Always have a good meal.
Always get good service.
NEVER get table or seating as specifically requested.
The last FIVE times that I have booked a meal here I have requested a specific area or table. I have always been told this will not be a problem, but each time I arrive with my guests we are ALWAYS, without exception put in a quiet corner as far away from my choice as is possible.
Today (the last straw) my table in the conservatory wasn't available because it had been given to a large party of 20 (after my booking had been made). I was told that a nice table in a bay window had been put aside for me...oh ha ha - no such table; curiously, no party of 20 either?!

The food was great as was the service. A bonus is that the restaurant also has lovely views. We were staying at Malvern View B&B nearby - just 5 mis walk away - very convenient.

ate at the Rising Sun and sat in the restaurant area overlooking the wonderful view. Three courses for £10 and really enjoyable too. Worth a visit mid week.

My wife and I visited the Rising Sun for a spontaneous lunch last week.

First of all you can hardly fault the location. The pub is perched high on Cleeve Hill with excellent views over Cheltenham, Bishop's Cleeve and beyond. This is the sort of pub most people would drive to, and the car parking is ample.

Inside the pub is one of those fake 'olde world'-type places. It is styled as an 'Old English Inn' and they have very much tried to emphasise the pub's historic side.

The menu is a generic 'pub grub'-style one with few surprises. Food quality was distinctly average: I daresay a microwave is heavily employed here. Nonetheless it was reasonably priced, so I suppose it is churlish to complain too much. Drinks range was satisfactory, but alcohol is quite pricey here.

Overall the Rising Sun is worth a visit if you're intending to climb Cleeve Hill. I wouldn't recommend you drive out there especially for the pub.

Booked an overnight on a Sunday for early business meeting on the Monday in Cheltenham.
STAFF
Right from the booking in process, bar staff, waiting and breakfast staff were excellent, smart uniforms, attentive without being obtrusive - well done
ROOMS
Stayed in Room 2 - all rooms are situated at the front of the hotel and have spectacular views of the Cheltenham Plain and on a clear day a good 30 miles. Unfortunately we chose a rainy winters day to travel and had snow overnight, 3 inches on the hill, nothing 3 miles down the road in the town centre !!
Room well appointed with hairdryer, iron and board, wide screen TV etc. Windows sash style and not double glazed, so there is some road noise, although you are set back off the road, with the beer garden in front.
Wardrobe old style, couldn't open the door fully as it caught the bedside table but you can still access the hangers.
Bathroom, functional, clean but not spotless, tiles could do with a clean up and the loo could do with a new toilet seat - this one certainly has seen its time over and is extremely low, so as a bigger bloke having the sink and the toilet roll holder under each arm pit was interesting.....
Bath/Shower - beware the water is very very hot, from tap and shower, set the shower before you get in - one notch to the right is sufficient otherwise trying to adjust it whilst in the shower results in a burnt head
FOOD
The menu was really interesting for a "chain pub", started with Mushrooms in Stilton with a Peppercorn sauce- served in a ramakin, arrived with fresh garlic ciabatta and salad - really good, could have done with a slightly larger portion for the £4.50 price tag. We both settled on pies, partner the open chicken pie with mushroom sauce and I had the beef and ale (home made), chips good but despite crisp veg the lack of seasoning during cooking rendered them tasteless which was a shame as the pies were really good and just what you needed on a cold winters day.
Had a band on during the evening from 2100-2300 which was OK and well supported by the locals, although there was some noise in the rooms, not too unobtrusive
BAR
Good selection of ales - cask, Aspall's cider and wine list - possibly missed not having a real ale or two which would really would have been the icing on the cake

SUMMARY
Would certainly recommend the Rising Sun and will stay there again, price room inc choice of cooked al la carte breakfast £55 via one of the last minute booking sites, which was good value for money
