“So much better than expected”

We stayed at Clyst St George Inn for one night as a stop off between Western & central England. It was just meant to be a convenient resting place right off the motorway, but it was so much more than that. The room was clean and comfortable - nothing spectacular but pleasant to stay in. The real treat here was the restaurant: one of the best we found during our 10 day holiday in the UK. The atmosphere was great, the food was wonderful and the service was friendly and attentive. If you are in Exeter you should stop in - you won't be disappointed!

On her 85th birthday weekend, my sister and I took our Mum back to this hotel, where she and our Dad had spent their honeymoon 63 years ago.

The attention my Mum was given when she explained her story to the Manager was lovely. He listened and commented attentively and found a framed photo of the hotel during the era. Throughout out visit, he was courteous and engaged with us, asking about our trips during the day and thoroughly pleasant. This attitude was echoed throughout the staff from the waiter, Graham, who wrote a personal happy birthday note to Mum, to the welcoming attitude of the staff, particularly the kitchen manager. In fact everyone I met was a credit to the organisation.

As regards the room, it was small, dark and hot, but it was clean and tidy. The beds were comfortable and the bathroom adequate.

The menu in the restaurant is varied - we ate one lunch and two evening meals. I would like to see more variety of light food/snacks on the menu. Contintental breakfast was fine, with a good array and nice coffee.

The weather was fantastic and the area lovely - so we had a very good experience.

Room Tip: Try to get a room at the back as the hotel fronts onto a fairly busy intersection - we couldn't...

Hotel is advertised as being a small village atmosphere. However it is right on the edge of a roundabout and set back only by pavement width from a very busy road. Very noisy.
Twin room, for self and 10 year old son, was very small and cramped, tiny bathroom with dirty or stained floor. Uncomfortable beds. Bottom sheet on one bed old and ripped.
No towels in room on arrival.
Food very poor standard, badly cooked, had to wait a long time even though ordered early and was not very busy. Additional 25 minute wait for dessert. I had informed hotel when booking we were leaving before breakfast hours and asked for continental breakfast in room. On arrival, (and check in took ages as only one member of staff " knew the system") we were told to ask later. When I did this at 1900 I was offered a tray, to be taken to the room then, of ham and cheese and a croissant "or something", which "should be ok overnight at ambient room temperature ". the rooms were stifling hot, due to the weather and there was actually nowhere in the room to put a tray, it was so small. When this was pointed out I received the shrugged shoulders, blank stare approach to customer service.
Never again, it was like stepping back in time to the bad old days of British hotel standards.

Had a really bad experience here. Food average for the price, they charged £2.00 extra for a piece of bacon with a burger, didn't bring the condiments out with the meal and had to ask twice before they finally arrived whilst the food was getting cold. I actually saw the waiter attending to other diners. Then when I went to pay the bill that was another hassle, had to ask twice and the barman seemed miffed at this! Certainly won't be going back!

On the corner of a roundabout on the edge of town there is this charming budget priced hotel. There is nothing near by. Don't go there if you want to be pampered or expecting five star service or a bustling beach side village. What you do get is a charming old fashioned hotel, relax, sit back have an ale (or two) and just let time drift by. The rooms a spacious, bathrooms clean and beds comfortable. The breakfast is basic but adequate.

Room Tip: Ask for a room towards the rear away from the road if you are a light sleeper.

Stayed for two nights, we know the hotel and location, but the published location details are mis-leading if you don't, as it is stated that the hotel is in the pretty village of Clyst St George. Actually the location is at the junction of three busy roads on a mini-roundabout, our room was the one nearest to the road and between 7am & 9am the traffic is very heavy, which may be a problem to some people. Breakfast is fine, except the croissants seemed to be a bit stale, maybe would be improved if they could be served warm? We ate in the hotel one evening and found the staff to be very welcoming, but there was too few of them. It was fairly busy but the staff disappeared on several occasions, having said that someone would come to take the order, they didn't until we returned to the bar to ask. Several times people left their tables to seek out someone to order the next course, get drinks etc etc. Drinks that we ordered at the table took ages to come and when we wanted to pay the bill we had to go to the bar and ask, along with someone else who was trying to order a pudding but had been waiting for ages. The staff were helpful and friendly but all the time they seemed to be trying to do something else at the same time, at one point an extremely large bottle of Brasso was put on the bar and used, the smell of which was overwhelming to those eating in one area! They should focus on ensuring that their customers are dealt with rather than doing other things The food was OK, I would suggest that choosing simple dishes from the menu is the best option, as they looked better than something more challenging. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, we would stay again for a purpose but request a quieter room and probably not eat in.

Room Tip: Request a room away from the front

Came here for a meal with my partner on a Saturday evening. We entered the pub where it states 'come in, choose a table, and we will do the rest' so we chose a table only to sit there with no service for at least 10-15 mins, we went up to the bar and had to wait for the bar maid to return, then a guy came and we asked for a table for two he said there were no tables for two where we wanted to sit but there was plenty! So he just left us to choose a table and walked off! the food was okay, but only okay! the chips tasted like cheap oven chips and the burger was average! overall, everything felt very sloppy and the customer service was non existent! won't be returning!
