made muesli and apricots soaked in earl grey tea and served with local yogurt. We also offer fresh fruit smoothie. Our eggs, from Bob's rear breed chickens, are fresh and can be served in pancakes, boiled, scrambled, poached or an omlet if requested. All our ingredence are freash, local and to be enjoyed. We are happy to caer for any personal prefrences or dietary requirments guets may have.

Bob & Christina were very welcoming offering tea and homemade chocolate cake each day we came home. Breakfasts were great.
We had dinner one evening which was extremely good - Christina is a great cook.
Very relaxing & quiet and very convenient for exploring Hadrians Wall with Lanercost Priory on your doorstep.
Will definitely be back.

Lanercost is a wonderful B&B, run by Bob and Christina who could not have been more welcoming. Bedroom and bathroom were lovely and very comfortable. It was horrible weather the weekend we stayed but having been greeted by a roaring log fire, tea and homemade chocolate cake in the guest lounge we soon forgot that. The breakfast was fantastic and they went beyond the call of duty in cooking us breakfast to order at 5.15 am before our walk started.

We stayed here en route from England to home in Aberdeenshire. We had a great experience from start to end. After a long drive we were greeted by tea and wonderful home made chocolate cake in front of a fire - what a nice start. Given we were tired, we opted for dinner the first night. This consisted of three wonderful home made courses accompanied by a glass of draught beer and wine for myself and wife respectively. Extremely good value and timing was to suit us (around the hectic Wimbledon tennis schedule). Our hosts showed why they made the 2012 finals of the "Friendliest B&B", by inviting us to eat our fabulous plum crumble in their private sitting room to enable to watch a crucial stage of the epic Nadal match (we are both big tennis fans).

Our room was excellent, large, beautifully decorated and well kitted out with proper tea and coffee (no sachets here), huge king size bed and even bigger top notch bathroom with quality fittings. The B&B has only relatively recently been converted from a private house and is well decorated throughout in country house style and is situated in a beautiful setting, immediately in front of the ancient Lanercost Priory.

Cooked breakfasts were equally impressive (and we particularly recommend the tea soaked apricots with yoghurt as an "opener") as a great set up for the day. Christina and Bob, the owners, could not have been more helpful with recommendations as to what to do and where to go in the local area. They even invited us to join them for a drink at the nearby local cricket club bar in our last evening, taking hosting to an entirely new level!

We would highly recommend Lanercost B&B - you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: We stayed in the River Room (but they all looked nice)!

Hi, It was our pleasure to welcome you to Lanercost and to watch the most amazing tennis match with you over pudding. At times the dinning table should be deserted and for tennis fans that match was one. Thank you for all your kind words, Lanercost is a specail place and the comunity bar at the cricket club is a great place to meet the local comunity and enjoy a great pint or two of local ale.
We look forward to your return.
