“Great stay and amazing birding”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

Great spot for birding and great accommodations for a smaller, more personal experience. We stayed in a 2-room cabana. Lots of space with beautiful views of the lagoon and a lovely deck for relaxing. The concept is open air (walls that don't meet the ceiling) so keep in mind if sharing with a friend. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs as you are in nature and the geckos will be scurrying at night in the ceiling (cute little chirpers). Hosts were fantastic in answering questions, providing very good, abundant meals (meals are huge with 3 courses in evening and 2 courses for breakfast) and making you feel welcome. They arranged pick-up at the airport, as well as lagoon birding and a trip to Lamanai while we were there. With the latter, they ensured that we had the best trip time of day and week, such that no one else was at the site while we were there. I really appreciated that as we saw the hoards descending on Lamanai just as we were departing. Trips were arranged evening before and it was very quick and easy. We had 3 different guides and they were all great, with eyes out the back of their heads. With meal arrangements, our hosts were very flexible in allowing changes to our itinerary. The entire place was very relaxed and we enjoyed the down-to-earth humour and warmth of our hosts. Beautiful 2 kids and the 7 dogs (& puppies!) really made for some extra fun. Family-style meals allowed us to get to know the other guests, all of whom were interested in nature and culture, so made for interesting, easy conversation even for the shy. The beer fridge with self-reporting and plenty of spots to relax on the property ensured a nice break between morning and evening birding. One minor point, we did miss house-keeping during our stay, but this may have a been a hiccup. It wasn't a big deal during our 4-night stay but might be worth asking if you need it on a daily basis. The grounds were all beautiful, and the hosts worked from dawn to dusk and beyond.

Crooked Tree Lodge was our first stop in Belize because it is only a 45 minutes drive from the airport and this was one of the places we had not visited yet.. The property is located right on the lagoon with a few cabanas and the main lodge surrounded by lots of green spaces and very close to the village of Crooked Tree . The cabana we stayed in faced the lagoon, was very spacious and tasteful, but be warned, there is no door separating the bathroom from the bedroom, which was a little surprising to us.
We had dinner every night in the main lodge at the community table with the other guests which allowed us to exchange travel stories while sharing a meal prepared by Angie, lasagna and fish one night, and a fun Valentine's Day dinner the next, served by Angie all dressed up in pink and white ( dessert was a pink cupcake with a red rose), all of it very festive and casual.
We took the early morning boat ride with Robert, were treated to a beautiful orange sunrise and saw lots of unusual birds as well as a crocodile.
Overall, this was an excellent stay on all levels and should not be missed.

Yup, the other reviews are true. I could echo them all..You will enjoy your stay, the food is lovely, the views wonderful, the sunrise stunning and the birds .... the birds...
Anyone who visits Belize without going to Crooked Tree is really missing out!!
We were there for two full days, a trip to Lamani (do first), a trip on the lake with their BRILLIANT spotter-guide-steersman, and a walk around the area (or more birding, or local wildlife) is an absolute Belizian MUST!!

There were no mosquitoes whilst we were there, luckily because some cabanas have broken mosquito netting, be sure to demand 100% netting when you book, just in case.

NB Like all lodges (even Andersons) no Aircon - didn't need it in Feb.

We were very excited about this place because of all the great reviews. Booking process before arriving was quick, easy, and informative. We arrange pick up by Neil from the airport. He's a great conversationalist and story teller for the 45 minute ride - $70 each way. There is a bus stop close to the lodge.

The cabanas are clean and cozy with big windows for light and breeze. Amazing views of the beautiful lagoon - a sanctuary, it is! The hosts, Mick and Angie, were so nice and accommodating. Amazing home cooked meals, which you eat family style in the lodge dining room that is covered with eclectic artwork from Mick's travels around the world.

Lot's of ground space to explore. Be sure to catch sunrises and sunsets on the dock. We even walked around the village and two of their dogs followed us. We also suggest the sanctuary boat tour. We were non-birders and still enjoyed it! Our guide, Robert, was knowledgeable. They converted us - we're now more interested in birds on our travels. Mick and Angie can also help setup other tours - we did Lamanai, as well (worth the travel).

This place is truly a little piece of heaven!

My friend and I stayed here for two nights and loved it! Great views, fantastic food, and nice people. Easy to walk to from the bus stop. If you go for a walk through the village or on some of the trails you might have the company of their two loyal dogs :)

Crooked Tree Lodge is less than a mile from the village, and right on the lagoon edge. Even during the off-season, there are plenty of birds to provide a pre-sunrise wake-up call. There is plenty of space between the cabanas so as not to feel crowded, and getting together for dinner and drinks with the other guests was both relaxing and enjoyable. The meals... wow! Real comfort food with a Belizean twist in a beautiful, family-style dining area. Mick, Angie and staff did a great job.

I cannot say enough about Mick and Angie's slice of paradise. The room are quaint and nice. My girlfriend and I are not birders but had an amazing time on the birding trip with Robert the super-knowledgeable guide. He showed us so many types of birds, it was truly amazing. Sunrise is amazing and the view from the pier is spectacular... The meals were incredible and Angie takes care of you as if you're one of the family. take the kayaks out for a nice trip over to the visitor center and the take a little hike on the trails. Mick can also arrange tours such as Lamanai and the such. I would recommend Crooked tree to anybody thats a birder or not...
