“Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed August 6, 2010

We stayed for two nights and found this an excellent spot to see the sights. The staff were brilliant, friendly nad helpful, the food was very good and reasonably priced. The room was adequate and the bed was great. If you are looking for a reasonably proce hotel this is it. If you're expectations are pitched at a solid 3 1/2 motel this is it.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of July, as others have said it is tired and in need of care, but the staff were excellant friendly and helpful.
The food was good, a reasonable choice and well presented.
The room was spotless, but the paint was peeling off the windows the bed was very comfortable.
The main complaint must be that we had room 22, amazing veiw over the valley below, but situated over the dining room and onSaturday night they had a function with a live band right under our room, very very loud . If you are staying there check you are not over the dining room if they have ant functions while you are there.
Having said that, if they had no function on and you are not looking for super modern this is a good place to stop.

I am a little taken aback by how flattering the other reviews are,
Starting with the plus points BEAUTIFUL views, comfy bed, nice staff.
Not so good points, we stayed in room five and if you get this room i would suggest that you ask to be moved , as the other rooms maybe better?
As you enter there is a black liquid stain right down the wall, looks horribly like an old blood stain that they havent bothered to paint over.
Dont get me wrong, the room had been cleaned, I know this as i tried to remove the stain myself but couldnt, but i really dont understand why they hadnt just pained over it???? It was a little off putting everytime i looked at it. The decor overall was dirty looking and old. You certainly wouldnt want to spend any prolonged time in the room.
The fan in the bathroom came on with the bathroom light, and if you got up in the night to use the toilet (as i inevitably did as im pregnant) an put the light on the fan stayed on for ages after the light had been switched off and it was very noisy.

The food in th restaurant was just "OLD ENGLISH INNS" standard menu served at every Old english inn, and it wasnt brilliant, a bit tasteless and expensive for what it is.
I asked one of the waitresses what cheeses were in the fondue as being pregnant there are certain cheeses i cant eat, and she shrugged her shoulders and said :-I" dont know, i think swiss, dont really know as it just comes in a packet"??? my husband and i were waiting for her to offer to ask the chef and after a long silence she finally did and returned form the kitchen with the reply
" the chef said it isnt recommended for pregnant ladies as we dont know whats in it"
NICE!!!!
I wouldnt return to the Rising Sun, which is a shame as i sid earlier, the views are sprectacular, I would however recommend using the bar and going for a drink outside in the summer.

Lovely hotel staff very friendly and made you welcome, lovely views of Malvern hills , Excellent food, good choose of menu for breakfast and evening meal, bar food also available, very popular with the locals lovely area for walking and trips to lovely cotswolds villages, a bus stop outside hotel into Cheltenham could do with updating and painting but all in all a lovely place to stay .

1 night stay, paying £64 b&b. My room (22) had a superb view over the Malvern Hills and was really the highlight of the stay. Staff were generally welcoming & professional and the room was comfortable.

Main gripes: some parts of the decor are decidly worn and they seemed under-staffed in the morning with the Duty Manager covering both front desk and the breakfast room.

A problem with the bathroom fan kept me awake until late but my bar bill was refunded as a courtesy.

The hotel is adjacent to good country walks (up Cleeve Hill) so bring your walking boots.

Would stay again but there are other tempting choices nearby such as 'Malvern Views'.

We stayed here for 2 nights recently because we had received an offer which was £99 for 2 nights, inc breakfast whch was fantastic value for money.

Location: it's situated at the top of a hill so the views are lovely. It's approx 10 minutes drive into Cheltenham and 5 minutes drive to a lovely village called Winchcombe which had a reasonable selection of shops, pubs, bars and restaurants. To get to Winchcombe turn right out of the hotel car park. In Winchcombe we enjoyed champagne cocktails in a wine bar followed by a delicious meal at the restaurant next door. I can't remember the name of either though unfortunately!

Rooms: our room was nice enough with a big bay window with a lovely view. Ask for rooms 1-6 if you want a room at the front with a view. I think rooms 2, 4 and 6 have the big bay windows. These rooms were nice and quiet as well.

Bar: the bar/pub area was fine, although the carpet in the bar is dreadful, almost gives you a headache looking at it! Some of the drinks were very good value (there were some bottles of wine for under £10). The bar menu was also very good with some specials which took it above and beyond the usual pub food. Items which we ordered and loved were the ploughmans style platter, chicken tikka pasties and garlic foccacia topped with olives and balsamic glazed leaves. There is a light airy conservatory off the bar area but the tables seemed to get reserved early on in there.

Restaurant: we ate dinner in the restaurant one night and it was extremely good for pub restaurant food... good value for money too. We had duck wontons, prawns and smoked salmon on a potato rosti to start. Mains were rib eye steak and crab ravioli. For dessert we share a mini sharing platter. As with the lunchtime bar food, we felt that the food standard was above what we expected for a pub/hotel chain.

Breakfast: it had all the standard stuff ... cereals, fruit, muffins, pastries, yoghurt etc from which you serve yourself. Then a hot breakfast menu consisting of full English, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, kippers and a lovely cheese and thick cut ham on toast with a poached egg.

Other stuff:
- There was ample parking in the large car park behind the hotel.
- There is a large beer garden and a small terrace which looks down over Cheltenham. It's nice to sit and eat lunch out there or to have drinks before dinner.
- The staff were all very friendly. There were a number of occasions when we commented to each other about how great the service was.

Overall, i'd say this was a nice pub/hotel in a pretty location, perfectly located for a couple of days in Cheltenham and the surrounding areas. The food is better that I would personally expect from a chain and I think it's great value for money.

We'd definitely stay again if we were in the area, particularly if we receive another discount offer!

Hotel is set in to Cleeve Hill, so it's on several levels which, unfortunately are unsuitable for disabled guests. Our room had a fantastic view over to Malvern Hills, but you'd be really unlucky if any room didn't! The staff are friendly and efficient, food excellent and suprisingly not over-priced, and amazingly enough they also have 'real ale' on hand-pumps! We enjoyed the quiz night, and although we got snowed-in, we were comfortable and warm. Spent some time in the wonderful 180 degree lounge window admiring the views. A real 'chill-out' haven.
