We came here with high hopes and were disappointed with what we experienced.
Firstly, we were greeted at the door by a very grim and depressed looking woman who acted as though we were a nuisance to her day. We were seated and then had a look at the menu. The grim woman came back to our table to check if we were ready to order, we asked for a few more minutes and this appeared to be an issue for her. She reluctantly said ok.
When she came back we ordered our mains.
The food didn't take very long to arrive but when it arrived we were slightly surprised at the size of the mains. For a 20-30 dollar meal you would expect more! The food was unadventurous and lacked finesse - definitely not something to write home about.
The grim woman seemed to do all she could to make our night worse and she went the right way about it!

On the positive side, we had a lovely ginger steam pudding dessert and the location is great, but the bad outweighs the good unfortunately.

I visited the Front Room for Sunday lunch over Queen's Birthday weekend with two friends and as the restaurant had been recommended to us we arrived with high expectations. We were advised that there would be a 30 minute wait on food and after the waitress took our orders we settled in to experience the ambiance of our surroundings. This was cut short upon hearing the chef swearing profanities at the wait staff while the clearly untrained employees tried to manage the heavy weekend clientele which the kitchen had not pre-empted at all. An hour after ordering as we were about to exit the restaurant our food arrived with the waitress stating the chips that were meant to be an accompaniment to our meals would be a further 10 minutes. When I said we'd been waiting an hour for our food she simply shrugged and offered no further explanation. The food sans chips was a good average, nothing special, over priced and certainly not worth the wait. I have travelled all over the world and can honestly say this was the worst dining experience I have had to date.

We were taken by friends to check out the restaurant before booking for a group later in the week. There was a long wait before the food arrived but it was very good when it did. The service staff obviously had no training, reaching a cross the table to serve, pour wine etc and it was very noisy, needs some noise absorbing curtains etc. But gasp, horror, when I went to pay my half of the bill. I thought the charge was for the whole bill not half of it. Wellington prices but not Wellington standard.

Had a meal that would be the equal of the top 5 restaurants in Welllington city in food and service. As we arrived at 7:30pm, it seemed the rich oldies of Waikanae had finished their meals and we had the place almost to ourselves. Try the crispy pork belly entree and the ginger pudding thing - yum. Even my hard to pelase mother enjoyed this meal.
