“Very comfortable and very very clean”
Reviewed August 7, 2012

We stayed for one night recently and received a friendly welcome on arrival. The motel complex looked very dated on the outside but pleasingly the owners had been making efforts to make some improvements to the inside. Our unit looked dated in places as renovations were only partially done but the bed was very comfortable and the large tv screen meant we got to enjoy the Olympics in style. The most impressive thing was just how clean the unit was, simply couldn't fault it and the provision of a generous amount of tea and coffee and Eco friendly body wash and shampoo were a nice touch.

The one thing I must highlight though is the very close proximity of the hotel to the train line (literally just across the road). The noise and vibration of passing trains was fairly impressive but it turned out not to be a problem as they seem to stop running at some point in the evening and didn't resume until around 7 am at the time of our stay. The owners were kind enough to allocate us a room at the rear of the complex without being asked and we were thankful for that.

All in all a very nice stay. The owners are to be commended for their friendly customer service and excellent standard of cleanliness of our unit.

Room Tip: Try and get a room to the rear of the motel to minimize noise from traffic on the main road and of c...

We are always delighted to know when guests have experienced a comfortable stay and enjoyed the service and facilities offered at our motel.
Kapiti Gateway Motel was built in the 1970s and as can be seen in the photos, has been renovated and repainted using a more modern colour scheme (last repaint early 2012). The solid concrete construction of motel buildings from this era actually enhance guest comfort - little or no noise between units and general spaciousness are two recurring comments we receive.
The complex does not face the main road but runs parallel to Martin Street which has little or no traffic at night. There are two units near the road end of the complex and guests who are senstive to road noise are not offered these rooms. Well established trees and shrubs provide an excellent sound barrier along the main road boundary.

This Motel looks quite tired from the outside, but it is really worth the stay. The rooms are modern on inside, has all the sky channels, bathroom in our unit had been modernised, the sleep quality was very good for a motel, and with such a good location I was amazed how quiet it was in the unit. We had a two bedroom unit, which had an additional bed in the lounge allowing three of us to stay comfortable. Extra person rate for the lounge was only $10! Most places $30. You get propper bottles of milk in the fridge, rather than this horrible plastic pottles that nobody likes to use. I would have no problems staying here for a week or more and may well return next summer with family.

Room Tip: There is a great steak restuarant just down the road. Make sure you book or you won't get in.

My partner and I had to be in Waikanae for just one evening and in the middle of winter that was, which is a double shame: we should have stayed longer and we should have come in summer. This is a place that looks small from the outside, but is actually much bigger when you are inside, all the facilities work beautifully and there is a bonus: the hosts are some of the most user-friendly I have encountered. If you are planning to spend some time on the lovely Kapiti Coast, give them a call!

Room Tip: It's up to your budget, but we got a nice upstairs room, maybe a bit more expensive, but worth i...

Motel is a bit dated in look but very well maintained. Screen doors do a great job of keeping out the light. Main disappointment was only 5MB free wifi, and in some parts of the room we couldnt get reception at all. Service was great though, so overall we are happy.

Thank you for your review - we appreciate the feed back and are pleased that overall you were happy with your experience at Kapiti Gateway Motel. Regarding WiFi - we have responded to yours and other feedback from guests, requesting more free internet. We now offer 50MB free and have had the property refitted with wireless repeaters which have certainly improved coverage. We also now have the ability to offer extra free internet for those users who require it - great for skyping. Thanks again - without your feedback we would be unable to continually improve the service we offer guests.

My brother, wife, partner and I were going up to Hawera for a family gathering so decided to stay in Waikanae. When I was phoning around I found Viv very helpful on the phone. She told me about all the deals they had going. The room was clean and well presented. We all found the service great and they were very freindly. Thank you for recommending the restrurant in the Waikanae Hotel, we had a wonderful evening. We would certainly recommend this motel and I would stay there again.

We are avid travellers and take our 8 year old Maltese 'Miss Jak" with us everywhere.

Viv and Russel at Kapiti Gateway made us most welcome and were more than happy to accommodate Miss Jak.

Now that we have found Kapiti Gateway, this will be a regular stopping place for us as it is ideally located as well as being as being a very pleasant stay.

Thanks Viv and Russell. See you next time!

Quick stopover following a late night ferry from Picton to Wellington and a big drive to Auckland the next day. Room was tidy and had everything we needed, plenty of space and was pet friendly! Our cat who was dutifully travelling with us was able to be inside the unit and was as happy as a travelling cat can be.
Staff were very friendly and accommodating during the phone booking, check-in and check-out.
